ESPN: Shanahan was ready to quit in '12

You weren't talking to me but since I seem to be on the same page as Mike I'll answer....

Nope not the same at all since it seems to me that Mike and I are waiting for some actual evidence backing up this hysteria about meddling and buddying up before we buy into it. It's not at all the same as being dug in beyond the point of reason and unwilling to listen to any facts that counter our stance. BIG difference IMO.

If we're being open and honest here I have to confess I lean towards Ax's sentiments about the fickle clueless nature of some of our fans and this being basically a case study in why many other NFL fans think Redskins fans are as clueless and ungrounded as Cowboy fans. If I didn't know better I'd think Griffin never had the season he had last year where he demonstrated an ability to do all the things he's accused of being mentally unable to this year. Two words for me right now bring HUGE confort because of the amazing number of parallels in their 2nd years...Cam Newton.

If you still need to see the fire and don't trust the smoke after 15 years of total mismanagement and dysfunction, then you may never change your opinion of Snyder. I am of the opinion that a normal person would have learned their lesson after a couple years, not 15. And I don't think Dan is slow, he's a billionaire, he's obviously made some correct choices in his career. He just doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes in this particular venue.

I was thinking that too.

All he really had to do was come out and say 'Shanahan is our guy. he makes the final decisions and I support that 100%' or something. Since he's not saying that we're all trying to guess what he's thinking, or doing, or whatever. And given his track record all sorts of ideas are popping up. Makes things look pretty toxic.

What if the only thing straining their relationship is Snyder wanting to make a statement to clear everything up and Shanahan saying no (and having the power, contractually, to stop him)?

I can really only think of one NFL owner that feels the need to address the media. At all. For anything.

And that owner is also his team's GM.

Considering this ENTIRE incident is based on unsubstantiated un-sourced rumors that were supposedly leaked, yea I'm going to need more than "a feeling" the butt hurt fans have that he might be resorting back to behavior he has shown for over 4 years he stopped. I get the mistrust, but I also have seen enough absolutely blatant attempts to mislead and misinform (don't even get me started on LaConfora and Wise and Jenkins) to trust what the media says without corroboration a hell of a lot less. I just don't chow down on whatever these mediots try to feed me...I pay attention before I freak out. Others....not so much. Sometimes it's a symptom of youth but a lot of times it's just how some folks work.

CT, I can't speak for the hordes of youthful panicky fans, but for me personally 3-10 and our young phenom getting mysteriously benched is enough to get me wondering what the hell is going on over there. In one respect you and Mike and Ax are correct. None of this other crap matters. Wins matter.

We have three.

That's unacceptable. And the man ultimately responsible for this terrible performance is, like it or not, Dan Snyder.

Oh I have the same "WTF?" sentiments as well, but actually marrying those to things like "Snyder MUST be meddling and this rumor confirms it" are way beyond what's reasonable or rational IMO. And no you can't place the blame for this current situation on the guy who has by all appearances moved out and handed the keys to the joint to someone else, not if you're going to try and figure out on a specific level what's wrong. That credit goes to the guy actually running things. Even if Snyder is playing buddy buddy it doesn't explain at all the state of this team in almost all phases. It wasn't this bad when we know Snyder WAS a meddling prick (Norv), I can't believe that his behaviour -that by all accounts is night and day compared to 1999- is at the root here. It's actual people Shanahan has brought in to coach...for lack of a more concise word they suck.

Again CT, my problem isn't that I think Snyder is doing this or that or the other little thing. I don't know any of that.

My problem is that he hires one of two types of coach:

1) A young prospect, who he promptly runs all over
2) An Established Name, to whom he relinquishes TOTAL control of all coaching and personnel decisions

What I'm hearing from some of you is that Snyder's cool now because we're in the #2 mode at the moment, as if that's never been tried and failed here before. My problem isn't 'what is he doing,' it's 'what is he going to do?' He doesn't have a way of operating outside of those two, and neither one works. I'm not suddenly making this up now. Years ago I expressed concern that our 'GM' was only hired at Shanahan's behest, and that Allen wasn't in a position to provide any sort of counter to Shanahan whatsoever. And I think we are now seeing why that's a problem.

What do we do now? I don't know, because neither one of those two options work and those are the only two options we have.

Because that's how Dan Snyder operates.

