The All Things Terry Thread

It gets done or it doesn’t and life goes on. Until then I’m no longer interested in the song and dance or the theatrics engaged in by reporters. (I know you were all impatiently waiting for that. 🤣)

OK so Russini, thinks this ends up where Keim thinks this team is willing to make a deal in the high 20s. hopefully it happens sooner than later.

At some point the FO and coaching staff will also sour on TM, its obviously hurting the teams preparation. I think its already a no brainer that a WR becomes priority #1 heading into next season, these protracted negotiations are not helping Terry one bit. Even without the TM drama I think WR was always going to be a big priority next year due to TMs age anyway.

Yeah no matter how this is resolved, take a WR high in the next draft.

Long way to go of course but next year isn’t looking like a very good year for WRs. These negotiations have really hammered home the point that receiver is going to be a huge need 1-2 seasons from now at most. We need to find his successor for this offense to hit its true stride long term IMO.

It’s hard to see the answer coming in free agency and with 2026 being a weak crop in the draft, it really ups the pressure. Maybe someone hits their board just right next year but either way I bet Peters has either the 26 or 27 1st rounder mentally reserved for WR. Sure we could scrape by with Jayden elevating everything but I’m sure he wants to make life easier for him.

Good news is if the building blocks of the last two drafts go according to plan, we should be able to afford spending that capital. The oline and defensive backfield suddenly look like strengths. We probably spend next years first on Edge or Dline (unless we fall for a specific WR). That frees us up to be aggressive in a better draft at the position in 27.

Plans subject to change obviously but I met the loose framework in Peters mind is something like that.

At some point TM will have to come off PUP, maybe next week to get some conditioning minutes for that second PS game. That's at least something the FO can do to flex on their position.

Meanwhile we'll continue to see stuff like this - LOL

Peters has been pretty active I. The trade market also. That could be our solution.

I don’t know if WR is a priority over edge in the draft, but edges do often come available in FA.

The reality is that we were going to need a WR regardless of Terry’s shenanigans. He’s going to be 31 next year.

Honestly, the most logical thing for the team would be to let Terry play out his contract and then franchise him. Not doing that is giving Terry his, “Terry has been a good soldier” bonus that it seems he’s looking for.

Hopefully we get some development out of Lane this year. Not upbeat about Luke. Noah is a walking injury. We will need a replacement for him as well. Deebo also older.

The fact Rossini keeps talking about AAV, and she's CLEARLY talking to Terry's agent, it seems like they are stuck on AAV.

I'm also done with the drama, but I can't stop talking about it because it's kindof the only thing to talk about.

There is only one example I can think of (and there might be more, but just one comes to mind) of a player holding out, missing a couple or regular season games, and then coming in to sign a contract and all remaining well in the world after that, and that was Emmit Smith in 1993. Smith held out the first 2 games, the Cowboys went 0-2. But Smith was not collecting game checks, and he actually abandoned his demand for QB money and signed with the team, and then the damn Cowboys rattled off 7 in a row, finished the season 12-4 and won the superbowl. Stinking Cowboys.

If Terry really thinks he is going to take this into the regular season, that's a really bad strategic decision on his part. Assuming they can figure out how to get him off of PUP, they won't pay him to sit out. So he'll lose real money in that instance, the neighborhood of $800k per game. That adds up quickly.

So I see a resolution in some way before the season. The question I have is, if we know the ending, then why not get to it now? I mean, you don't need a DeLorean Time Machine to know the situation on September 7th. Project what's going to happen and figure it out.

skinsinparadise I agree that there is literally zero chance of a trade in any scenario. It does nothing for Peters. The only scenario I can think of would be a swap of top 10 receivers in some way. I had heard at one point Tyreek Hill was disgruntled in Miami, so a swap there might make sense, but I don't think that is likely. I'm not sure this group wants to deal with Hill any more than Terry. Otherwise, nothing they do helps this year, and they have aspirations of a deep run this year, so they want to help that cause.

Odd that I mentioned this in my previous post. If I were Peters, I would entertain that trade. I don't know if I would do it, but I would entertain it.

And if I was Terry, I absolutely would hate that. He'd be going to a team with a meh, oft injured QB that for all the world looks like it's about to go into a complete reset if they don't make the playoffs this year. Terry's situation here is better than Hill's situation in Miami.

I hope Terry realizes that.

