The 2025 Draft Thread

I’m getting confused…are PFF grades to be widely accepted or are they argument dependent? 😉 (That is not in the least directed at anyone in particular, especially not at the above post.) They just seem to be either convenient or inconvenient depending on the situation.

It seems to me that neither Sinnott nor McCaffrey were bad picks per se (at least not yet) but they do seem to me to have been premature picks.

With Voice_of_Reason he's been a critic of PFF. So we are having fun with that.

As i like to tell him, some over the years think I like PFF too much and some say not enough. i like to use it as a tool for thought versus ride it as the be all and end all.

Take the draft for example, it will tell you based on their grades that Conerly is a better pass blocker than run blocker. That flows with consensus thought. Most of the time PFF does flow with consensus thought.

But at times, PFF scores can be wacky as to some outlier grades. And the one point I like to make to Voice_of_Reason in those cases is its interesting to listen to those PFF guys grade players in the draft because they don't go strictly by the grades from PFF even though they work there. PFF for example does not factor context. So lets say a 90 grade for a player versus weaker competition doesn't mean the same thing as an 80 graded player against greater competition. Or the lower graded player can simply be obviously much more talented and hence have higher potential.

And these PFF guys are well aware of that. So they will explain the context of why they prefer a lower graded player and aren't slaves to their own scores ironically. The scores are simply their way of grading play -- play by play in every game. And of course its not perfect and its flawed.

But for me it can give me some clues about the player which I can then explore. Often those clues are helpful. Sometimes they aren't.

Bringing that to the Jayden-Maye debate from the last draft. PFF were zealots about Maye >> Jayden. Caleb >> Jayden. Maye scored big for them on some metrics that they values including intermediate throws and if I recall big time throws. They had questions about Jayden because the lack of volume of intermediate throws in between the numbers and also questioned his ability to throw on the move.

I recall saying on ES upon rewatching Jayden before the draft and zoning in on those variables that Jayden was very good as to throwing on the move and making intermediate throws in between the numbers when he actually made those throws. And also part of why he didn't do it a ton was Thomas and Nabers were so good on go routes, corner routes, deep outs, etc that he majored in what his WRs were especially good at. Again that's context, which PFF won't give you.

Also, Jayden had a high sack rate. But also if you watch them, they came off fairly benign as to his sacks. Some of them were on designed runs where he was smoked out and thwarted right away and those were considered sacks. And when he was sacked they weren't really bad ones. Rarely were they 10 yard back type sacks. I recall saying that he was so good at scrambiling hence his big time yardage on the ground. But as to designed runs, LSU did a poor job at timing them because they were often smoked out and in turn some of them registered as sacks.

PFF will showcase the numbers on a pure basis. And look its not like their draft guys don't watch these players and make their own observations. But IMO the PFF guys came off very hipsterish on Maye citing this number and that number. I liked Maye, too. Maye's critics were showcasing some of his wild accuracy issues. But if you went through his games, it was about 3 bad games, really the rest of the season he was very good. The one thing I had questions about Maye following some of the critics on him was how did he play in big spots in big games. And while he wasn't a train wreck on that front, he could be erratic. And then when you watch his interviews, he comes off like a dude with some nervous energy. So i have some concerns about this on this front.

None of this type of stuff you can get purely by reading PFF numbers. But the PFF numbers helped guide me to look for certain things in both players and make judgments accordingly. So useful tool. But IMO I don't take them literally. I think the context must be considered.

I used to have an epic meltdown every time anybody referenced PFF.

In an effort to better myself, I made resolution and a pact with God when I moved over to BGO I would stop ranting on PFF every time somebody brought it up.

In general, I find their process questionable and flawed. I also despise their Dear Leader Chris Collinsworth who bought PFF years ago. Before that, it was a reasonable platform for football statistics and they were trying to do some interesting things with film study, but after the point Collinsworth got involved, it changed course somewhat and started to try and be provocative.

Anyway, I'm not a fan, but I have resolved not to derail every thread when somebody brings up PFF.

skinsinparadise and I had some epic exchanges. Now it's just sort of a running joke. :)

Drake Maye was the primary favorite here too…until it became very obvious that the team preferred Daniels and many wanted to get on the right side of the decision before it was too late. They know who they are. 😉

I was devoutly anti-Maye for many reasons, some spoken, some not. My biggest complaints were that he didn’t stand out against comparatively inferior talent (ACC vs SEC & Big whatever it is now), that he had his poorest performances against the relatively better teams (vs ie- early season cupcakes) especially in the final weeks of his seasons, and that he didn’t make those around him better.

But, boy, did he look good in his uniform.

I wanted Maye at the time--I was worried about Daniels' size. I am very glad to be wrong.

If we're doing QB rankings from last draft, I had...

1A (Maye)/1B (Daniels) > 2 (Caleb)

I still think Caleb should have gotten less hype than he did. Good supporting cast last season with a bad OC, has a great one this season with a great OC turned HC. So maybe he still proves me wrong. Just thought he was the 3rd best QB prospect in that draft.

I also liked Penix. Was fairly neutral on McCarthy and Nix but still thought all 3 of these were 1st rounders. If you dropped them down 5-10 spots in draft position, that would have seemed more reasonable.

Same here

I didn't like Caleb because of perceived immaturity and being too spoiled. Finger nails, mommy, etc.

Agree wholeheartedly with that. Plus he sat out the bowl game and his replacement set team records. 🤣

Yup, Caleb and mommy scared me, as did Daniels thinner frame which is a hangover from both RG3 and Forbes. For those reasons I had Maye slightly over JD and both over Caleb

On ES, the Daniels-Maye stuff was an odd journey for me.

