Coronavirus - COVID19

So guys, a couple of comments (from a healthcare provider perspective)...

First of all, patient deaths are rarely the result of one thing. Short of a traumatic event, such as a motor vehicle accident, or fall with a brain bleed, rarely do folks die of 'one thing'. Even in those kinds of cases, comorbidities and chronic conditions already present may great impact if someone survives or not.

In the case of COVID-19, a patient who ultimately dies and had other major health issues - how can one not assume COVID-19 was a factor (if not the outright cause)? Are we suggesting it was just 'coincidental' that they happened to have a coronavirus infection but that it wasn't central to their demise? I am guessing (and yeah, it's just a guess) that some of the 'inflation' of death counts has less to do with some sneaky agenda and more to do with the reality that some patient start out with mild to no symptoms, but then quickly get into trouble and either die at home or shortly after hospitalization. In those cases, COVID-19 infection is a post-mortem finding. That's just one example where a patient death may initially be reported as cardiac arrest, or respiratory failure, only later to be more accurately changed to 'COVID-19' related.

I see nothing ominous about this. And I would be far more concerned with under-reporting of infection rates/deaths than the reverse.

in times like this when we are looking for honest and genuine truths, to say that we had 500 deaths in one day yet offer no real explanation as to why, any asterisk, or anything to set it different from the legitimate 24 hours deaths...is dishonest to say the least.

if we need to make those deaths as COVID, cool. mark them separately. we did not have 500 people die overnight from COVID. that number could be the reports coming in from different days, could be COVID mixed with other things, etc.

We went from 10,000 cases reported per day, to under 500.
we went from 1,000 people dying per day, to not even 1000 total.

the news and media are now manipulating things for their own agenda. "when we finally emerge from this it will be to a new world like post 9/11" really? we are comparing a pandemic to a terrorist attack?

they are canceling events in August and September already. why? How can you tell me we need to recover the economy, get back to life as normal, and then cancel something 5 months away?

I just think the media is starting to lie more and more to keep us indoors and under their control. i believe the virus is real, I believe people get sick and die. I believe all of that. but, I believe they are now starting to flex power and lie to us to keep us here.

Ohio had 500 added to their death toll in one night and NY 2000 because "adjusting numbers". What I take that as is if someone died of ANY cause and tests positive for COVID..it is now a COVID related death. that is dishonest at best.

I get your point Mike but at the same time, if someone tests positive for it, I think it is really tough to rule it out as a contributing factor. At the same time, if someone doesn't test positive for but died in an area where COVID-19 is having a significant impact on the healthcare providing community, that too seems like a contributing factor. It has been noted that lots of the victims in Italy died, not because they had COVID-19 but because overwhelmed medical services didn't have the bandwidth to save them as would have been possible under normal circumstances.

I'd also mention that my Dad's official certificate of death listed 3 different causes of death. The IT guy in me rebelled over that, looking for an RCA that was definitive. In the end though, he was nearly 89 and had a lot wrong.

Lets not steer the conversation in this direction again. Believe the numbers or don't. Accept that numbers are changing because it's a chaotic, fluid, ever-changing environment, or not. Everyone can make their own judgment as they see fit.

OK, didn't mean to open a bad can of worms.

Im probably too close to this topic to be fair and objective so I’m going to bow out of the convo.

Not in response to you brother, just have strong feelings on the topic and I’ll end up trying to shove them down folks throats... not something I want to do.

I think you need to also be able to express your frustrations and feelings about it like anyone else. We are ALL in our feelings in one form or another. Not that I want you to yell at me, but if that is what you need....

There are two huge reasons for the mass confusion and information changing daily with this. For one, this is new, we are literally learning as we go every day. Because of that, information and what is or isn't known or recommended is going to change constantly. It doesn't necessarily mean that when something is adjusted that they were wrong or jumping to conclusions, it just means they were making statement based on what little they knew at the time. The second problem is that for everyone taking this seriously, there is someone downplaying it to the point of making things up, or parroting what they heard bits and pieces of. They're spreading speculation and nefarious theories as absolute fact, but offer no evidence to back it. Hit and run posts like this have been very common in the comments section of many news articles these past few weeks. That's problematic due to the fact that a lot of people believe everything they read online, so they spread the information to their friends and family, and it spirals from there.

We learn something new every day about this, and it will continue to be that way for a while. One thing really bothering me now, is every single news app I look at is flooded with covid-19 articles. Many of them completely contradict each other. The articles from reputable sources are mixed among articles from bs sources, and a lot of these apps even allow users to post content, so it's become the wild west. So now not only do people have to sort through the mess, they have to decide how they'll determine who they can trust for accurate reporting. And if someone has already filled their head with bogus information, they'll be hard to convince otherwise.

Two things I know to be true are that a lot of cases are still being reported, and a lot of people are still dying. Until that drastically changes, I'll follow the guidelines no matter how ridiculous they might seem, because to me my life is worth more than my ability to go play with my friends and buy shit I could probably do without anyway. But that's just my opinion. The entire world has gone virtual/digital. You don't need to meet in person or go in person to do things anymore. In the 80s/90s, that was our only choice. Now because of technology, it's become an option. None of us is truly isolated anymore, even if we feel like we are. I can hang out with my friend by pulling up skype. I don't have to go out to eat, it can come to me. I don't have to go to the movies, I have streaming services. Nobody is going to die from staying inside and practicing a little patience for a while.

My understanding has been that when they bill medicare, hospitals can get up to $13,000 per case. And if the patient was on a ventilator before they died, they can get up to $39,000 per case.

Sad, but this is not just a health issue. And, it's getting worse by the day, IMHO.

I fully expect my mothers cause of death on her certificate to show up as China Virus. Not pneumonia. Which was the cause.

We're voluntarily committing economic suicide folks. With the bailouts so far, and the many that are most assuredly coming down the pike, we're gonna leave a bill due, that our great, great grandchildren will never be able to pay off.

China may damn well have intentionally let this devil of nature run wild to start things off. But in the end, I fear most of the damage, when all areas of damage are included, that much of it we will have inflicted on ourselves.

DeWine just got on his meeting and said Ohio is going to start opening businesses slowly May 1.

Wisconsin just said May 26.

NYC is going to require masks until 2021?

Guys, let me echo what Boone said several days ago - please don't drag this into the political realm. We know from experience that those conversations don't go over well here and just lead to issues. In short, we closed the Political Atrium for a reason.

This thread is reporting/discussing our daily experiences with the virus and the response to the virus. Please stick to that and leave the politics to forums that are dedicated to it.

Uncle Fester has now made wearing a mask, or at least something that looks like a mask, mandatory, while shopping in retail stores in the shithole known as Maryland.
Oh goody.

It's been like that in VA for a while. Not mandated, just most stores have put up signs letting you know you aren't coming in without one.

OH just said school year is canceled an they will speak about the Fall coming soon. They are discussing blended learning.

yet, they are going to start opening the state in 1 week.

Interesting. I'm sure we'll be going over the final data for years to come. I wouldn't blindly accept, or reject any parts of this guys analysis, so far.
Time will tell.

Ohio has started the process of opening.
small businesses now
restaurants mid next week.

Dewine has stated that he is hoping to be open by Memorial Day.
