2024 Roster Updates

My WAY too early Roster projection:

QB: (2) Daniels(r), Mariotta
RB: (3) Robinson, Ekler, Wiley
WR: (6) McLaurin, Dotson, Brown, McCaffrey(r), Zaccheas, Crowder (Punt Returns)
TE: (3) Ertz, Sinnott(r), Bates
OT: (4) Lucas, Wylie, Coleman(r), Scott (Actually, I think OT 4 is playing for another team, but Scott is here)
G: (4) Cosmi, Allegretti, Braeden Daniels, Good-Jones (The bottom 2 guard spots might not be on the team.)
C: (3) Biadasz, Hassenauer, Stromberg (who's a swing Guard/Tackle, and I think he makes it because of that.)
Total: 25

DE: (4) Ferrell, Armstrong, Jean-Baptiste(r), Davis
DT: (4) Allen, Payne, Newton(r), Ridgeway
LB: (5) Luvu, Wagner, Fowler, Pittman, Magee(r) (Magee will make the roster and possibly move to IR immediately, which would open up another spot.)
S: (6) Chinn, Martin, Forrest, Reaves, Butler, Hampton(r)
C: (6) St-Juste, Sainristil(r), Davis, Forbes, Castro-Fields, Igbinoghene

LS: Ott
P: Way
K: Slye (Yes, he's not on the team, but if he doesn't make the team with the Patriots, he'll end up back here.

Other Notables:
- Driskel to the PS, Harman to a runway in Paris.
- Rodriguez will be cut
- They DESPARATELY want to find a spot for Kaz Allen. They even tried him at RB. He fumbled. He can't catch. Eventually, they'll PS him.
- I'd bet there are 3-4 players who are not on the team now who will make the team.
- Crowder at PR doesn't really thrill me, but he can catch and is somewhat productive, and can help at WR in a pinch.
- The Cole Turner story will end with him being cut and MAYBE being signed to the PS.
- Chris Paul will not make the team after Ron thought he could be a starting RG last year.
- The team is REALLY thin at Guard. Allegretti and Cosmi are good as starters. That's why they've been working Stromboli out at guard.
- Big Phil Mathis is going to get cut after being a second round pick for Ron.
- I'm rooting that Benning Potoa'e makes the team because players call him potato, and I find that funny. He'd probably have to beat out Ridgeway. Which is possible.
- After all the fuss, Martavis Bryant will not make the team. But, if he practices well, he could be the 51st (not counting specialists) player who they bring back if/when one of the WRs or RBs gets hurt.
- Depending on Macgee's kneee recovery, he could be out the first 2-3 games. They might just IR him and sign another LB for the first 6 games of the season rather than have him inactive for the first 2-3 games. If they keep him inactive, they probably need to add another LB (who's not on the team), which means somebody else who would normally have made the team does not because they need the roster spot. So a CB/Safety might get cut in favor of a short-term LB.. I think he's going to IR.
 
I gotta say, I’m shocked they released Safety Ben Nikkel. He was my surefire bet to be the steal of the off season.

Also, who is Ben Nikkel?
 
Tyler Owens will make the team in some capacity, probably PS.
 
He's certainly flashed a bunch. If he plays special teams I think he has a shot to make the roster.
 
He’s got a strong leg. Hopefully he can take advantage of this opportunity.
 
Hmmmm.. this puts my theory whoever loses the kicking battle for NE just won’t take the plane home and stay after Sunday night in jeopardy.

Peters clearly knew they had to do something. And this is something. We should celebrate this because Ron would have waited until the kicker situation cost him 6 games before deciding it was time to consider making a change and then another 2 seasons to actually pull the trigger.

It’s interesting the way this played out;
1. Peters clearly didn’t love Slye Guy.
2. They signed McManus.
3. McManus “forgot to mention” he was under investigation for sexual assault.
4. The story broke and McManus was dismissed on June 2nd. Well after the period when most viable players are available.
5. They signed a few guys to try and kick.
6. All of them failed
7. Peters was patient and then finally pulled the trigger on a trade rather than waiting for final cuts.


Given how much the team values picks, even 7th rounders, this is a non-trivial commitment. I wonder, to a small extent, if they panicked a little bit. Made a move instead of waiting for roster cuts.

If we had used a 7th round pick on a kicker, a whole boatload of people would scream you should never spend any draft capital on a kicker. Pitchforks and torches would have come out.

I’m fine with it. A 7th rounder is most likely a special teams contributor, and that’s what you got. (I’ve never understood the narrative you don’t spend draft capital on specialists. How many games come down to a FG? Hell, Brady without Adam V. might have 3 fewer SBs. And not even made it to the first one if he hadn’t hit the game winner in the snow to beat the Raiders in the tuck rule game. Kickers are people too.)

Only quibble… a 7th rounder is not most likely a special teams contributor. Very few 7th round picks make rosters and they are lucky to make the PS. So in reality, no one should be upset by spending one on a kicker imho.
 
Does anyone know what the conditions are in this conditional pick? I would think one condition is that he even makes the opening day roster. But also, does the cost go up at all? I don’t know? But I’m curious. If the guy ends up being a good kicker this year, the cost of a 7th rounder will be worth it.
 
I don't know. My guess is that it is conditional on him making the final roster, but that's strictly a guess.

I have only seen it reported by ‘sources’ so far. So, like the agent perhaps? I’m going to guess that the transaction hasn’t been through the league system yet.
 
I would guess that the conditional is, he makes the roster and they get the 7th rounder. I don’t think it would be conditional in terms of a higher pick if he performs well.
