2024 - Way too early draft thread

Exactly. Lamar Jackson has some RARE abilities. Lamar Light is not the same thing. Daniels looks like Icabod Craine running around the field, not like Lamar or Josh Allen who look more like a LB. Yes, he can run, but the end of those runs is as often as not a car wreck.

This!

Given how loose Quinn runs his schemes on defense it's not hard to understand why players like him.

These guys that want to be friends first and coaches second usually don't make it long-term.

Don't get me wrong. Jerk coaches usually don't last either.

But there has to be a balance.

And from what we saw of the Falcons defense in the Super Bowl against New England and the Cowboys defense against the Packers this season, I am finding it hard to believe that Quinn is a great coach.

When the bright lights are on what do you do? That's usually the test :)

Imagine taking those hits by NFL LBs and Safeties.

Part of me is: "Hey kid I love your passion!"

The rationale part: "Holy crap kid you're going to be crippled at 28 if you keep this up."

Nothing personal against the young man, but I'd rather he be someone else's IR report.

This to me looks like RGIII all over again.

Running straight up and down and not protecting himself.

His slight frame is not built for durability at the next level.

PASS.

Today I watched every offensive play by LSU vs Alabama from a couple of months ago. I held no preconceived notions about Jayden Daniels so I watched without bias except for having concerns about his frame within the style that he plays. I will admit to wanting to find out for myself what all the hubbub was about. I also don’t believe that this Alabama defense is on the same level as those to which I have been accustomed to previously watching.

Here is my evaluation, offered for free as always-

1. A clear one-read QB
2. Not particularly accurate (even to wide-open receivers)
3. Arm strength looks to be enough for the NFL (though I wouldn’t call it elite)
4. Tough kid (though he did get tossed around like a child on a couple of occasions and was knocked out of the game by a viscous Dallas Turner hit)
5. Runs like a deer (but deer don’t usual fare well versus vehicles in traffic)

Considering how far he has to go toward becoming a competent NFL passer and with the grave danger that professional defenses will administer when he runs, I would not be in favor of drafting him at all much less #2 overall.

I'm enjoying this conversation and have been thinking on how you determine if you MUST take a QB with the #2 pick. If it's not impossible, I think at the very least it's extremely hard to look at historical draft positions and success of QBs (winning Super Bowls) to project success in the future (albeit directional success) because there are so many data points that must be considered. And many of them are not quantifiable. Just off the top of my head, if you were building an analytical model I think you would have to consider at least the following:

  1. Depth of the QB field in that particular draft (sheer number and relative pre-draft score between them).
  2. Depth of the projected QB class the following year
  3. QB needs of teams drafting in the top 10.
  4. Supporting cast on the team drafted (strength of positions, does it included Hall of Famers)
  5. Did the offensive system play to the QB strengths?
  6. Did the QB have the ability to sit and learn or were they thrown to the wolves?
  7. Coaching (ability and stability)
  8. Owner support
  9. You would probably need to have some sort of way to measure the state of the league play at the time. eg It was much more of a running league but over time QBs are relied upon more to pass.
I always think of Dan Marino...drafted 27th. He never won a Super Bowl, but I would have been ecstatic with him on my team. The QBs drafted that year (in order) - John Elway (1st), Todd Blackledge (7th), Jim Kelly (14th), Ton Eason (15th), Ken O'Brien (24th) and Marino (27th).

So, I think I tend to fall in the camp that it's no necessarily a no-brainer to stay at #2 and pick a QB. I think you have to evaluate the state of your team, where the holes are, and what you can improve if you do/don't pick the QB.

I don't believe the narrative that Daniels has now moved from a second or third round pick before last season to now a second or third OVERALL pick.

A player's measurables and capabilities rarely move forward that much in less than 12 months.

I would not be surprised if Penix is the quarterback that bursts onto the scene as a guy taken in that 10-15 range in Round 1.

2 torn ACLs and shoulder issues already. That’s about as risky a pick as one could think of.

When I started to look at the videos of the LSU plays that Daniels made I was surprised by how the ball placement was all over the place and receivers were catching balls with outstretched hands and behind their bodies bringing them in.

Daniels is hardly a pinpoint passer despite all of the hype over the yards per pass completion and other stats he put up in 2023.

I am mostly in this camp. The tape doesn’t lie. He is a huge risk and I would not be surprised if he drops on draft day, although odds tells us that some Qb desperate team will trade up for him in that 3-5 range. I am so relieved that we are at 2 so we can take Maye if we like him. I think we will. Jmo.

Maybe the lesson of Dwayne Haskins (at least for us fans) is that a QB who was inaccurate in college stays inaccurate. Now, I admit I was fooled by Haskins because I looked at his completion rate at Ohio State and it was in the high 60's or 70's and I couldn't understand how people could say he was in accurate while posting that kind of completion rate.

This was a great examples of how misleading statistics can be. Now there are counter examples. QBs who really took to teaching, corrected their mechanics and overcame their failures. I suspect accuracy can be taught or improved upon to a great degree. However, I fully admit I was wrong and when it comes to Daniels this year I'm going to trust everyone who says his success comes with an asterisk and his QBing comes with numerous red flags.

QB is the most over-drafted and reached-for position in the NFL. Guys are climbing draft boards not because their value is increasing but because team desperation is increasing.

Second and third-round talent goes in the first because teams fear missing out. Then expectations go up because a guy was taken higher than he should have been.

The other thing that happens is that teams miss out on getting a player who has the talent to be drafted high. This depletes the high-end talent pool of their roster, especially if the QB doesn't outperform their real talent level. Too many years of over-drafting like that and you end up with...well...the current Commanders roster which is deep on late-round talent and short on legit first-round guys.

Granted, we did it with guys who weren't QBs but the net effect is the same.

My guess is honest draft boards have Harrison as the best player in this draft. Williams might be second or one of the 2 OTs might be.

The one caveat to me is that wide receiver like quarterback is a position with a number of high profile draft busts over the years.

It seems safer to take the top rated Left Tackle or Tight End if you already have a franchise quarterback.
