Random Commanders Thoughts

The players respected him, a players coach /s

IIRC Jon and Bruce tarnished his name.

There are more than a few players who singled him out with INSANE text messages and conversations.

It's not just Swearinger, but his claims were made specifically about Jay and he gave out a pic of his phone with claimed texts from Jay.
Weird stuff:

There was more stuff out there too, about him drinking and doing stuff during the regular season, not doing good prep work. Those things didn't have anything to do with Bruce or Dan.

While Jay Gruden probably wasn't even going to be a SB winning coach, even Joe Gibbs failed to advance past the 2nd round of the playoffs with Snyderatto pulling the strings.

whoa, he owes you money, or something worse.

A. you realize who his owner and GM were right? the fact that he won more than one game is a miracle. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, that worked for Snyder can be fairly judged.
I do. And two things can be true at the same time. He was a horrendous coach. He never maximized the talent on the team, when he was calling plays he stunk at it, his only success is really a tribute to Kirk and McVay.

He could have taken the ‘91 Redskins team and turned them into a 7 win team.

He was a bad coach. I don’t care who else was involved. He’s a nepotism hire of Bruce Allen who never should have been hired and a terrible coach.

2. he is more than a competent offensive mind. You can't take that away from him.
Disagree. The only competent thing he ever did offensively was getting production out of Andy Dalton. Other than that, he stunk as a play caller and OC.

3rd - his last name and big brother.
His brother has won and knows things. He has never won. Does he know some stuff? Sure. But just like I say Mark Sanchez is not credible as a commentator even though he did manage to play in 2 AFC championship games, Jay Gruden has no credibility as an expert either.

E - he's is to many people, likable and personable, and at times pretty funny.
to me he comes off as a lying, schmuck.

Jay is a great guest with Sheehan. He's not afraid to dish stories and give his side of the story. Jay actually is a pretty decent talent evaluator. Bruce rarely ever listened to him.
Sheehan has turned into a complete putz also. I stopped listening to him a while ago, decided to tune in after the win against Detroit, see if he’s changed.

He hasn’t. Slurped Daniels, praised himself, bad analysis.

Galdi is great. I like Bram’s radio show, you sometimes get some insights since he calls the game. Keim’s podcasts are must listen.

Beltway Footbsll Pod with JP and Mitch is entertaining, but not very insightful.

Standing is ok.

That’s about it.
Doc is a moron.
Russell is a complete moron.
BMitch is all schtick at this point.

The rest of them, eh, who cares?

Joe had 10 and 9 win seasons in 4 years. And won a playoff game. Jay had a better QB than Gibbs II ever did and sub optimized everything.

If Bill Belichick was coaching the 2016 team, they win 13 games and make a deep run in the playoffs. And we have no idea what a moronic loser Joe Barry is.

I am all for the "no one would succeed with Snyder" in almost all cases.
Jay Gruden isn't one.
I don't share VoR's strong feelings on Jay's playcalling because I did see WRs get open at times (also McVay went on record at some point about some things he learned from Jay that I believed). That said, I think you can do better than Jay, I don't think he should have a job. I think he rode his last name for quite a ways. I think the Ryans rode their last names WAY better though. Both Ryans and Jay are in the same heap in my opinion. Do they have 0 value? No. Are they the best coordinators available? Also no (in my opinion, from what I can glean).

However, something I feel just as strongly as VoR - Jay Gruden should never be discussed as a head coach. As a human being, I think maybe there should be some significant question marks, and with the mountain of sports media available to us, I don't know why he gets so much airtime either. There are a lot of weird, WEIRD, WEIRD stories out there about what went on during his time as HC. There are too many to be ignored. Way, way too many, from way too many places.

Already mentioned Swearinger. Someone else mentioned Bibbs. Here is another about Bibbs that goes into maybe a big more detail.

So, to recap: You are Jay Gruden. You are given one of the 32 coveted HC positions. You have the well-known last name of your brother. I get it, Snyder is poison, there is a lot of "bro" culture and really, it is kind of a cesspool made by the owner. However, I don't absolve Jay - in fact, I wonder how much Jay fed into that culture based on the stories I have read. Snyder is the root, but Jay's actions that are described by multiple sources seem like they fit right in. I feel like he took a golden opportunity and really badly blew it. I won't say he was purely hired with no rationale (he took the Bengals on an offensive trajectory) but to say the hire had nothing to do with his last name is naive with what we know about Snyder. From these many reports, he just doesn't seem like someone worth anyone's time or respect - just my opinion of course.

Here is how I look at it. Think Nazi Germany. If you were part of the management team or senior coaching staff? You were complicit to one degree or another. Many people (former employees) are very lucky the NFL did not have their version of the Nuremberg trials. This includes Jason Wright.

Our beloved organization was rotten from the top down. I understand that jobs are very rare in the NFL, and I understand about the whole homeboy network, but that does not allow a pass for unprofessional/egregious behavior.

Why do you think Snyder is living off shore? A man without a country? Sold or gave away his American properties and investments? There is a lot more to this than what we know. $6B can easily grease many hands

Can we.send Dog the Bounty Hunter after him?

while this is bad ... how many people HATE the fact that our current roster refers to the coach as "DQ" I mean imagine Brady calling Bill ... "BeeBee"

It would probably normally bother me, because I'm an old school former Marine. But they clearly respect the hell out of Quinn. Everything about the guy demands respect. So it doesn't bother me.

Yeah, we ready. 😁

I think you guys have covered it pretty well with Jay. My 2 cents? I think he was a very, very good OC in Cincy. Look - the guy made Andy Dalton a star. Dalton took those Bengals teams to 5 straight playoff appearances. He was named to the Pro Bowl 3 times. He STILL holds the season passing yards and passing TD records. You think Gruden wasn't a huge part of all that?

He was.

The problem with Dan Snyder was always that he had no values, not moral ones anyway. Things like leadership ability, character, respect - they meant very little to the guy. When he hired Gruden, on a football basis, it wasn't a terrible idea. Jay Gruden was one of the hottest coordinators in the NFL at the time, and yeah, the last name likely didn't hurt. When he was hired, no Redskins fans were screaming 'he's unqualified!'. But when it came to things like demanding respect, leading the team, building a team of other leaders around him who shared the important values - he just was ill-suited to do that. He's a guy you'd love to party with at the local bar. You probably don't want him as your son-in-law though.

I think he's always known a ton about football. He's not built to be a leader of men or leader of a franchise though. Gruden teams weren't all disasters either btw. But his tenure was not a roaring success. I put most of the blame for that on Snyder who never could find the right guy.

Won seven straight, 4 quarters from the Super Bowl! Im still not sure how to act, gotta pinch myself awake! Find myself immersed in youtube Commander videos and analysis while trying to work. Unbelievable year.
Sorry for just rambling but this is truly unreal, yet at the same time I am not stressed, haven't been all playoffs, guess its due to no one having any expectations (unlike Tampa, Detroit and Philly who were expected to be here). Whatever happens, this team is set up for years to come.
