Regarding Eric Bieniemy, I have not seen this mentioned anywhere previously but if Shane Steichen becomes the Colts new HC as expected, Philly will be in need of a new OC.

That would certainly be a more attractive opportunity than either Washington or Baltimore, no?

One would think. I would assume he'd get a look but I don't know if there's someone already on the Eagles staff they are looking to elevate. And unlike DC, the Eagles could have their pick of any candidate still available.

Both Reid and Mahomes were vocal about their appreciation of Bieniemy after the game. Was that simply post-game emotion? Are they trying to help him go away?

Well, assuming for the sake of argument that he has worn out his welcome, having him get a job elsewhere is what KC would hope for right? It makes moving forward a lot easier than if they have to take on and address the issue themselves.

But who knows? He does have a significant 'rep' though, and I think Rivera would be foolish to ignore that.

I think the whole succession of 1 year contracts is about more than 'he's going to get a head coaching gig'. I've never heard of a teams doing 1 year deals with an OC they really like based on an assumption he's going to leave as a HC.

Maybe the guy isn't a good fit to be a head coach. There seems to be an assumption that he is and that he deserves a chance, which is something I don't get.

Not all Colonels become Generals. Not all VPs go on to be Presidents. Not all Asst Principles move up and get their own school.

Nor should they.

Sometimes that next-to-last step is as far as a particular person can go.

Yes, he has been a long-time coordinator on a highly successful team. Yes, he has all the credentials on paper for the job. Those qualifications get him invited to be interviewed but that is all they do.

I'd been wondering that every year, but we just (or at least I just) learned about the various character questions from a few years back. That's the one thing that actually makes sense to me.

I think there is one very simple reason why he has gotten so many HC interviews.

No telling what kind of vibe the guy brings in an interview either. I've interviewed guys with all the qualifications who didn't do it for me in an interview. Hell, I had an interview 10 days ago that I thought went well but I haven't heard a word back from the recruiter since. Guessing I said something that rubbed the hiring manager the wrong way but I likely won't ever know what it was.

I'd been wondering that every year, but we just (or at least I just) learned about the various character questions from a few years back. That's the one thing that actually makes sense to me.

All just conjecture, though.

His last character transgression was 22 years ago. Though admittedly there was a period in which his behavior was very poor, to be kind.

Is there a statute of limitations on one’s ability to grow, mature, and straighten their life out or can one never evolve?

At least in the public record, that is 100% true Chris. Whenever 'character' comes into the discussion, I think about the worst things I did as a younger man and whether those things taken in isolation are a good measuring stick for who I am? Obviously, most of us have 'histories' including things we'd like to forget, but we do manage to evolve. I brought them up primarily as a possible explanation for why he has repeatedly been spurned by teams.

Without being around the man for months and years, tough to know who he is, right?

If the ball is in Bienemy’s court, I don’t think he’d choose the Eagles because there he’d be basically in the same situation as with KC. I mean would anyone bat an eye if Philly’s offense was good next year?

Bienemy would get no credit. Philly is not a stepping stone and would actually be a step back since Reid is much closer to retiring and needing a successor.

You bring up a good point though burgold - why wouldn't Bienemy sit tight (if he's in great standing currently) and wait for Reid to hang them up? Seems like Reid would be highly likely to hang it up here in the next 4-5 years max?

Yes and beyond ‘who he is‘ I still have absolutely no clue as to exactly what role he even plays in the KC offense.

Totally on-point, brother. And the answer is, I don't know. I'd need to be the one doing the interview and looking him in the eye.

Agreed, burgold, although I would assume he would have the opportunity to be the primary play-caller in an offense very similar in talent to KC. But, it would indeed be difficult for him to make a noticeable impact.
