Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

We have added Vernon Butler of Louisiana Tech to the prospects list of players contacted by the Redskins. More names are likely to surface tonight and will be posted tomorrow.
Lequon Treadwell “underperformed” at bit at the combine. That was expected as he is a football player (the kind Scot McCloughan likes) and not a track and field stud. He could fall to the 21st overall pick and the Redskins would likely snap him up quickly.
Kirk Cousins was initially offered a contract of around $12.5M a year, then $15M. His agent wants just over $19M a year. A deal in the $16M to 17M likely gets done at some point. All of this is just normal posturing from both sides.

Two things...
1. Not being able to run hasn't kept Brady, Manning, etc... from playing football. Granted, Griffin will have to learn to play from the pocket, which I believe he can. Don't know if he will. But the notion that his career is over because he's not THAT fast anymore, seems absurd.
2. If it's true that he tore the ligament in the Ravens game, then Dr. Andrews and Mike Shamahan should be in prison. And the Washington Redskins should be disbanded, and eliminated from the NFL. Forever.

Hard to know Tom. I think the bigger issue is, if a torn knee ligament was missed, on ANYONE, and you know there had to be an MRI done, then the doctor in charge should lose his license, forever, and go to jail. And the team should be held responsible as an accomplice to the negligence.

I have a feeling there must be more to the Griffin story. There has been reports about his lack of respect in the locker room. There has been reports about him having a hard time learning to be a pocket passer and playing under center. Chances are there are things we don't and won't know that make up much of his story.

The Redskins would be willing to take a seventh rounder for Robert Griffin (as has been mentioned here), but that is not realistic. As stated yesterday, some teams think his career is over due to injuries.
New England may take a look at Chris Ivory, Joique Bell, Alfred Morris, and Matt Forte when FA opens.
With the 2016 draft extremely deep with defensive linemen, could the Redskins score a huge bargain in FA and get some quality in the draft as well? The numbers really favor the Burgundy and Gold.
Jaylon Smith (can’t miss OLB prospect from Notre Dame) may not be selected in the draft. The nerve damage to his knee, foot, and leg is that serious. Every team has confirmed their concerns.
On the flip side, teams have been impressed with Smith’s attitude. He is vowing to do whatever it takes to make a comeback.
DE Chris Jones of Mississippi St. has impressed at the combine. Could he join his former teammate (Preston Smith) in the NFL? It’s possible.
BBQ will now take Antwaun Woods off the table (we mocked him with the second of two seventh round picks) and leave him on the watch list for remaining mocks. He suffered what could be a serious pectoral injury yesterday.
The franchise/transition tag deadline is tomorrow at 4pm EDT.
Look for Robert Griffin to be released sometime tomorrow if a tag is used on Kirk Cousins.
NFL competition committee will consider making the chop block illegal this offseason. If that happens, the running game for all teams will greatly suffer.

I suspect the Griffin camp would have made a lot more noise about malpractice if he actually was misdiagnosed.
Remember how Griff was incensed about not playing the Browns. Yep, his fuss could have been based on bad diagnosis but what I recall was a sprain that could be stabilized by the brace, team wanted him to rest it he wanted to play on it.
Don't forget that tweak he had against Seattle.... the one where he asks Trent not to say anything, that one is the one I think led to the total collapse of the joint but he insisted on playing on and for whatever reason Shanny let him do it.
Also, this time of year the rumor/opinion mills are at max production.... who wants to pay a guy that much with THIS problem.

I think that to develop a championship level team, character counts as much as talent. I'd have no problem selecting a crop of players that are commended as much for their attitude and approach to football as they are for their play.
Butler seems like the type of guy that would fit the McCloughan mold - big, passionate about the game, wants to be the best, quality character.

The situation for Alfred Morris became interesting again when Jay Gruden mentioned (at the combine) that the team is still evaluating what may happen. Could the popular running back return?
We have decided to include very good football players on the free agent list from other teams only. It is almost impossible to know who of the “lesser” players could be targeted, so no attempts will be made unless media chatter dictates otherwise. Obviously the Redskins can’t sign each player, but we think that one two very good free agents could be on the table. In fact, BBQ has learned that a certain defensive tackle interests the Redskins – strongly. The same is true for a young free safety.
We’ll update the free agency situations frequently and as media chatter warrants. Give us your thoughts on free agency and what you think will happen.

I can understand why the Redskins want to sign Galette to multi-year deal at a bargain price coming off the ACL injury. But for a veteran who has posted double digit sacks in the past, that's not realistic.
He's willing to sign a team-friendly one year 'make good' deal and I think that's the way to go for 2016.
We really don't know what the upside to Preston Smith is at this point. If he continues to develop into an upper echelon player, the team may only need Galette as a bridge for the next year or so, and that would fit in with his testing the free agent market in 2017.
Meanwhile, I am in full agreement with finding a NT-DT anchor with the first pick and continuing to draft defense in a year where the talent volume seems to be on that side of the ball.

Lamar Miller is unfortunately looking like more and more of a long shot. While he may not be the biggest RB name in FA, it seems teams are now recognizing his talent.

Agreed on not overspending on RB's. It's not like back in day. If you've put your team together right--meaning you can defend, have a legitimate NFL QB, a solid OL, a balanced offensive scheme and decent pass-catchers, you can win Super Bowls without an elite back.
Yes, we had one in Riggins for the first title, but once the Gibbs/Beathard machine got rolling and all the pieces were in place, we contended for and won titles with just guys at RB. An old George Rogers and rookie Timmy Smith ... Brian Mitchell ... Keith Griffin ... Jamie Morris ... Earnest Byner and rookie Ricky Ervins.
I'll be surprised if we spend any significant FA dollars on a back any time soon. I don't think that's Scot's vision.

Yes, we had one in Riggins for the first title, but once the Gibbs/Beathard machine got rolling and all the pieces were in place, we contended for and won titles with just guys at RB. An old George Rogers and rookie Timmy Smith ... Brian Mitchell ... Keith Griffin ... Jamie Morris ... Earnest Byner and rookie Ricky Ervins.
I'll be surprised if we spend any significant FA dollars on a back any time soon. I don't think that's Scot's vision.
