Haskins - Going Forward

Since you guys already know Haskins is a bust after a handful of games with a lame duck staff and three games in a new offense without much of an off-season, how bout helping ol DP44 out and give me the Powerball numbers for tonight?
As far as Haskins goes, anyone here old enough to remember what Mark Rypien looked like when he hit the field?
Turnover machine.
Some players take time to develop.
Good to know you guys have the patience for a rebuild.....
😆

Rumor is that Meyer told Rivera that in order to get all you can from Haskins you have to call him out and challenge him....

I doubt Haskins' marksmanship will ever improve to a passable level.

He's got McNabb's inaccuracy combined with Grossman's aggression.

That's a lot of field postion and points left on the board, which will cost games.

12 games, 11 TDs, 10 ints... Grossman aggression?

Take out the 4 he threw last year in games he got thrown into with no practice that number is 10 starts, 6 ints. That's 3 picks in 9 starts, then a clearly bad game....

I don’t know. You can almost make a drinking game out of his McNabb-esque worm burners. Accuracy is not Haskins’ strong point.

I thought the knock was when he misses he misses high and he lacks touch... now he has a short arm and spikes the ball....?

He does miss high plenty. Also throws a ton of worm burners. Like I said, accuracy isn’t his string suit.

I think Haskins is actually quite athletic. I know the current idea of the ideal NFL QB sets guys like Mahomes and Murray as the model. Haskins will never be that kind of QB. But I’ve actually been calling for more designed runs for Haskins precisely because he is a big physical athletic kid. He isn’t ‘slow’, again unless we are comparing him to those freakishly speedy and elusive types of QBs.

I also think we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge he is probably in the best shape of his life right now and more agile than when he came into the league.

I think concerns over his accuracy and mechanics far outweigh concerns over his speed and quickness. But even there, he completed over 70% of his passes in his last season at OSU... but he hasn’t yet adjusted to the NFL. He may never adjust, but I don’t see how those who call him inaccurate so easily dismiss his college performance (even if it was just one great season). He hasn’t been accurate as a pro, but I’m not sure that means he can’t be?
Murray and Lamar are in the same class in terms of measurables. Mahomes is actually in the average "typical" in terms of measurables but he's still football fast and better than Haskins fast.

The standard for athletic is Rodgers, Romo, and Roethlisberger or if you want vintage, Montana. Eels.

He is slow top-speed wise and really so slow acceleration-wise, Pathetcially so. Sending him out to run is like sending Rex Grossman, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner out to run.

Sexy Rexy ended his career with a .93:1 TD:INT ratio, with 56 TDs and 60 INTs. Haskins has a 1.11:1 TD:INT ratio. Every pick in the Cleveland game can be traced to fundemental football error rather than freak chance encounters. Overthrew one guy by a mile and stared him down, and he stared down on the other two picks.

Haskins basically has a ceiling of being a mediocrity at best. Beauty drives interrupted with garbage drives. Sacks, INTs, Fumbles, something that can go wrong.
Accuracy is pretty much unfixable if it is a major issue. Tebow couldn't fix it, nor did McNabb.

So a guy has a + int ratio, and 10 games into his 2nd offense in the NFL you can already tell his ceiling? You might ultimately be right but he has had next zero chance to succeed between a HC that didnt want him last year and zero practice offseason this year. I am just holding my final judgement for a while.

I will back off because we both clearly have opinions that we dont agree with.

Grasping at straws. There is going to be a little variation, but someone who is close to a 1:1 TD:ratio is in general someone who is productive yet also sufficiently harmful to the team. Only guy who got away with it was Favre, and even he, at the tail end of his career, had a 1:1 TD:INT ratio, a far cry from his near 3:1 ratio when he won his Super Bowl.

I mean, Baker Mayfield and Phillip Rivers were near 1:1 ratio last season.

He is unathletic, and inaccurate. Plus, he doesn't limit his mistakes. He's like Ron Weasley's wand. You don't know what you get and when he backfires, it's spectacularly painful.

You call it grasping at straws, I call it patience.... your opinion is clear

What makes you believe that? He could have brought in Cam, he could have drafted Tua, he could have started Allen. You must really want to believe something that contradicts all rational evidence.

The fact he didn’t bring Cam in says to me that unproven 2nd yr players are more valuable in his eyes & his best days are behind him. Drafted Tua with Chase Young on the board? There was 0% chance of that happening, no team would have done that. My rational evidence is RR has never endorsed Haskins without a caveat, at least in every quote I’ve seen him make regarding DH.

After a very bad game Haskins is now on a short leash, right or wrong it is what it is. RR actually went from standing behind the kid right after the game to publicly stating the team deserves better. Seems we’ll have to revisit this in a few weeks when/if Allen gets the nod.

It's not like what you said has been forgotten. Saying that he has a postiive TD:INT ratio simply because he has 12 TDs to 11 INTs like it is a good is an attempt to fool the stupid into believing an inference with no basis.

