The Trent Williams question

I would love for you to be right but I’m skeptical. If they were offered a 1st it would be insane not to jump at that.

Totally a gamble. but, at this point, what is there to lose? we aren't even at the draft yet...Ask for the moon!!

There may well be a fool out there who would offer a 1st for a formerly/hopefully still talented OT who is 32, often injured, and one blunt away from serious penalties...

and that is exactly what it would take.

No one is sacred on a 3-13 team, least of all a player on the wrong side of 30 who can't stay healthy for an entire season who sat out for a year and is one puff-puff-give away from missing a second.

if yall want to aim low and end up with less than you could get, cool. we could get a 1st for him, and a good negotiator could probably get us a 1st and a future for him. just because we are in a "rebuild" doesn't mean we need to take whatever we are given.

Nobody said aim low. You get what you get. If we get a 1st that would be fantastic. I don't think it will happen but I wouldn't say no. :)

I think we blew our chances for a 1st when we held onto him all season long, and there were rumors of a team or two maybe going that high for him. Teams are desperate during the season when options are low. That's when we had a shot at a 1st. In the offseason, with the draft coming up ... I seriously doubt we get that lucky. I doubt anyone will offer more than a 3rd at this point. The guy is old, cranky and expensive.

I know there were rumors of a 1st round offer but I also remember teams denying that. Not sure that’s a fact. I’m suspicious of it being a fact because it was put out there as further evidence of Bruce Allen’s incompetence and folks would seize on anything if it supported that viewpoint.

It was the Browns. That was a very valid offer and they tried to keep it going as long as they could. Bruce did him dirty on that one.

They also just lost an OL (free agency) who is now facing 20 years in prison. The Browns are as desperate now as they were then for OL. An "old, cranky, expensive" OL might just be what they go for.

There are 2 ideas floating around right now that just don't add up...one is the Trent Williams could net us a 1st round pick. Last year when Cleveland and Houston were desperate, we might and probably would have gotten a 1st round pick for him. At this point, we'd be lucky with a 2nd. The only way we'd be lucky enough to get a 1st round pick for him is if we held onto him until pre-season when a team got desperate enough. That just isn't going to happen...if we do move on, it will be long before then.

That brings up the second idea...while this draft is deep in LT's, there is no way a 2nd round rookie comes in and performs better than TW. He was off a full season, so the injury bug doesn't concern me. Otherwise he is still among the best LT's in the NFL. We don't have a lot of draft equity, so if we relied on the draft we'd need to draft a 3rd round rookie, or worse...trade draft picks to move up.

We could sign one in FA? I took a gander to see who is available in free agency. While there are a couple of solid RT's out there, Conklin from TN, and Ifeldi from Seattle, there is not a single LT in FA better than Trent Williams.
None.

Whatever we do, LT is the single most important position of need, and we have a damned good one under contract. Let's figure something out to make all sides happy until we can move on in 2 years when we'll absolutely need one. Like Bulldog said, the Eagles stuck with Peters, just like the Rams stuck with a 38 year old Whitworth, because good LT's are hard to find. Trent is still more talented than either of them.

This is absolutely true, but they have the draft capital to replace their LT with a glut in the LT market this draft. At the number 10 they will likely be able to land Tristan Wirfs from Iowa.

They do...but, word is the Vagiants want him as well. I am not sure how burned the bridge is between our two teams, but we do play them this year in Cleveland so it could be VERY interesting.

For me it's simple...we can't afford to lose another QB. With so many questions on the O line ya bring back the one guy who's going to protect and lock down the QB's backside. Next year when other holes have been filled, maybe but not this year. Shore up and protect the QB while we rebuild. Does us no good whatsoever if our QB is killed during said rebuild.

As for the guff TW's taking from folks like Boone...I'm pretty meh on that considering how much of a clusterfudge the previous regime was. At some point ya gotta look out for #1. If many lifelong diehards finally quit on this team it's not too shocking that a guy whose livelihood actually depends on them would do so as well. He knows the dysfunction better than any of us.