I hear ya Henry but given the situation at the time (coming off of Zorn who couldn't possibly have been in more over his head), what exactly was Snyder supposed to do? Candidates weren't beating down the door and MOST people were pretty happy with a coach of SHanny's background taking over completely. He did do a good job of purging the turds but he never was able to improve the team after that. Last year looks like an exception not a beginning trend. I also would take issue with Gibbs tenure being a failure. It was anything but to me. SB is not required for me to call it a successful season.

I'm also not sure what the exact timeline was with respect to Allen and Shanny hires. I've read that it was Allen who wasn't convinced Shanny was the right guy, which would suggest Allen was here before Shanny was...more media rumor crap so who knows. I do think Snyder has built enough credibility for staying out of things that he CAN hire a quality GM now who will hopefully make a good choice and hire someone that will do what Shanahan should have with this team. This is no playoff team but it's got a lot more talent than we've seen most of this season...crappy secondary and O line aside.

Why weren't candidates beating down the door?

Rumors or no, do you think candidates will be beating down the door now?

Uggh this is like Here we go round the Mullberry bush...

Because up to THAT point he was guilty of all the things he's being accused of. Since then...nada. So no the history isn't forgotten but if you change and create a 4 year track record of said change then yes you get credit for it. That's generally how society works from my experience. If a KKK Grand Dragon can mend his ways and wind up being someone who blacks actually look to as a leader, then a meddling, micromanaging douchebag can stop acting like a douche and see the err of his ways in terms of how it's affecting his business. I don't know why that is so far fetched for some folks.

CT,

Sorry this won't seem fair, but a turnaround in this business is a championship, a playoff team, a team that puts up winning, or ok, or mediocre, or non-horrible-train-wreck seasons more often than not. A turnaround is not 3-10, massively underachieving, and mysteriously benching franchise players followed by a big ol' media circus. That's not a turnaround in any way, shape or form. That's not change.

So my question again is, do you think candidates will be beating down our door this time around? And if so, what sort of coach will Snyder hire?

That a simplification of the topic at hand Henry...the owner's meddling ways. I think we have enough credibility in the FO with AJ Smith and Allen, that we'll have a much better time trying to bring in quality people. No Haynesworth, despite the record we have a good base corp to build around on both sides of the ball, our QB situation although not looking sharp now is in GREAT shape for the future IMO. And we have an owner with deep pockets that now has a track record of staying out of the way (no matter how hard Shanny tries to undermine that with leaks of false information). Those are all things that makes this is a very attractive hire. The huge cap space we have is an added bonus, the new coach and GM can go shopping.

Its not a rumor though that he's given Griffin preferential treatment though, is it? Its been confirmed by several players and sources inside the organization. That's enough smoke for me.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. It will also be interesting to see how the Shanahan Regime ends (if it actually does.)

On that contrary, what I've read from players has amounted to "Say What? I've never seen it." So still rumor as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I've never heard it from players or any reliable sources either.

Snyder is clearly the classic example of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. He did what we all wanted this time around. He hired football guys and got the hell out of the way.

The result is a flaming pile of dogshit.

He hired a coach, a coach who had already failed holding the exact same positions for his last team for 7-8 years. He won SB's with an established team that already had a GM then when he felt big enough he took over those duties and played a similar game as Snyderatto at the same time they played it. He was slightly better at it but still won no more Playoff games than Gibbs did in his 4 years but Shanahan failed for over an entire decade. Now he comes here and people act surprised to see the same sort of cluster****.

I was never super Gung Ho on the Hiring of Shanahan but I gotta admit after last year it sure looked good and he did some things I felt were long overdue like purging the turds from the roster and getting the owner out of Redskins Park. So I am, understandably, a bit shell shocked here and more than a little annoyed at how it turned out. Standing back now it all seems so obvious but Shanahan has done a good job of fooling a lot of us until now. I feel duped and pissed but I'm not willing to carry that into full fledged flamethrower mode. I think some people HAVE done the right thing this time, they like me got burned is all. It happened, could happen again if another coach with a great rep comes here and decides to mail it in, but that still won't make Dan the meddler he was before and it won't make NFL owners any more clairvoyant than they have been before. Picking a great coach isn't easy, if it was so many owners wouldn't struggle with it. I don't know this for a fact but I'd be willing to be almost every new owner to this league has gone through some serious growing pains on the way to figuring out how to hire the right coach.
