The 2025 Draft Thread

Beyond his football opinions, which I often found to be mostly questionable, I personally had a hard time watching his food content considering his medical history. That goes double for when he included his grandson who looks at a young age to be following him down that same path. I can see not giving a shit about yourself but the children, my god, think of the children.

I had a beef with him because he was known for basically stealing other people's stories and passing them off as his own, particularly when he was with the Post, I think. I know there were several reporters who would grouse that the Post never gave credit to the reporter who broke a story, and he was a very significant offender in that regard.

The "Give me 2 minutes" stuff was just ludicrous. He would post some generic thing on twitter and then say "give me 2 minutes" which essentially was a recap of whatever Keim (and it was mostly Keim) posted/wrote about/reported. It was almost desperate.

Anyway, I have never found him all that interesting to begin with, and then he kidnof made himself into a caricature of himself.

I donā€™t watch any film myself and know pretty much nothing, but what pushed me to Jayden eventually was Cooley doing a film breakdown where he told Sheehan after watching Jaydenā€˜s film, there really wasnā€™t any point in looking at the other QBs ā€œheā€™s our guyā€. He said after first watching a bunch of plays he had to pause for a second and make sure he didnā€™t put on a highlight reel instead by accident!

Thanks. Yeah it was lol so over the top where Jayden was a Greek God and Maye was the next Daniel Jones or name that failure at QB and it was nonstop that I among others couldn't take it.

The irony is I was pushing Daniels months before that poster (if I recall they were called NFLchick) started selling Daniels nonstop. It actually took me longer to be sold on Maye. But I had to do something to help avoid that thread from becoming a joke -- lovefest for one player, hatred for another.

But once NFLchick was gone, i made post after post selling Daniels. And yeah me too as to digging Cooley. I respect Cooley's takes and he was infatuated with Jayden. Cooley is the same guy who liked Josh Allen as the top QB in the draft that year -- few were with him on that at the top.

After year 1, I think we clearly got the best QB from that draft. I do think Maye is going to be really good, too. He was playing with nothing last year -- arguably NE had the worst roster in the NFL. Caleb TBD -- but he's definitiely set up for the kill -- good weapons, on paper good O line, and an inventive play caller. Penix, McCarthy, Nix might end up good too. Wouldn't surprise me if that draft goes down as one of the better historic ones for QB. I still think we got the best one.

I think the low point for Snider where he was exposed was during the early Spring of that year where Dan ultimately sold -- some fan on twitter who claimed to have inside info that it was going down that weekend. And that fan got some traction on twitter for that point. And then Snider kicked in saying he was hearing the same thing, that the sale was a day or two away. It never happened during that period of course. Then I noticed Snider was often just repeating Keim's stuff as his own insider info.

Yeah they were way over the top. But I think it was NFLchick who kept crapping on Drake Maye - basically anything negative on Maye would show up on that thread. At different points NFLchick was making the case that Maye was going to be a big time bust and sucked. It was the anti-Maye stuff that really irritated me.

I began to avoid that whole thread as it got out of hand with all the ultra positive and worse, ultra negative posts on the 3 QBs. I stayed up on the facts and latest news on the 3 only. In the end I would have gone Maye over JD. About a week before the draft is when it was pretty apparent Daniels was going to be the choice, I then began accepting that and think goodness!
 
The QB thread is always gonna be the most volatile. After all, itā€™s by far the most important position. Throw in the opportunity to take a franchise player at the top of the draft, and it got downright combustible! Such a pleasant change for once to have the position settled with everyone agreeing weā€™ve got the right guy! Maybe a little boring I guess, but itā€™s what weā€™ve always wanted/needed and was the reason for all the bickering.
 
I find the conversation about whether to give Peters credit for drafting Danielā€™s at 2 amusing. For multiple reasons. As many here have pointed out, most of the ES board, including me, and PFF preferred Maye. Peters, as it turns out, not only had Daniels above Maye, but he had him above Caleb. That sounds like pretty good scouting.