If I am rebuilding I trade Trent and Scherff.

I start the 23 year old Martin at one guard spot and resign the 26 year old Flowers to be the other guard.

If I am looking to make a one year bounce back to try and be a wildcard contender I resign Trent and do what I can to keep Scherff for 2020, including using the franchise tag.

That’s reasonable. If we can figure it out with h that would be ok, too.

I do think if someone offered a pick as high as a 2nd we should take it. If he wants to hold out for even more money, he hasn’t taken the field in a year and who knows what kind of shape he’s in, he’s not the happiest camper in DC ... there’s a LOT of baggage there. A pick that high would give us the best chance to cut our losses with him, and considering we are rebuilding anyway, we have time to develop a LT before we have to worry about contending anyway.

Having Trent Williams at LT never won us a playoff game. It never kept our QBs from getting sacked or even from getting injured. LT is important, but all of the 'you have to have a great LT to be successful' stuff is way overblown. Is it the most important position on the OL? Maybe. Or maybe not. He's old. He sat and watched his team get crushed over and over for a year. He told half-truths through surrogates to gain sympathy. And he wants big money after already getting big money. I wouldn't blink an eye if they traded him. Good luck at your next stop.

We've won games without him.

So tired of Trent this,Trent that. Find someone who actually wants to be here.

Btw, and more importantly - Knightingale - it's good to see you. Thought you'd disappeared on us!

Thats just it, we're limited with who we can get. Not enough draft picks and there are no better LT's out there. Were not talking about a bank buster extension. Just give the cat a modest extension, ride him wet and put him out to pasture in 2 years as we build other areas of need.

For the record, if Rivera decides holding onto Trent is the expedient thing to do for now, I'm fine with it. I just wouldn't shed a tear if they sent his ass packing.

And this is where I stand. I just happen to think it would be foolish to let the best option we have at LT, walk out the door for a couple dollars we can afford at this point. It gives us some time to build other areas of need like RT, CB, WR, RB, S, LB...

I really can't believe we're minimizing his worth as an LT. At 32 with a year off, one of the best in the game 2 year ago will probably remain one of the best in the game. We have a lot of cap space over the next 2 years, just give him a reasonable contract extension that favors us getting rid of him after 2 seasons...let's fill holes at RT (Ifeldi or Conklin), CB (Bradberry or Dennard), WR (Diggs, Green or Anderson), and with FA this year.

And I wouldn't be upset if we chose another T in round 3 or 4. I doubt Geron Christian will be on the roster this season...we gonna depend on Moses for anything more than a backup anymore? I'd release him altogether.

Considering all the drama surrounding Trent a year ago, I am hoping that we part ways with him. He likely has another year or two of good football left in the tank and I do not see the team competing for championships in that window. To me, now is the time to acquire draft capital and let this team grow together. Rivera is under no pressure to win in year 1 in my estimation. It's all about cleansing the organization, and lets not kid ourselves into believing that Trent has not done his fair share in terms of leaving some stains on it.

So who do you start at LT? The best you'll get for TW is a 2nd...while the T market is deep in the draft this season, I doubt we'll get someone from college to come in and start right away with a 2nd round pick.

So what...free agency? I've researched that position to see who is available. Not one single player is in the same class in terms of talent as TW. Donald Penn was serviceable last year, wanna depend on him at 37 yrs old for one more season?

Trent Williams is the single best option we have, outside of a trade down with Miami.

If we do manage a trade, then we can address the OT position with one of the 5 slated to go in the 1st round, Andre Thomas or Jedrick Wills at the #5 pick instead of 2 players that are better at their positions, or if we get Miami's #17 pick hope that Tristan Wirfs or Mekhi Becton are still there, or take Austin Jackson.

The closer we get to draft day/FA the more it looks like we are going to take Chase Young at #2. If that's the case, you tell me who is a better option at LT than TW this season.
