Skins Trade for Panthers QB Kyle Allen

To be fair, you brought up the possibility of QB drama, not me. I simply responded by noting that two young guys on rookie contracts tend to attract plenty of drama. Especially in this town.

My bottom line is I don't like spending the pick. I hope Allen's knowledge of the offense is worth it, because ... looking at the team optimistically ... this kid will never see the field. So that's a 5th rounder for someone who never plays.

I hope you're right. I didn't watch the kid beyond his game with the Redskins. And he looked terrible. Shrug.
But Henry, I think you're missing the point that everyone who knows much about this team has suggested one of our late round picks was slated for a rookie QB.

Instead of having a QB with no NFL experience for that late round pick, why not spend it on a QB with starting experience in the nfl, who actually looked good in some of his starts, who knows this offense?

Who's to say Allen might not beat out Haskins? I invite everyone to take a long look at the history of OSU qbs in the league. Maybe Haskins is the exception.

Yea he would be since he played in a more traditional drop back role than the typical option QB's OSU has churned out for years. He was laser accurate and has a fantastic arm and long ball. The kid has the tools, the question is can the Skins take his game to the next level? We saw signs at the end of last season that it was indeed possible. The least he deserves is a chance with a coaching staff that's competent.

I absolutely agree. Haskins is very talented. I really feel like whether or not he becomes the QB the Redskins thought he could be when they spent a 1st rounder on him is going to be determined by what’s upstairs and how much he matures over the next few years. Physically, he has all the tools and one of the strongest arms in the NFL currently.

And on a side note, I don’t buy for one minute that Snyder made this pick. I’m not naive enough to think he didn’t let his opinion be known, or perhaps there was debate about which guy to take at pick 15 (which is probably not a bad thing), but I can’t imagine Kyle Smith standing by while a selection he thought was a disastrous mistake was made.

He has the physical tools, but he has yet to prove he can stand the rigors of a 16 game NFL season. He appears, to me, to have a fragile ego. Unless he gets past that, the physical tools mean nothing.

It's not on the redskins to take his game to the next level, it's on him...it's on the Skins to provide the platform for him to elevate his game.

That's an interesting take, El. Do you not think coaching is part of an NFL QB's development--that it's all on him?

I think as Redskins fans we have so much PTSD with failed QBs that we don’t realize this is true for every QB that comes into the league. Very rarely is a QB drafted that didn’t show the skills necessary to compete in the NFL. It always comes down to if they can pick up the NFL and adapt. The ones that fail will fail for different reasons, but usually due to not getting it either on or off the field. We have just seen it so often and have not really seen a franchise QB drafted that we don’t realize this is true across the league.

Also, I agree on the Snyder/Haskins pick. It’s not that Snyder didn’t want him, because I believe that part. But I always thought it was lazy to just say that Snyder made that pick because his kid knew him in high school. Haskins was projected as the 2nd or 3rd QB to be drafted last year. Even the Giants fans and media were shocked when the Giants took Jones over Haskins. I think most people were shocked when the Broncos passed on him. But Elway’s track record with picking QBs has been awful so I wouldn’t read into that. When Haskins fell to the Redskins at 15, it was a very reasonable and perhaps even the safe pick. Which has not fit Snyder’s MO during his time owning the team. Had they traded up to draft Haskins, as BJ Russini was reporting the day of the draft, then you can most assuredly believe that Snyder was dictating they draft him no matter what. But as I said, taking him at that spot was the reasonable pick no matter who made it.

Now it’s up to the team to develop him and for Haskins to take the next step to make this work.

I’m on record as having some concerns about his maturity. But I don’t know him and none of us do so I’d personally slow my roll on being too hard on him. We were all stupid at his age and most of us managed to overcome our youth and stupidity to make something of ourselves.

This is some really good stuff from a recent interview with Rivera. He explains ‘why Kyle Allen’ and also confirms Haskins is the presumed starter with Allen providing healthy competition (for those worrying about it).

John, you can discount the idea that Haskins is not level headed all you want, I think he has clearly displayed his ego needs stroked. It's why he posts so many videos of himself working out. He wants the affirmation from his fans.

How this plays out on the field over the next fews years remains to be seen. But he hasn't shown any videos of him studying film ofScott Turner's offense!

I am hopeful that he matures as well.
But I have my concerns.
Because I have never, ever seen a player miss out on a snap, because he was taking selfies with a fan.
Yea, maybe he never does THAT again, but does the maturity issue still pop up in other ways ?

I just acknowledged that I have doubts about his maturity. I stated ‘we don’t know him’ and we don’t. We’ve had this conversation before and you know what I’m going to say - it relates to where WE were at his age - so I’ll spare you.

Here’s my harsh take. You like to stake out a contrarian position (in this case, Haskins is too selfish and ego driven to succeed) so that, should it prove true, you can remind us how you knew all along but no one would listen :)

I'm not the wordsmith you are, so since you question what I thought was properly expressed in my message, I will ask if this statement suggests the team has a responsibility in his development?

It's not on the redskins to take his game to the next level, it's on him...it's on the Skins to provide the platform for him to elevate his game.

If not let me be clearer...it's called personal responsibility. The Redskins are responsible for putting the pieces in place for him to succeed, a RB who can churn off yardage when it is most needed, an OL who can give him time to perfect a play, a coach who creates the right system to provide an opportunity for the young QB to "take his game to the next level. They cannot go out and perform for him...he bears responsibility to elevate his game.

I told you so!

Wordsmithery has nothing to do with answering a direct question. Let me illustrate:

Yes. Yes they do. As does the player.

Then why not say, I disagree? Then support your assertion.

Here is my assertion...the Skins cannot make him more mature, mature enough to study the playbook and spend time in the areas of his game that need the most attention, instead of showing everyone how physically gifted he is on twitter...those things that will elevate his game.

They can only provide the stage, script, and the set. He is the one who has to act the part.

Brian, this is what you said that I asked about:

It's not on the redskins to take his game to the next level, it's on him...it's on the Skins to provide the platform for him to elevate his game.

I read "his game" to refer to his overall development as a player--including footwork, reading pro defenses, calling protections, the gamut. That's why I asked what I asked. I have never heard anyone suggest that that development was strictly on the player. If you were talking only about his maturity, then we're talking past each other and we don't disagree. Were you?

By all accounts Haskins has done nothing BUT live at the Park until recently and aggressively prepare for the 2020 season. Basing an assessment on a couple Twitter posts instead of what might actually be going on is lame. There are assertions and then there are ASSertions :). You almost sound like you hope you’re right.

I wrote a blog entry late last season that acknowledged some concerns but I saw some growth as the year closed out and I think he’s listening to the coaches and trainers now. You say he putshis latest workouts on Twitter for ego gratification. Quite possible he’s trying to reassure folks and demonstrate that he is working his ass off. What’s wrong with that?

I'm so confused! When the games begin I won't know if I am cheering the Skins or booing the Panthers! What's the theory in play here? Take a 3-13 team, a 5-11 team, mix em up to get a winning team?

Eh. At this point I assume the reality is they don't have many options and are working with the hand that was dealt. I see some are rating young Chase the best prospect in the draft. It would be fun watching him play for the Skins if he is as good as predicted. Looking forward to the draft......hope these moves don't foretell a trade-down.