Comparing a career ratio with one held by a QB who hasn't started an entire season yet is ludicrous. He had a 70% completion rate at Ohio State, both in 2017 when he played in 8 games, and his full season in 2015. He didn't play in a dink and dunk offense. I watched every game of his full season and he was accurate as hell.

The NFL is different. He wasn't running a complex offense at OSU, never took a snap under center, didn't have to even make complex play calls at the line. But he was....accurate is hell. He's not comfortable yet. He hasn't adjusted to NFL speed or lots of other aspects of the pro game. It's possible you're right and he never will - but you don't know. You're just spouting an opinion like all the rest of us - so let's stop pretending you do know.

But you don't complete 70% of your career college passes on a powerhouse football team without having some skills.

OK. First off i've tried to bow out on more than one occasion allowing differing opinions to remain that... but look.

It's not like what I've said has been forgotten? Are you keeping score on me now? What exactly are you remembering? Not once did I say his TD:INT ratio was something to be proud of, just that it was not on the level of "Grossman aggression." Grossman had 4 TDs : 6 INTs in his first 6 starts, just for reference..... I simply pointed out that his ratio is + (meaning >1:1, not that it's a good thing) in a situation that NOBODY would succeed in. Not once did I say that meant he was going to be a good QB at this level... just that the book had not been written, and I'm not willing to say he can't do it. I even said you might be right.

The whole point of his ratio was to contradict your notion that he has Grossman aggression... suggesting that he's careless with the ball, when in fact he's the opposite. He's been timid with his passing this year prior to the game vs Cleveland. In fact, he's had 2 games that have had multiple interceptions in his 12 appearances. His first career appearance when he was thrust into the game due to injury. It was no secret that Haskins to ZERO reps with the offensive unit last year when he wasn't starting. That's not a lack of reps with the first team, HE WAS LITERALLY NOT RUNNING THE PLAYS IN OUR PLAYBOOK. He was running scout team. So he walks into a game vs the Gians in his first career appearance without having practiced the playbook and throws 3 ints. OK... not a great game. His only other multi-int game was this past weekend vs Cleveland. A BAD GAME. Likely the worst of his career. Those two games account for 6 of his 10 INTs. Those are the EXCEPTION at this point in his career, not the rule

If you want to keep score, look back further than this conversation. I have been openly critical of his technique, and equally frustrated with his decision making. I also understand the situation we are in, and am willing a give credit where it is due. He's got one of the best arms currently in the NFL. That's not a joke. The ball comes out of his hand on a level that most NFL QBs cannot achieve. That's something that you cannot teach. There is very little room to develop someone's arm, it's either there, or it isn't... and he can spin it with the best of them. He has a very large hill to climb with a lot of things working against him. His technique is lacking. He tends to rely on his arm, throwing off his back foot even when unnecessary. He also plays a half second behind. I BELIEVE that is because the game is moving to fast for him RIGHT NOW. As he gets more reps, see's more things, and gets more comfortable I THINK this will change. That does not mean I'm calling my shot or stating that he's the next big thing.... simply observing what I think he needs to do to get better, because, well... I'd like the QB of my favorite team to be good.

So... AGAIN.. You're entitled to your opinion. I disagree with a lot of it. I might be wrong, and you might ultimately be right. I don't have a ton of confidence in Haskins at this moment, but I am willing to look at all the factors and would prefer he get a chance to prove us wrong. Haskins being successful is what's best for this organization going forward. Spending another first round pick on a QB limits what we can do elsewhere. The best thing for the team is for him to be a winner. I want him to be a winner. I'm willing to be patient and give him a chance to do that in a season when it's highly unlikely we are successful regardless of who is at QB. Does Allen buy us a 1 or 2 wins? Maybe... Me? I'd rather KNOW Haskins isn't the guy come January and make the determination to move on and be comfortable with it. Ya know, instead of going into an offseason with QB controversies and the ever popular argument about how maybe that guy didn't actually get enough of a chance to prove it (Ahem... Kirk Cousins vs RG3 vs Colt McCoy).

Washington could move on from Dwayne Haskins if he continues to struggle

When Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins steps on the field today against the Baltimore Ravens, the pressure will be on. And not just because the former first-rounder is facing one of the NFL's best defenses.

Sources say Haskins enters a critical stretch for his own development and must improve greatly for him to keep the job. In fact, there is a chance if it goes particularly badly today, Haskins could be pulled at some point in favor of Kyle Allen, who was with Ron Rivera in Carolina.

Haskins, who Washington took No. 15 overall in 2019, is coming off a woeful performance, throwing three picks against the Browns in a 34-20 loss. He's also been sacked 10 times in three games.

While four games into a season could be considered early to move on from a player thought to be the franchise QB of the future, the urgency comes not just because of Haskins' performance last week. Some of it comes because of the schedule.

Washington's next five games are against the Rams, the Giants twice, the Cowboys and the Lions, and the thinking is that improved QB play could help them take advantage of a window of opportunity. It's possible Allen is the quarterback in place to see if that can happen....

he needs to do better. I think we can all agree to that. The only course if he doesn't is to bench him. I think we can all agree to that, too.

but, how well can he play against a stout D like Baltimore? He will have to find out.
