QB or not QB

Actually, Maye is a lot better prospect coming out of college than Josh Allen initially looked to be. Allen completed just 56% of his passes his last 2 seasons of college football. That's terrible. Maye averaged almost 10 percentage points better. That's a massive difference.

Maye doesn't NEED to get a ton more accurate at the NFL level. He's already damn accurate - and with some clean-up of his footwork and technique is likely to get even more so.

That's the problem with the Josh Allen comps. They aren't fair to Maye :)

The other problem with them is that Josh Allen is a unicorn - one of the few QBs ever who came into the NFL as an inaccurate passer, and developed into an accurate one. Where are the other examples of that happening in the NFL - because I can't think of a lot of others?
 
The overall comp though is a tall, rangy kid with a strong arm and mobility who needs some polish and greater fluidity to his game.

The one thing I agreed with Griffin about was the comment that some organizations and staffs may be put off by Maye because they aren’t confident in their own abilities to develop a young passer.

Coaches always want a plug and play guy because it makes them look good.

But that player’s ceiling may be lower and 3 years later you have a team with buyer’s remorse.
 
Just for shits and giggles, I went on ESPN and used their analytic draft simulator to see who teams would 'take' in various scenarios.

The most ironic and strange draft I ran was one in which I pretended to be the Bears GM and selected Jayden Daniels.

The simulator then ran Washington's pick as Drake Maye with the Patriots taking Marvin Harrison Jr at #3.

The CARDINALS at #4 took Caleb Williams.

Arizona also picked up a later first round pick from the Raiders at #13.

I would have to believe that meant Kyler Murray went to Las Vegas in a draft day trade.

Jayden Daniels
Drake Maye
Caleb Williams

After months of evaluation, investigation, projections, arguments, rumor mills, etc by ‘experts’ far and wide…the top 3 QB prospects for the upcoming NFL Draft are (in alphabetical order):

Jayden Daniels
Drake Maye
Caleb Williams
 
But does Daniels want to come to DC?

While rumors go for and against teams and players I only recall the rumor out of his camp that he liked the idea of playing for the Raiders.

Funny since they are picking #13 and not likely to have the ammo to move up that far.

Thats perhaps what gets me the most about Daniels and his camp, they almost seem condescending to teams drafting higher up, as if he would be doing them a favor by coming there.

Like it or not we don ‘t see that vibe out of Maye, Penix or McCarthy.

They seem complimentary of their interviews and talk about coming in and making a difference on these clubs.
 
It doesn’t matter what Daniels wants. He will go where Goodell tells him to.

What’s he going to do? Refuse? Try to force a trade? Be a pain in the ass for 4 years? Play in the UFL? Quit football and go to grad school? Become a rapper? Change his gender?

I kid, I kid. All of this silliness will be over Thursday evening.
 
The quarterback we pick isn't all that important. What I mean by that is if we had drafted Maholmes I think he would have been a bust. Well, maybe not a bust, but not a phenomenon. Likewise, no QB could have overcome Spurrier. A quarterback thrives when they are in the right scheme, with the right complimentary pieces, and the right coaching/teaching. Joe Montana would not have been Joe Montana if his coach were Don CoryelI.

Daniels, Maye, and McCarthy all could be great. Whether they will 'depends on what happens after the draft.

The destination and situation and what kind of support a QB gets drafted into is a big factor in terms of success. Om has talked a lot about this. But when history shows a 30% hit rate for highly drafted QBs, which QB we pick is incredibly important.
 
Yeah, I worried I stated it in a way that left open that interpretation. I think what I'm really saying is that I really feel pretty confident that the talent is there with either of the QBs we might pick so the talent isn't going to be the deciding factor. Which of these guys (if any) turn out to be the best is going to be less about arm and forty speed and more about scheme, coaching/receptivity to teaching, intangibles, etc.

The player, of course, matters, but again, it's a little less about native talent and more about the hidden internals (work ethic, processing speed, etc..) and the externals (teammates, coaching, play calling,) that will tell the tale.

I can envision Daniels being really successful and also see a path to him being a bust. I can envision Maye being really successful and a way he could be a bust. Same with McCarthy. What I see with all of them is that they are made of high quality clay so I'm not as worried about the pick, but what happens after it.

That said, I'm lying, because I do have my preferences.
 
