The All Things Terry Thread

I was debating between a McLaurin and Sanristil SB Era jersey this year--my choice is now made.
My daughter is 10 and this past season was the first one where she really understood and got to know the players. She was back and forth on "who her favorite player" was. We were in Dallas for TM's catch to seal the game last season. An incredible family memory moment. My daughter decided then and there TM was her favorite player. She requested and got a burgundy TM jersey for her birthday which was a couple weeks later. She is not old enough to really pay attention to business side of football so she is not seeing this side of TM. I thought TM was an excellent pick as her "favorite player" because up until recent events I perceived him as a "core Redskin." Now it hurts my heart a little that he might not be quite how I perceived him and by his own choosing may not be onboard for the excitement to come. I am not gonna ruin my daughters perception and just let her roll with her jersey this season knowing it has a good chance of him being here max 2 more seasons and with a different vibe.

Especially since none of the teams who overpay WRs ever win anything. I mean, the list goes on for decades.

A.J. Brown now being the single exception, yet he wins nothing without them also being gifted Barkley.

How the fuck did none of the other 31 teams sign this guy?
Brown also took a market negative contract early, as did Smith, because they wanted to be on the Eagles for their career. Brown was offered more by two other winning teams.

There's a lot of examples now of players acknowledging they make a ton and it's not worth maxing out dollars to Play for a loser, like Terry did on his last contract.

I don’t think this situation was ever a typical contract negation of I go high, you go low, we banter a bit and end up meeting somewhere in the middle with reasonable concessions. Deal is closed, now let’s rock.

Terry’s camp asked for an insane number right off jump and have doubled-down. Nobody who ever goes in asking for the world ever truly expects to receive it.

Hate to say it but we’re actually a few miles deep into “Terry is a dipshit” territory. If fans can understand the situation, so can he.
He's not blameless--but I feel like a lot of this shit is coming from Baker.

Terry seems to be going the opposite route. Whomever his side is talking to believe Terry would play for any team that pays him the most -- whatever team that is. And it feels like he's trying to leverage the team into overpaying him because they are in a SB window.

Terry and his agent were able to get an overpay via Ron-Dan. I am gathering they are shocked its not unfolding the same way. I love that Peters isn't a pushover.

We’re grown men. We pay people to help us with things that aren’t in our skillsets all the time, it makes the world go round. But we are still in the end responsible for the end result in our own lives. If I’m getting played by a mechanic and everyone around me can tell but I’m oblivious, the mechanic is an asshole but I’m the dumbass.

Again, if fans can zoom out and see the situation for what it is, so can Terry. And if he can’t or his agent is that far in his brain, that’s a reflection again on Terry. Who we surround ourselves with and take advice from speaks to our character and decision-making abilities. The buck stops with him, not the agent. He’s either driving the car on this or he’s shutting out all outside information that could contradict what he/his agent wants. Those are both bad qualities.

The reality is that Terry is not going to get anywhere close to what he wants from anyone. Not the Commanders...not another team when/if he gets the opportunity. The sooner he realizes and accepts this the better off he will be.

If he is hell bent to make his point no matter the cost, he is cutting off his nose to spite his face. I know it was mentioned in this thread before as well, Terry has (had?) the chance to be a legend in the DMV for years to come. Even after his playing days are over. Look at Santana Moss, Brian Mitchell, London Fletcher, Fred Smoot, all the others who are still a part of our culture here. People who are still involved in Washington football literally decades after their playing careers ended. Terry could secure a true future for he and his family down the road in the DMV if he could see the forest through the trees, but not if he continues down this road of destroying his reputation and all the goodwill he spent years building.

I still think the agent is 60% to blame and Terry is 40%. The agent is like the captain of the ship and Terry is the owner or that ship. Proper owners let their captains captain. Sure Terry could come in and override the agent and that might happen, but if I'm Terry, I will let my captain do his job until it is certain he can't get the job done. Obviously, Terry still thinks Baker can get the job done otherwise he would have replaced him already.

What other players will want to sign with this agent after this cluster f? Baker not only shot Terry in the foot with this negotiating but he's shot himself in the foot too. How stupid can Baker be for not seeing the big picture?

