Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

Here is a weekend update as free agency is on our front doorstep.

There are a few rumblings about a Trent Murphy for Kam Chancellor trade being in the works. BBQ doesn’t think that will happen, but can’t rule it completely out.

BBQ does believe that Trent Murphy being traded soon is possible. It’s difficult to know if it would be for another player or a draft pick. The odds in our estimation are around one in three.

The Redskins have tendered three players – Chris Thompson, Will Compton, and Tress Way. All three will return as these are EFRAs.

It’s looking as if Terrance Knighton will not return.

Junior Galette reports that his achilles is at about 85% recovered. He continues a vigorous workout schedule.

The first right of refusal all but guarantees that Galette returns to the Redskins.

A few rumors have surfaced about a Robert Griffin for Nick Foles trade and both QBs would restructure their contracts. These are just rumors and nothing more.

Is Ben Jones (Houston Texans center) a target in free agency? Some in the Redskins media think it is possible.

The same sources say that Jacksonville Jaguars DE Andre Branch could be a possible target as well.

The Redskins will probably not pursue a cornerback in free agency.

Parking at FedEx this coming season will now cost $50 per vehicle at each game.

I can understand why the Redskins want to sign Galette to multi-year deal at a bargain price coming off the ACL injury. But for a veteran who has posted double digit sacks in the past, that's not realistic.

He's willing to sign a team-friendly one year 'make good' deal and I think that's the way to go for 2016.

Galette didn't do his ACL at all. He snapped an achilles.
 
Correct me if wrong, but hasn't DeAngelo Hall already restructured twice, as a CB, before being moved to S? I've think he may have restructured to the max and thus, there is no more room for him to restructure again.

I read an article from Tandler this morning that says while the Redskins want McCoy back, he believes he is good enough to start elsewhere.

I'm not sure how that will work out for him, but if successful, it would suggest that we will be in the market for 2 QBs this offseason. Likely one in FA, and one through the draft.

The FA list of QBs is ugly. Tandler mentioned Matt Schaub. No thank you. Nick Foles looks pretty good in that context, although Foles probably also believes he's a starter.
 
Colt McCoy is dreaming if he thinks he is going to score a starter's contract in free agency.

What he has shown is he is a competitive player that knows the playbook and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. That's the classic definition of a competent backup.

He doesn't have the arm strength or accuracy to be a guy that consistently makes plays on the field.

He's fine for 2-3 games holding down the fort but 16 weeks of McCoy will prove problematic for an offense.

The offseason is continuing to churn along now as teams are fully immersed with retooling their rosters by releasing players, restructuring contracts, offering new deals, placing franchise and transition tags, looking at free agency, and planning for the draft. BBQ takes the latest look at free agency and there are more scenarios to consider. This will also be the final update before FA begins on Wednesday afternoon. The official start of the new NFL season arrives in two days and teams are now allowed to contact agents as of today. We will have FA updates periodically, but start to give more focus to the upcoming draft after FA settles down in the coming days.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days and weeks. Who will the Redskins target, re-sign, release, and tender? Several changes have been made for this week and are reflected in the listings.

We have made changes to the statuses of Mason Foster, Colt McCoy, Will Blackmon, Pierre Garcon, and Tom Compton. Other players above have their situations mentioned, but no other insight is known at this time.

We have made changes at running back, defensive end, and wide receiver. Obviously the Redskins can’t sign each player, but we think that one two very good free agents could be on the table. In fact, BBQ has learned that a certain defensive tackle interests the Redskins – strongly. The same is true for a young free safety. Chris Long will be visiting the Redskins on Tuesday. C.J. Anderson was offered the lowest tender possible by the Broncos and would require no compensation – a surprise.

We are going to need to sign a DT as Knighton is unlikely to be re-signed (has tweeted he won't be re-signed) and Jason Hatcher has been released. Although Hatcher is a DE, he has the size of a DT. We need someone with experience to anchor the D-line.

Safety is another problem as Goldson and Johnson have been released, and Ihenacho has been on IR early in each of the last two years. DeAngelo has been moved to safety, so we also need an experienced safety (but not necessarily an experienced player).
 
Culliver is coming back from major surgery and the team doesn't have anyone to run with Breeland if Chris is not 100%.

So, I would elevate the need for a cornerback in the draft unless the team is able to sign a free agent that can come in and settle things down.

We are one day away from the official start of free agency. Here is a brief update for you.

The trade to get Kam Chancellor in a Redskins uniform is simply not going to happen. One Redskins beat reporter claims that it could happen, but every other media pundit says absolutely not. BBQ agrees with the vast majority.

Colt McCoy will briefly test the market, but the Redskins are optimistic about his return.

The Redskins are looking to re-sign Mason Foster very soon and if they do, it likely spells the end of Perry Riley in a team uniform.

Due to a lack of blocking tight ends in the free agency market and a limited number for the draft, the Redskins could bring Logan Paulsen back. The odds are now 50-50.

Junior Galette has hired super agent Drew Rosenhaus and is now able to start negotiations on a new contract.

Definitely not returning are Darrel Young, Terrance Knighton, Alfred Morris, Carey Williams, Keenan Robinson, Pierre Thomas, Alex Smith and Frank Kearse.

BBQ understands that some of those choices are not popular. However, we need to keep in mind that the best teams do not keep players for sentimental reasons. They move on and move forward.

The Redskins are hoping to re-sign Will Blackmon. Look for a deal to get completed in the coming days.

Could Josh LeRibeus return? It’s not out of the question. If the Redskins can’t find a suitable replacement at center via the draft or free agency, he could be re-signed. The Redskins probably do find such a player, but it is not 100% written in stone.

Chris Cooley added his poison to Massacre Monday yesterday. In a radio interview, he unloaded on RG3. CC47 said that none of the OL liked him. Ditto for the WRs. Ditto for much of the team. He claims that RG3 hated Kirk Cousins from the moment the Michigan St. product was selected. Massacre Monday indeed.

BBQ sided with Niles Paul on this issue earlier today. He had a short and vulgar response to Chris Cooley. There is a code in the locker room – what happens there, stays there. It was that way in high school football and I know it is the same today at all levels. In the business world it is “we keep this in house”.

Scot McCloughan on drafting players: "We need guys that understand it’s about the Redskins, not themselves. You're going to be in or out".

Will Kedric Golston return? Do the Redskins value his leadership role with the team? All of this is unknown, but the front office likes him. Do they like him enough to return on a new contract? Stay tuned.

Former GM Charley Casserly says that the Redskins could be looking at Chris Long for his leadership skills in the locker room.

LaVar Arrington believes that Janoris Jenkins and/or Reggie Nelson could be targets in FA for the Redskins.
 
I could see Reggie Nelson going to Vikings to reunite with Zimmer.

Question for you, BB. What is the relationship between Rosenhaus and Redskins FO? I know at one time there was a good working relationship.