Ideally you want to go up to the podium and select a guy that wants to be here or is at least open minded to the opportunity.

No, Daniels isn’t going to sit out or go to Canada nor does he have the option of going to play baseball.

But the last thing I want to see is a guy that comes in like a Bryce Harper did with the Nationals praising the Yankees and openly looking forward with his agent to the day he can reach free agency.

This is a really important point.

Brock Purdy was Mr Irrelevant, but went into a professionally run team, with an excellent Front Office, an excellent Coach, and a team that was pre-built and superbowl ready. His skill set as a game manager with a low ceiling (so to speak) may have seen him drop to the bottom of the draft, but he fell into the perfect situation for his talents.

Love him or hate him, he made a pretty good point. Teams tend to give up on QBs way too early these days because they're all chasing the superhuman starter. IF a rookie is lucky he gets maybe 2 years to show what he has. Some only get a year. But he was talking about Josh Allen, and said Buffalo were unusually patient with him and that patience was justified.

I think you're right, Burgold, if Mahomes had fallen to a team like the dysfunctional Redskins at the time, he likely would have been forced to start year one, struggled, and the team would likely impatiently have cut bait and chased the next big fish. Maybe his fate to this day would have been as a career journeyman or backup. But, he fell to a team that was, again, professionally run, playoff ready, and had the benefit of sitting behind Alex Smith to learn the ropes before having to step in and start.
 
Incidently, that's also why I think Howell stands a very good chance of being a pretty good QB a couple of years from now. What we saw last year was raw, but if Seattle take their time with him, I think he'll reward them.
It's sad that if he does blossom, it won't be here, but I also understand the need to Washington and it's new FO/Coaching structure to start afresh.

I think this is absolutely true. I also think it's why so many of us are vacillating between Daniels and Maye.
There's not much between them in my eyes, and I'd be happy with either. I think both could flourish in a nurturing environment which it looks like Peters and co have gone out of their way to try and create.

I also think that this is where the 'group visit' is going to show a lot about these guys and who they are to Peters and co.
 
I sure hope we go with Maye. The vibe Daniles gives along with his his running style that scares me about injury makes me think Maye is the better prospect

I get your point and think it’s a great one. While we have preferences and we believe Peters has his guy as well, the development that comes after the draft is the most important thing. We believe these top QBs are close in talent while each having different strengths and weaknesses. So how will the coaches and the team build with that guy to make him successful. How will they maximize his strengths, minimize his weakness, while at the same time getting him to improve those weaknesses. If that doesn’t happen, then all the talent in the world will be wasted.

Yeah, I feel the same. I will be stoked with either and do think that Peters and Quinn can set up a winning environment.

Also I believe that Daniels' agent (or even Daniels himself) can feel that the group meeting was "weird" but still also be happy overall to come here, and that's Ok.
 
I don't remember ever seeing a team have all of the prospects coming in at the same time, so that's a new one for me.

The 49ers did it evidently but I don't recall anyone ever praising it or objecting to it or it would have become known to the rest of us outside of SF.

That said, it appears whatever the feelings of agents and players most guys were able to come in, smile, get their interviews done with the team and get out of town.

That's the professional response to a work interview.

This isn't college recruiting where the 5 star prospect expects the team to go to his house and sweep the floor and make the beds and fix dinner to show how much he is loved and valued :rotflmao:
 
Bill Belichick said he did this all the time in New England. It's not unique, the media just wants us to believe it is. Because, Washington :)
 
Yeah, I've hear that too. I've also heard that Peters did this in SF. So this isn't a unique event and any media member that cared about reporting the facts and not making a story should be able to easily find that out. What I also keep hearing from media people is that it's a problem because they didn't roll out the red carpet for Jayden Daniels and make him feel wanted by the team. Which is crazy because this isn't free agency, it's a draft. Unless you do something to piss him off and he refuses to play for you, he's going to be a member of the team if you call his name.

My opinion is the media is pissed off because they have gotten nothing from the team as to what their plans are. So with no information, they are going to make up whatever they can as a sign of leading one direction or the other. They are hoping the team comes out and admits or denies something, giving them any sort of hint of the direction. But once again, the team has done none of that. So the media just keeps running with the story. It also fits past narrative of disfunction with franchise. So it's natural to spin a story like this into disfunction.
 
I don’t know how they argue that when reportedly Daniels is the only one who they met at the airport?
