So, just as a contrast to the more positive 'This means Terry is ready to come to work!' take, this also represents the front office saying 'enough of this, report to work or suffer the consequences' hardball.

That seems the more accurate take to me?

Feels that way unless there is behind the scenes major progress on the contract but doesn't sound like there is.

He'll forfeit those $861,000/week paychecks if he decides to hold out. Not a bad salary for an undervalued, unappreciated wideout that no other team is willing to pay tier 1 dough.

When Sports Center came to Commanders' training camp, Terry ended his hold out and began his hold in. National story.
Terry's trade demand was immediately before another national media event so the "demand" was cynically timed for maximum coverage.
Terry's off PUP today... the team is about to play on Monday Night Football... who wants to bet the contract will be signed just prior to game time?

Terry's agent may be bad contractually, but he's got the public relations timing thing down.

For all intents and purposes, this is over and he has no choice but to take whatever offer the team has on the table. I guess he can say “pretty please” a few more times, but PUP was the only fig leaf of leverage he had.

I bet a new deal comes out a couple days after he starts practing.

I'm definitely not buying the 30M a year for a 31 year old WR. I'd even be surprised if they get to 28. Maybe they will but I doubt that it's guaranteed.

28-30M would be middle ground from where we believe the two sides stood, so either could be the agreement

This. It’s apparently important to save face. Maybe give him a fourth year non-guaranteed at $40m to bring up the average. Or add a bunch of incentives. Or both.

Small step? Seems like a huge step to me. Bro is running out of time, realizes he doesn’t have leverage, and will need to start practicing. Plus coming off of PUP ends the remote possibility of him collecting game checks while refusing to play (which was never going to happen, but still).

Yeah I mean, that tweet really downplays that coming off of PUP actually means “ending his hold-in”. Which means he’s going to play for us without a new deal (or sign soon), and the drama is near its end for this season.

lol, at a minimum it defeats Lynell Winningham's argument, who guest hosts a lot on the radio, that the local media and fans are sleeping on the idea that Terry will just ride pup into the season and be able to miss games without losing pay checks. The argument struck me wild.

I have had the concern that was Terry's nuclear option. I thought it would be categorically the worst possible idea for Terry, so therefore I didn't think it was going to happen.

But I also thought he might not be getting great advice, and if that's the case, and he could collect a paycheck while faking injury for the year, somebody might convince him that was a good thing to try to do. The negative would be he would be 31 and trying to find a new deal, he would not get the franchise tag, and nobody would pay him like a top 10 receiver. So it would be REALLY stupid.

But Terry's position hasn't seemed like has been terribly rational from the beginning, so I never entirely discounted the theory.

And I have no idea who Lynell Winningham is. So I came up with that as the a stupid option on my own.

If there’s a contract it’ll have lots of funny money in the structure to make his agent look good. It’ll probably be a few days before we can even ascertain the real money he’s getting, if it comes

Totally. I think there was always a point when the team was going to tire of the fake injury excuse and allowing Terry to skate on it.

And now Quinn can stop farting around about Terry having to "not miss any steps in his recovery."

They can call a spade a spade. And if Terry doesn't play in regular season games, it will cost him ~$870k per week.

That said, it's possible they tack on some high salary years with no guarantees on the back end to make the AAV look high.

Which unfortunately will mean there will be about a week of people losing their minds about us overpaying, or bending the knee, because it 'looks' inflated.

I could see that provided it doesn’t obligate the team beyond three years. When this all started, most of us thought that $28-30 million was his fair market value and wanted him to get it. The way this has unfolded soured me and others, but maybe cooler heads will prevail and reach a compromise everybody can live with. I hope so, for all my annoyance, Terry has been a great player for us, and we’re a better team with him out there.

I would still love to see him continue producing his usual 75 catches for 1000 yards for a few more years here. If he does that, then this will all be forgotten, and he’ll take his place in the Ring of Fame one day.