Unless Miami is willing to pay him what he wants or close to it. That seems to be TM’s primary focus.

Yep, primary- definitely not being on the field, being there for the team, etc. Actions…

My main problem here is simple: I see Terry’s ask as unjustifiably high. I get the want Metcalf comp and it is in my opinion a decent comp for TM, but one dude doesn’t define anything and there are a lot of other factors. The team offer seems like it should be good enough but I do understand it is his last real contract. 50% more or thereabouts? For his life?

To your point though; that is thus, his priority. Clearly.

This has been a rumor for weeks from the context that it could make sense in theory. But have heard no reputable reporter actually see there is a real discussion on a trade like that. We talkes about it among each other on this thread awhile back as to whether we'd do that if it arose.

*sigh* Hate to say it but I think it’s clear at this point he’s not going to be happy with anything reasonable that the team would be willing to offer. So it’s getting to the point where AP should just say why bother. Time to let him play it out on the contract he agreed to. If he can’t refrain from pouting and play like a professional this year for $25.5 million, then do we really want him going forward after this year anyway? My guess though is he will not pout, but instead come out with a chip on his shoulder to prove he is worth the money he’s been asking for. So ironically, we may get a better season out of him by not giving him a raise. Especially considering that even with the raise, he will still feel undervalued and disrespected. I don’t think they would publicly say that they are calling off negotiations, but that may be where the team is at at this point.

Some of these national media types need to zoom out and think. McLaurin has been a 70/1000/6 type feel good guy his whole career until he had Daniels throwing lasers. Why in the world would we give him a contract that no one else in the NFL would.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if any team would be willing to give a 30 year old WR even $30m/year, let alone ~$34m/year. At between $25m-$28m he'd be the highest paid 30+ WR in the NFL outside of Hill, who's making ~$30m. But Hill also signed that contract right after a monster 1st team All-Pro 2023 year where he was also ranked the #1 player in the entire NFL by his peers.

Terry simply isn't on that level. Giving him ~$34m/year would be loony tunes.

I love Terry, but if he wants close to 30M, give me Hill the malcontent and we'll let the chips fall where they may. Hills speed would open up the field for Deebo and Ertz underneath in a way that no other player in the NFL does.

Also, if Terry is gonna be such a finicky player to sign, why do we think he'll be willing to ask for a more reasonable deal 1-2 years from now. The current contract impasse seems to indicate his relationship with the team is gonna end soonish.

If that's the case (he won't accept smaller, lesser deals as he ages)... give me the head case Hill for 2 years and we prioritize WR next offseason.

The team has solid leadership, they'll miss Terry, but won't crumble without him.

Unless Miami is willing to pay him what he wants or close to it. That seems to be TM’s primary focus.
If they do a trade, it would have to come with a new contract as well.

We would just assume the remainder of Hill's contract, but something would have to happen contractually because I think he is very hard to cut or trade at the moment.

Miami would also have to sign Terry to a new contract.

I don't think this is going to happen. I THINK only the signing bonus accelerates to current year, but that still means he would count $12m against the cap this year for the Dolphins, who would also have to give Terry a new contract.

Eh, it could happen. But I find it unlikely.

I wonder if there was anyway NOT to get to this point.

It's frustrating. Terry has been a great 'skin and his joy on the field was all of our joy. It was the cathartic expression of relief after so many years of misery on and off the field. Still, Terry is 30 and he has been a B+ player and not an A+ player so if time steals anything from him, he will drop into that good receiver category (which you still want and need) but not that number one receiver category that makes defensive coordinators pull out their hair and decide the coverage needs to always tilt his way. Sadly, at his best, I'm not sure he was ever the guy who needed to be bracketed and double teamed every down or he'd make a team pay.

Don't get me wrong, he's been good. Very good. Better than the QBing around him and maybe with a Kirk Cousins or better QB during the Snyder years he would have been the receiver I described above, but the reality is he hasn't been. He has been taken out of a lot of games. So, as I said, he's a B+ receiver.

B+ receivers don't grown on trees. We want them. We want to keep them. We also can't treat them like A+ receivers becuse that's what bad teams do and it leaves them i purgatory or worse. That's what the Wizards did when they gave Juwan Howard or Bradley Beal max contracts when they were only very good players. So, I want to keep Terry. I want Terry to want to be here, but I also understand that the team needs to be smart about it.
