The All Things Terry Thread

Thanks for this. Can you please clarify about E whether he’s talking about our FO or other FO’s?

Other FOs. As for whether this FO values Metcalf over Terry I doubt they'd ever leak that. But its easier for other FOs to talk about it to reporters.

If I recall it was Kimberly Martin who first mentioned she talked to people who work in FOs around the league and they overwhelmingly preferred Metcalf over Terry. Keim doubled down that he's heard the same.

As for this FO, I would guess that in their minds it doesn't matter whose better. It's about the drop off in play in the 30s -- for that reason players don't get the same money at that age.

Terry's response in one of his talking points was "he will age beautifully". And he's feisty about this team should treat him like he will be a unicorn on this.

OK, cool that he feels that way. But its not one of these if you put your mind to it -- it just happens for you kind of drills. Top players, players better than Terry have mostly dropped off as they entered their 30s.

Listened to Keim on Sheehan. The gist.

Terry's side stresses a Terry tax to be compensated for what he endured.

I must say….this part here really chaps my ass. I really hope that’s not true and is an exaggeration.

What he endured? Are you kidding me? To be paid a Kings’s Ransom to play a child’s game? I think most of us here have probably “endured” a hell of a lot more and will never be a millionaire.

I will never understand that kind of thinking.

It’s like he’s saying because I did the job I was paid to do and didn’t cause additional issues, wasn’t a jerk, I should be paid more.

I’m sorry, you don’t get to claim credit for doing the right thing. Especially when you are now working in a culture that appears to be embracing all the things that are the opposite of what you had to “endure.” Only to try to get a couple more million out of an ownership group and coaching staff that had exactly ZERO to do with what you had to “endure”

Maybe the HOG should have had a “Terry Tax” thrown into the deal for the team. They should have known he was going to need more money for all he had to “endure” here. 🙄

I still can't wrap my mind around the size of the gulf between running back contracts and wide recievers.

I just cant understand how after a holdout james cook gets 12 per and we're struggling to get an almost 30 year old less than elite reciever to take between 28 and 30.

It feels nuts to me.

Especially since none of the teams who overpay WRs ever win anything. I mean, the list goes on for decades.

A.J. Brown now being the single exception, yet he wins nothing without them also being gifted Barkley.

How the fuck did none of the other 31 teams sign this guy?

I was literally just reading the article about Cook and thinking the exact same thing!

Agree. i also think it diminishes all the good guy stuff when you put a price tag for acting like that.

For all the leaks from his camp, the Terry tax idea, is the most cringeworthy point from them.

Like I said in another post, if i helped an old lady cross the street -- good deed. If I put out my hand for a tip for doing that -- all of a sudden its not a good deed, its just transactional.

Do I think Terry with his teammates and fans is genuinely a good guy? Yes. But this whole idea if he should be financially rewarded for it -- makes him look greedy.

Can't disagree even though I was one who suggested I don't mind him getting a "pain and suffering" bonus.

There's just a difference between finding a wallet on the ground and returing it to its owner and getting a reward and finding a wallet on the ground and demanding a reward for its return.

I think the thing that bugs me about that is also that he ALREADY was paid for his pain and suffering. His last contract was better than warranted at the time.

I get that though. If you've ever met a truly lucky person they are often the whiniest of complainers. So many things fall for them that when the littlest thing goes wrong it's the end of the world and everyone is always picking on them.

In Terry's mind that old contract was simply his due.

Commanders were reportedly stunned by Terry McLaurin's initial contract demands

The problem centers on McLaurin wanting top dollar. The Commanders are reluctant, considering his contract extension won't kick in until he's 31 years old. Charles Robinson from Yahoo Sports went one step further, claiming that Adam Peters was stunned enough by the wideout's initial demands to almost cut off negotiations instantly.

"The way I understand it, when negotiations first opened, I think the Commanders were a little stunned by initially what Terry McLaurin and his camp were really gunning for. Everyone's being careful about not saying what the initial number was, but I will say it was ... high enough that it almost completely broke down conversation instantaneously between the two parties. I think the Commanders were stunned at, initially, what the ask was. And to me, the inference is, this was like, nearly top tier, Tier 1 money."

As I digest Terry's contract "demands" and the narratives around it. I am liking the idea of making him play out his contract. He apparently thinks he's the top WR in the league or close enough to it -- let him hit FA and find out how the league feels about that. If he's that "hurt" that the team doesn't feel he's the best WR like he feels about himself, wait to how he feels when the whole league chimes in on it.

The ONLY reason that contract wasn't viewed as terrible was the disproportionate explosion of WR contracts during the life of the deal. But I agree, most were feeling like it was a pretty substantial overpay for a player that is good not great. It's unfortunate, because that last overpay has probably contributed to the current impasse.

Not shocked by the above.

The longer this has gone on, the more I’ve been suspecting the ask was outrageous. That said, everyone comes to the table with a huge number, knowing they will see less.

Although, Terry is not and never has been in a position of leverage. The only smidge of leverage he has is his value to our team in 2025, for which he is under contract. Add the FT for 2026 being significantly less than the long term ask.

Not absolving Terry in any way, because he could end this if he wanted to. But nobody is going to be lining up to sign with his agent after this. Misplayed is an understatement. Not sure why he would have ever even led Terry to believe he was in line for the next huge payday. Perhaps he was high off the success and all the goodwill with the new FO and thought things were sweet. Whatever the case, this needs to be nipped in the bud soon.

This idea of the Terry Tax is idiotic and childish. Not sure whose idea it was, but it sounds like Baker's. It's really souring Terry's reputation here, to me.

Like I said earlier in the thread, sometimes people show you who they really are. I sincerely hope they get a deal done, because we are a better team with a happy Terry on the field….but I don’t know if I will look at him the same way after this. My McLaurin jersey may not make it out of the house this year.

People absolutely should be fairly compensated for their work. However, I can never get behind greed and that’s all I think it is at this point. Right now when they need him most, to be a part of something that could really go next level….he’s letting all of us down.

This is the downside of Terry having that athletic arrogance that we want all our players to have. We do want him thinking he's the best and backing down from no one. This is what a good agent is supposed to counterbalance. They need to pump up their client, but then be objective and realistic in the negotiating room.

There's an old cliche that there's nothing wrong with shooting for the stars, but in negotiation there actually is. If I walk into a small press demanding Stephen King money for my first novel... Well, I very well may lose the book deal right there.