I started during that college season pushing Jayden so I was early on him compared to most. On first watch in the post season, I said Jayden > Maye but I liked both. Then early on it felt like it was going to be Maye so I really dived deep into him and became sold the more I watched. And had a slight preference for Maye. At the same time there was a new person posting on the subject that worshipped Jayden and thought Maye would be a big bust so lol any pro Jayden items or anti-Maye items made it to the QB thead so it started to feel a bit obnoxious. So I tried to balance that out with any pro Maye take I can produce.

Then that person disapperared. And lol that thread swung the other way very pro Maye, somewhat anti-Daniels as to what people wanted at #2. So I sort of became the defacto Daniels person on that thread in the last month or so, defending or trying to reassure about Daniels. I still loved Maye, too. The subject became somewhat polarizing. There were some who loved most. Me among them. But I would say Daniels had some fairly loud critics on ES by the time the draft came.

I've never watched so much of a player in my years of following the draft. I've watched every game of both Maye and Daniels more than twice.

Recalling that and seeing what happened this season, I am fairly confident both are going to be super stars. I think Maye more likely in that Herbert type variety. Daniels I think can rival Mahomes.

As for Maye, take away his three bad games, he was mostly on fire in his last college season. And has good size, velocity, mobility. He can make every throw -- deep outs, digs, everything. Some of his critics would showcase some of his bad throws on layup type throws like screens. But again most of that was in those three bad games. I like the Herbert comparison. He doesn't quite have Herbert's arm. But he has better mobility than him. Similar flavor of a player IMO.

I think the criticism back then of Maye not showing up as well against big competition especially later in the season or in big moments is somewhat fair. I was curious about his 4th quarter performance this season and saw he's ranked 16th in one site on that front. Also watching Maye's interviews, he comes off a nice guy but brimming with nervous energy. And on that front he reminds me some of early Kirk who had some nerves in some of those big moment games. So I do wonder if he's going to be a clutch post season type QB. I got no worries about Jayden on that front.

I remain skeptical of Maye and time will ultimately tell. The French have a term je ne sais quoi that loosely translated refers to an indefinable quality that makes something or someone distinctive or special, often in a way that is hard to describe.

To me, Drake Maye is the antithesis of the term.

I do think that he is serviceable as an upper mid-tier NFL starter that if put in an optimum situation can be a winner, but I don’t think that he is ‘special’. And I also don’t think that he will be the clear and obvious driver in his team’s success.

I never really dived into Caleb because I assumed he'd be gone.

Same as to injury concerns for me as to Maye versus Jayden. I posted so much pro Daniels stuff and some cautionary things about Maye in the month leading to that draft that Witt33 who used to post a lot on that QB thread told me why don't you just go with Jayden over Maye considering the nature of my posting. I did have Jayden at one point higher than Maye. I just invested so much time for a period into Maye and had to defend him so much to that person who kept slamming Maye that I couldn't lol abandom him. But I was very high on both of them.

But the idea of the personalities of these guys are defintely relevant. And we don't always know until it plays out in the pros. Caleb looked sulky on the sidelines when things aren't going his way in Chicago. I've read that the Bears want him to work on his demeanor. I don't know how easy that is to change because personalities are what they are. The reason why I think Jayden is likely the best in this class is because of his personality -- good teammate, unbelievable work ethic, calm under pressure, etc.

He's off to a good start, played well and did so with a garbage supporting cast. And he's only 22.

I think his distinctive attribute is his mobility which is surprising because he doesn't look like a dude who can run when he steps on the field. In 12 games he rushed for over 400 yards, almost 8 YPC.

I think he's going to be a top 10 QB. But guessing he doesn't crack the top 5.

I agree that his youth is an advantage. That was the one positive that I held. The roster and coaching staff was definitely an uphill climb, no question. He only won 1 game in which he was the primary qb. Brissett won 2 and Milton 1. Maye will remain TBD in my mind…until he isn’t. 😉

Oh yes, I remember it well. There were a couple of pro Jayden posters that were just over the top obnoxious. And anytime you would try to balance it out with some pro Maye stuff, they’d try to paint you as some Jayden hater. But for those who love reading your stuff and have a lot of respect for your opinion (count me among those) it was clear you felt we would be in good hands with either quarterback.

I don’t watch any film myself and know pretty much nothing, but what pushed me to Jayden eventually was Cooley doing a film breakdown where he told Sheehan after watching Jayden‘s film, there really wasn’t any point in looking at the other QBs “he’s our guy”. He said after first watching a bunch of plays he had to pause for a second and make sure he didn’t put on a highlight reel instead by accident!

Snider isn't a serious Washington Football coverage guy anymore. He's done some good stuff in the past in terms of Redskins history stuff, but he barely keeps up with current events at this point. He'll sometimes offer up an interesting 'contrarian' take on something, but he's not someone I pay a lot of attention to when it comes to serious analysis. Just my opinion. Nice guy. Pretty much a lightweight these days when it comes to journalism.

He became a running joke on ES because, during the sale, he would literally take everything Keim and AJ Perez would report and put it in his "2 minutes" like he was breaking news. It was sad and pathetic.

I also found him to be rather sensitive to any criticism: back in the 2017 playoffs, Metro would not say open--so Nats Twitter started the #NatsRide hashtag to ride share to the games. Snyder wrote a scathing article criticizing Nats fans for blaming metro and not showing up (before the game). So I responded to his article about Nats Ride that Scott Allen at the Post had just written. I didn't say anything derogatory, just correcting him. He immediately blocked me.

Not to be that guy - but it's Rick Snider - not Snyder.

Maybe that's why he blocked you, lol...