Love Terry the player and the person but have to think that some of that is going to start to get tarnished as this hold-out/hold-in continues. As many have said Terry and his agent continue it appears to live in a fantasy land where a 30 year old top 15ish WR can demand and get a top 5 WR contract. I completely understand a player wanting to get paid and making that last big one count but logic and common sense exists... Why on earth would GMAP pay an aging WR that kind of money when he is already under contract and can be tagged next year? The Pay as we go scenario works fine till 2027 and by then, well Terry's value is a different story most likely.

Terry won't get more from another team. His best option is to take the deal Washington is offering - win some games, hopefully a championship... The general public, media and a percentage of the fan base chant "pay the man"... fortunately we have a real GM.

This x1000.

The DMV loves their Redskin's Legends. Glory years or the Dark Times, we love those Redskins that were leaders on the field. They are embraced and become part of the fabric of the community with a financial security that goes along with that.

I made this point earlier, and it is pretty huge IMO. Players end their career at a relatively young age... there are literally decades more "work" to be done. Having an open door with the team you worked for as a "legend" is decades of quality, enjoyable work that most players aren't given.

He's been in the position where this would be easily available to him... provided he doesn't throw a temper tantrum and sour his relationship with the team and fan base.

I think the overwhelming number of fans don't understand this. JP said if Terry came out to watch practice in any open practice, a "pay Terry" chant would have broken out.

I think message boards and maybe the twitterverse might be somewhat different. I don't listen to talk radio anymore, so I don't know what people are saying there. But on the podcasts I listen to, it's mostly the more balanced argument.

FYI, if Terry comes in either which way and has 700 yards and 8 TDs by Halloween, all of this "tarnish" conversation is going to be forgotten. He'll be everybody's hero again and a great guy, and the rest of this is going to fade into the sands of time.

On the contrary, if he doesn’t produce at least as much as last season in either 25 or 26, he’ll be catching all the live fire and several strays as well.

That’s where it feels like this is going to me. When you put yourself on a pedestal, it’s only a matter of time before you get knocked off.

The average fan doesn't pay any attention to the salary cap, they think its a fugazi and there are endless dollars to just pay anybody what they want because its not their money.
Message boards dive way deeper into the weeds than the average fan and its why our opinion is quite different.

The irony here is if the team overpays Terry by a sizable amount and then receives a totally off the chart ask from Laremy Tunsil next year then the same fans will criticize the team for not anticipating the Tunsil contract and paying Terry too much :devilish:

I remember I was angry when Washington cut #2 pick Brian Davis back in the 80s and thought Joe and Bobby made a big mistake.

Washington ended up winning the Super Bowl without him.

The lesson is to trust a good GM if you have one.

Peters and the guy in Philly Roseman know what they are doing.

If Terry plays out the last year of his contract in 2025 Peters will find a capable WR to roll with in 2026 through draft, free agency or trade.

8k for Terry? GM AP ain't no dumski. Fuggetaboutit!!! 🤣

28M average, 3 years, 60M guaranteed tops. Take it or play out the contract and we franchise you. Enough Terry tax in that offer. You gonna walk out on me?

Sick Don the Jeweler on the fugazi agent and take his Porsche

We have what might be and what we hope to be a generational quarterback who can keep us competitive and give us a legitimate opportunity to win 3 or 4 Super Bowls over the course of the next 12 to 13 years. If Jayden becomes our Brady, Terry very likely won’t be part of the core that wins the bulk of the championships with #5 behind center, unless we pull off something completely magical and bring home multiple Lombardi’s in the next two years. While Terry may have been #1 in everyone’s hearts during Snyder’s final years, he is merely a piece now, not the foundation upon which the long term success of this franchise will be built on. This is 5’s team, not his anymore. He needs to come to grips with that.

Terry was handsomely paid for his statistics accumulation over the past several years.

He was the best player on a 4-13 team Peters inherited.

But does that make him one of the best overall?

Looking at the NFC East alone I would have to say no.

Ignoring Nabors who was a rookie - I would take Lamb, Brown or Smith over Terry.

I am sure if I look west to the Justin Jeffersons and others I could come up with 5 or 6 I would take in the Conference.

And even though it is perhaps cold hard business that’s the way Peters looks at the situation.

The last thing you want to do is overpay what by age may be a declining rather than ascending player.
