I wasn't bragging about Heinicke's performance in the Dallas game. I was pointing out how awful the WFT defense was in that Dallas game, just like it was in numerous games last year.

I can easily pick on Wentz's game-breaking mistakes last year, just like you're doing with Heinicke. Until Heinicke throws a left-handed INT from his own end zone like Wentz did last year, I think I'll have the upper hand in that debate.

That play and a few others I saw from Wentz last year are what give me concern about him. But even with those bad plays, he still had 27 TDs and only 7 INTs in 17 games. Heinicke on the other hand had 20 TDs and 15 INTs in 16 games. I don’t have a crystal ball to know who will be good this year, but even with the concerns I have with Wentz, I’ll take 27 and 7 over 20 and 15 every day.
 
I don't think it's a coincidence that both Philly and Indy were so quick to move on from Wentz. He is quickly regressing and he has had some real bonehead plays that will scare most teams away.

Him having that horrible Monday is one thing, but sweat chasing him down and telling him to get rid of the ball because he's known not to is another. Wentz ran out of bounds behind the LOS anyways.

The contract we signed a declining QB to makes me very weary. He isn't the "North Dakota tough" that gruden used to go on and on about. He's been hurt, he makes bad decisions, and he cost more than he should have.
 
Reports out of Commanders camp have Wentz reading message boards and already ...

Great conversation. I think most of us were closer to viewing Heinicke as Theismann does early on. But over time it became impossible to ignore his limitations. There are concerns with Wentz, but he has far fewer limitations.

The bottom line is that our coaches made it emphatically clear how they feel about both guys and which guy they believe is capable of being a starting caliber QB.
 
I know i'm nitpicking here but this team CONTINUES to ignore the details.

WE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SEE THE WHITE LINES THROUGH THE LOGO.. it looks spraypainted on and faded at that. It drives me nuts how NOBODY says "ya know that might not look good" every time they try to do something...

Why would you take that, if those stats don't equal wins? The Colts were 9 - 8 last year and missed the playoffs because of two horrible losses that can be blamed almost entirely on Wentz. Cousins had good stats with the Vikings last year and they still missed the playoffs. Perhaps the Vikings would have been better off running the ball more.

All INTs are not equal, just like all TD passes are not equal. Three of Heinicke's INTs were Hail Mary passes or 4th down throws at the end of the game. I remember two other INTs that were in garbage time in the 4th quarter against KC and GB when the games were already over. INTs are meaningless when you're losing by more than 16 points with 5 minutes left in a game. I don't care if Heinicke or ANY QB throws 100 INTs in the 4th quarter when the game is already over. Therefore, you can basically throw 5 of Heinicke's INTs out the window.

Heinicke played extremely well in most of the WFT's winnable games. He piled up some INTs in games that Washington was not going to win anyway, with a few exceptions. He did not cost his team two losses, the way that Wentz did last season. And I read somewhere that Wentz has more fumbles than any QB over the past 5 or 6 seasons. QB fumbles don't show up in QB ratings.

And you're comparing someone in his first season as a starter to a veteran who has played a lot more games. Not entirely fair, in my opinion.

Still debatable, in my opinion. Heinicke might have more limitations as a passer, but he still might have more playmaking ability overall. That's why I compare him very favorably to Theismann.

For example, that 4th down throw against Carolina in the 4th quarter that kept their drive going for the game winning FG. Heinicke used his elusiveness to escape a sack and make a very difficult throw. Perhaps Heinicke's best play last season. I don't think Wentz would have been able to make that play.

I bet we're not the only fans dealing with this.
Example : the Raiders and Cliff Branch.
His had to wait until 36 years after he retired, and 3 years after he died (almost 3 years, to the day)
So that should at least serve as hope, for him.
And to your point, he really should be in the HOF, especially considering how it seems like they have really lowered the standards for induction.
Sometimes I drop my jaw when I see who is inducted.
Are they going to need a bigger building in Canton soon, to contain all the busts ?

Canton is going an entire city overhaul. They're building a casino, hotels, and lots of places to make it a destination spot. It's going to look really good once they finish.

I’m probably a lot more sympathetic to your argument than you realize. I pretty much called Heinicke’s playoff performance in 2020 based on his quarter the week before. There is zero doubt that Heinicke is a baller, and in some ways I like him so much I’d rather lose with him than hope to win with guys with better ‘pedigrees’. He deserves our fandom. But ultimately, it’s not a Hollywood movie and I think his limitations will always limit him. That being said, if we find ourselves with TH under center I am all in…

Next year, for the 2023 season, Taylor Heinicke will be a Starter in Washington.

I think that Russell Wilson-LITE can beat out both Drew and Gino. At the same time, I'm sure Seattle spends a #1 pick on a QB next year.
But perhaps TH fills the role until, and if, the new QB is ready.

I could probably find another team or 2, that would be interested in him as a possible starter.

Washington has the makings of a diversified offense. With McLaurin and Dotson you have two playmaking wide receivers, there are two productive backs in Gibson and McKissic that help out in the passing game and another RB with size in Robinson who should help in short yardage and ball control.

There is no reason to predict Wentz will fail because Washington doesn't have skill players who can beat defenses.

The key to Wentz is to not put him in the position the Eagles and Colts did of making him the 'savior' and expecting him to produce the Aaron Rodgers type plays on his own.

I thought when he went to the Colts the coaches that had been with him in Philly would get him set on the right track, but as the season went on it appears from what I am reading that they were increasingly putting pressure on him to make the plays he did in 2017 as the offense became less productive overall.

That caused a regression for Wentz with the added pressure leading to increased turnovers.

What's important here is recognizing that Wentz with his arm and size can be a functional and efficient quarterback, but the hopes pinned to him that he is going to morph into a Russell Wilson or Patrick Mahomes play-maker should be set off to the side.

One of Joe Gibbs' best qualities was properly and soberly evaluating the talent that was presented to him.

Wentz has more than enough ability to help get this team back to the playoffs, but it's not necessarily going to be as a headliner and all-pro.

The acquisition of Dotson, Robinson, Turner and the re-acquisition of McKissic and McLaurin to me shows the team realizes to be effective the offense has to take the pressure off Wentz by giving him multiple options.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced at a Tuesday press conference that the team has fired defensive line coach Sam Mills III. Mills, who is the son of Hall of Famer Sam Mills, was in his third season with the team.
 
Sad to see a good man lose his job.
But there's a couple bright spots.
Mills III goes back a long way with Rivera, and if Rivera can part ways with him, and after only a couple seasons coaching together, it seems to show he doesn't hold any unbreakable favoritism/nepotism towards his former close comrades.
Also shows Rivera's seriousness about winning, and making whatever changes are necessary.

On another note, do you guys think this could be a clue that Kerrigan could be hired ?
The timing is interesting. They just announced recently, Kerrigan would be sitting in on practices, to see if he wants to coach.
Not saying he would be the new DL coach. However, since they promoted our Assistant DL coach to take Mill's place, perhaps Kerrigan could take over for the vacant Assistant spot. Again, the timing seems too coincidental.