More importantly however how many people have said that the reason Daniels was better than Caleb last year was coaching and OL play? How many times have we heard that If we had drafted Patrick Mahommes, that he wouldnā€™t have been the same player in Washington, because the rest of the team was so dysfunctional.

Who hired the coaches that helped make Daniels so successful? Who pieced together that OL? Who signed Zach Ertz and Bobby Wagner to help set the culture? Made moves that turned out to be very good, but that we crapped on at the time, like the Marcus Mariota signing?

Peters not only identified Daniels as QB1 and selected him, but is also the man that assembled the support structure that allowed him to succeed. He deserves a lot of credit for that.

In terms of the other draft picks, Sainristil was obviously very good. Our LT that helped get us to the NFC championship game was drafted in the 3rd, and looks like he will start again next year, on the interior. I fully expect Newton to be very solid and at least justify a 2nd round selection. Thatā€™s 3 likely starters drafted outside the 1st.

I understand the fan response to Luke McCaffrey and Ben Sinnott. They both still have a chance to be contributors, but also, the best GMā€™s donā€™t hit on everyone. Howie Roseman gave Bryce Huff $50 million and traded a 3rd for Jahan Dotson.
 
It's too early to judge Peters on the 2024 class. Sinnott likely isn't what we hoped, but TE's almost always need a year to acclimate. Newton had no off-season/training camp/preseason as he had surgery on both feet, Coleman's position is changing, McGee is stuck behind a HoF linebacker, etc. We need time to assess.

The Rivera draft classes however, we've had enough time with those. Ordinarily we might give another year to the 2023, but that one busted right out of the gate save for one player being solid. I'm not sure anyone else is on a roster besides the RB who might be on our practice squad.

Peters does absolutely get credit for helping change the structure for Jayden Daniels. Coaching staff/etc were his vision
 
The thing about Peters' draft is even if Sinnott and McCaffrey end up busts. Doesn't matter if...

Daniels continues to be an elite QB. But for argument's sake lets say the QB is like any ordinary spot and counts only as a hit but nothing beyond that. If Sainristill and Newton and Coleman end up good and its trending that way, its a VERY good draft. That's before delving into McGree, Jean-Baptiste.

You pull 3 good starters out of any draft, especially if you got an extra role player-backup type too -- you've nailed it. Peters is trending towards at least 4 with multiple role players. If it ends up that way, its a killer good draft.

If a GM is judged by isolating this pick or that pick and missing on it -- they all suck by those standards. They all fail. If I recall the odds of success for even a 2nd rounder is 50-50. 3rd rounder if I recall is 33%. And naturally the deeper you go into that round the lesser your odds -- so for example McCaffrey being a late third rounder versus early third rounder -- that point is relevant.

You are also going to swing and miss on trades, FAs. If Peters nails everything with no big misses, he'd be the first GM to do it in history. As mentioned, if I just isolated some of Roseman's mistakes, he'd look like a moron.
 
Nailing the pick for Coleman was big. Makes up some for striking out on the other two picks where he was trying to bring in some weapons for the new QB. But otoh I think the Johnnie Newton pick is still in question. Thereā€™s going to be a lot of guys picked after him that are great, so if he is a mediocre starter at best, thatā€™s not really going to be a hit for me, more like a wash at best.

That all being said though, the Jayden pick locks it in as a great draft, regardless of the rest. Getting the QB right was far and away the most important thing and he nailed it. Easy to say it was an obvious pick in hindsight, but obviously not based on the number of people who preferred Drake Maye or someone else. And he did a great job keeping his intentions quiet until the very end, which may have been crucial to assure that Chicago didnā€™t realize the mistake they were making by locking in on Caleb.

Absolutely. And considering context, this dude is trending to being the best QB we've landed since Sonny, there is zero chance I am saying yeah whatever Peters who wouldn't have taken Daniels.

