2024 Roster Updates

Let's take a little look-see at the players Ron drafted and who's still on the roster:

2020: None. (Chase Young, Antonio Gibson, S. Charles, Gandy-Golden, Ismael, Hudson, Curl, Smith-Williams.)

2021:
Jamin Davis - LB
Cosmi - OG
St-Juste - CB
Brown - WR
Bates - TE
Forrest - Safety
** That's actually not bad, if Brown actually is the WR2 this year, and Cosmi is the player we think he is... Davis is a whiff in the first round, but after that, at least the players are still on the team. Bates is a REALLY good blocking TE. Forrest, eh?
(Cheeseman, Bradley King, Toney and Milne are gone)

2022:
Mathis - DT (for now)
Robinson JR - RB
Butler - S
Turner - TE (for now)
Chris Paul - OG (for now)
** I wouldn't be surprised if Mathis, Turner and Paul are all roster cuts in the next week)
(Dotson, Howell and Holmes are gone)

2023:
Forbes - CB
Quan Martin - S
Stromboli - Center/Guard
Braeden Danies - OT/OG
Henry - DE
Rodriguez - RB (will soon be cut)
Andre Jones - (I'm not sure if he's on the roster)


So the 2020 draft was a debacle.

2021 looks like it could be ok, especially if Brown develops into a sold WR. Cosmi, Brown and Bates all being solid contributors would make that an above average draft even if the first rounder busts.

2022 doesn't look good. First round pick already gone. Robinson Jr and Percy Butler might be the only 2 remaining from this class in 2-3 weeks. And this was 2 years ago!

2023 really doesn't have a lot of promise, though mostly they are still here. I feel bad for Stromboli. I think he can probably play a bit, but he's landed in a situation which makes that hard.
 
The other point, and I'll grant you that it assumes our Front Office is right about Dotson, we not only moved on from a WR we've deemed 'doesn't have it' but be weakened an interdivisional rival by forcing them to give up a meaningful draft pick for him.
 
I still think Jahan can be successful, but for whatever reason, he underwhelmed last season and didn't prove enough to Quinn, Peters and co. I didn't have Dyami Brown impressing more and being on the roster longer than Jahan on my bingo card, but here we are. Haha. Agree with others - am glad we have a GM and HC with a clear vision and just move on when they see fit.
 
I just saw a post that Dotson's mother is dying of cancer. She's close to Philly so this gives him a chance to be with her. He's struggling with this which is probably why his head isn't into the game right now.

Thanks for sharing that. We often forget that these guys are humans first and players second. Sometimes this even factors into team decisions.
 
Indeed - thanks for that context and posting that. If that is the case, then it does add more clarity to the situation.
 
If a significant part of the reason behind the trade of Dotson to Philly is so that Jahan can spend more time with his mother as she battles cancer than that is pretty amazing. There are many things more important than a game. Kudos to Washington for understanding that.
 
I'm not sure if the mom story is true. Someone posted that story on the ES site in the Dotson thread. No source to back it up though.
 
From ESPN article: Dotson had a 7.4 drop percentage last season, 10th highest in the NFL among starting wide receivers.

I don't know what the reasons for the trade at this exact time were, but overall you could see a pattern emerging that Dotson was a player that was not likely going to earn a second contract in Washington and had not separated himself from guys brought in who had far less NFL experience or are rookies.

Whenever you have a turnover in the front office and coaching staff, the former regime's players come under intense scrutiny.

Ironically, two players that didn't really do well here under Rivera - Dyami Brown and Jamin Davis, are going to make the final roster and look as if they could contribute much more than they did previously.
 
I do like the “no free lunches” subtext. If they will cut/trade a first rounder then nobody’s safe.

Huh. This is interesting. They had been using Stromboli over at guard, and j thought that meant Hassenauer was probably safe.

Guess not.

2 of the players I had on my 53 prediction have been cut or traded already: Hassenauer and Dotson.

I’ll have to update it after the game on Sunday.
 
Well, Dotson would have made the roster without the trade.

At center with Biadiasz, Deiter and Stromberg also having experience I don't know you will see any other players make the team there.

Unless these latest moves are a sign Stromberg is being viewed solely as a guard now and the team needs a #3 center for depth.

The reporting I’ve heard is they are mostly using Stromboli at guard. I see him as one of the primary backup guards to Allegretti and Cosmi. And probably the third center. “Position flex”

After the 2 starters at guard, things get very thin.

Stromberg might actually be the backup center AND primary backup guard. But I think they’ll want one more dedicated center on the roster. At least that’s my guess…
 
So, any surprises on your radar? Who unexpectedly makes the roster? Who gets cut?

I think Mariota does make it. That may not be a shocking move, but I thought Driskell had looked good enough to take away the backup role until I saw him against the Pats starters. I have mixed feelings about whether Martavis Bryant makes it. OTOH, I think the team wants him to, but he still is getting most of his PT in the second halves of preseason games.
 
Heard a lot about Jordan McGee earlier in the summer but not much lately.

Hopefully he is still on the uptrend.

I don't think Mariota was ever seriously in danger. I do think Driskell did enough to solidify the #3 spot and that they'll move on from Hartman and McSorley. I don't think Bryant makes the roster either. As for surprise cuts, I'm going to go bold. Forbes will be released this week.

I think he's been out with injury and is expected to be on the PUP list.

Eh...if the were releasing Forbes, they'd have put him out there last night.