This is the same team who took Heath Shuler. And I recall a SI article to this day about Shuler saying he's the next Troy Aikman. Same team that had Brad Johnson and discarded him for Jeff George. Same team that drafted Ramsey in the first. Same team that traded a third rounder for Mark Brunell. Same team that had their legendary coach fall in love with Jason Campbell and trade up for him in the first. Same team that hired a zany unqualified head coach in Jim Zorn to "fix" Campbell.

Same team that traded an historic haul for RG3. Same team that drafted Kirk and couldn't figure out how to keep him or even get any trade compensation for him. Same team that the owner insisted on taking Haskins (RIP) because in his mind he was the best player in the draft. Haskins, the same dude that Orlosky and Riddick more or less said was can't miss. With Riddick going on about how special he was and is way better than RG3.

Same team where their previous coach, Rivera, whined openly about how QB is the reason why this team can't compete in the division. The irony considering Hurts was drafted during his tenure. Ron could have drafted him, too. He wanted to trade three first round picks for Russell Wilson and fortunately was rebuffed. And, in an radio interview he used the excuse of not taking Herbert that there wasn't NFL consensus on Herbert. That's his excuse? Not enough draft geeks were sold on him? Why does he have his own scouting staff, then?

Same dude who defended Wentz with a ton of emotion by saying he did the analytics studies on him himself and gave up two high picks to get him. Snyder making a rare public statement saying "we finally got the QB" after the deal was made. Same team that drafted a QB in the 5th round, and then annoiting him a year later as the starter after just one rookie start and then saddiling him with an awful O line and a offensive coordinator who threw him to the wolves.

This team would be a wild 30-30 TV special on incompetence at the QB spot. So many coaches blew it. So many GMs blew it. And their mistakes were done in every way imaginable. Blew it with good QBs they had in house in multiple ways. Gave the Qbs at times poor supporting casts, poor coaches. Missed opportunities to get franchise Qbs right under their noses. Did poor evaluations of QBs in the draft. On and on and on.

So no way, I am not giving credit to the one GM we've had to get it right and escaped the dungeon which we felt stuck in. Getting the right QB. Setting up the QB in a way to succeed. And it looks like they not only got it right but they hit the jackpot. This isn't blowing it with Kirk or Brad Johnson or missing out on Hurts. That used to be my standard which is can we get and retain and support a good QB.

My standards were can we get someone like Joe Theismann. A good QB, capable of a great season (ala Rypien) but nothing elite or special. That would be a sea change, getting the next Joey T. But it looks like we got way better than that. Looks like we got our Dan Marino. And especially considering where this team has come from on that spot -- any GM who not only doesn't blow it at QB but also lands a QB who is likely better by far than any QB I've seen in my lifetime wearing this team's jersey -- that GM is a hero of mine.

I can now talk about a SB without sounding like Larry Michael style crazy. It's a real possibility. When was the last time this team was talked about as a SB contender? I'd gather it was when Dan first arrived and that was fools gold. We haven't sniffed anything like this in eons.

Will see about Newton. I got some high hopes for him. He looked good in the playoff game against Philly. Coming off of surgery on two feet and having no training camp, I think slowed him down, will see.

Here's my gut on those guys.

Newton -- I think ends up a good player. Not sure about great. 3 technique.

Sainstrill -- I think ends up good, maybe great.

Coleman -- I think ends up a good guard, maybe great

Sinnott -- total wildcard to me. I think at worse a role player because of his strong blocking.

McCaffrey -- another wildcard to me. Good work ethic. Don't know. Don't lean either way.

Hampton -- wildcard. I heard he looks good physically in camp. Played well in the last preseason.

MaGee -- coaches seem to love him. Can he stay healthy? Has a chance

Jean-Bapitise -- was one of my fav late rounder types before that draft. I think he will be a decent role player type
