ESPN: Shanahan was ready to quit in '12

Well I don't spend every waking second consumed with anxiety over whether I'm right or wrong about a situation I have no control over.

I find the manufactured hysteria a welcome distraction.

Mike, he took a step back for Gibbs ... maybe, but went right back to running the asylum once Zorn took the job.

As I've suggested several times before, Snyder may try and hang back when an established football name takes over, but he walks all over coaches he considers lightweights, or inexperienced.

So far we have Schottenheimer fired after a power struggle, Norv, Spurrier and Zorn emasculated and then kicked to the curb, and now this mess with Shanahan. Outside of Gibbs, who is as untouchable as any man alive, this is a very established pattern. Again, I don't presume to know the details, but things are screwed up, again. And at this point do we really need to know more?

snyder ran the team like a fantasy football team early on, but he has smartened up in regards to be ing more hands off but what we really need is a gm who we can trust, who is willing to build the team for the long haul, shanny has never been willing to do that, even his move to grab rg3 was with short term benefit in mind and its set us back 3 seasons imho

This line of thinking doesn't make sense to me Ryman. We delayed progress picking up Griffin - but only in the short term. In fact, picking up a franchise QB, something that almost every championship team possesses in the modern era, was a decision made for the long-term. If you don't think Snyder was 100% behind the move to grab RG3, you are misinformed. That was not just a Shanahan decision. And it was the right one.

The melodramatics in here concerning how we're viewed around the league reads like a teenage girl's diary filled with hysterics over a pimple before the prom.

Highly entertaining.

Either one cares about the Redskins or not. If one does, that's already giving a damn about something that doesn't really matter, so laughing at someone else for caring about something that doesn't really matter is kinda stupid. Coupling that with condescention shows a lack of self awareness that's downright stunning.

This is something I noticed a short time ago when watching Coach Shanahan's presser from this afternoon. Maybe it is picking nits, but it's something that stuck out in my mind.

He was not wearing a Redskins shirt, jacket, sweatshirt, etc. He wasn't wearing Redskins colors at all.

Just an observation.

Was he already sporting the Texans ballcap?

Lol. They've already come out and said they aren't interested in Mike. Now Kyle is still a possibility.

Maybe what they are really saying is that they aren't interested in nepotism, Slowick or Haslett either.

Trading away future first rounders doesn't effect the team long term? Hell, the Rams are about to get their #2 overall that we used back, if not the #1 overall.

The way things look now the Redskins only benefited short term (DIV Champs 2012). The next few years will just get more difficult without those picks. Meanwhile all those picks just had a 2nd ACL, blew the team a year, and now looks like a worse single pick than Tannehill, Foles, and Wilson all of which we could have chosen. Hell, we could have had all 3 and Cousins.

"When I have a coach like Joe Gibbs or Mike Shanahan, I don't have to worry as much" -- Dan Snyder, a few years ago

Heh heh heh.......still feel that way Danny?

Now Snyder may be put to the test.......will we continue to be cursed with retreads for the duration of his ownership, or can we please take our chances with an established coordinator.......and someone who is on our initial list and is not a default like Zorn was.

Best thing would be for Dan to go on a long vacation after the Giants game on the 29th and charge Bruce Allen with finding a coach.

You can't win long term without a franchise QB. He was ROY last year. I know that you all want to panic because he had a bad year, but that's all it is - panic. He cost us major picks that will delay putting a supporting cast around him. The cap penalty exacerbated that fact. But if you all don't get that securing a franchise QB is part if a long term plan, there's no point even replying.

Boone, its not about getting a franchise qb, that isnt why this was a bad move, its about THE ORDER in which you get one. getting a franchise qb before you have an oline to protect him , receivers to help him or a running back to take the pressure off him, is just bad football. I have no doubt snyder was ok with it, ffs the guy is a fantasy football fan but lets be honest here, it was yet another "win more games right away" move.

what we should have done, was spend those first rounders on Olinemen, then lose a few more games 2 seasons ago, repair the defence, and then with the lower pick that a rebuilding team has, use that to move up. instead we threw the dice, way overspent on RG3, didnt protect him, and now we watch as a promising young player has his confidence damaged.

remember David Carr wasnt always a bust, hes just one of the more recent examples of potential ruined by bad oline play.

now we still need an oline, dont have a first rounder, won 3 games and will be lucky to win one more and we dont benefit from it at all. Good job Shannahan.

Who said anything about caring/not caring. We all care. I simply see a lot of the hysteria/hyperbole/paranoia/panic/analysis paralysis to be an overreaction x 10. And personally, I find it entertaining. I guess it's like Snyder bashing, for some.

And for the record, I'm most self aware person in the room. ;)

I'm also tickled by those enamored with what round a guy is drafted in. And how the picks we gave up for Robert has set us back so far.

Hogwash.

Everybody seems to pencil in the picks we traded as being pro bowl starters on their way to the HOF. It's more likely that the 3 picks not used on Robert would have been 1 starter (who's impact was matched by a handful of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounders around the league), 1 good situational player, and 1 bust. Whoopde****indoo.

Meh. If you disagree with something just disagree with it. This "I'm above the fray" act you've got going is about as high school as it gets. And frankly, your fellow fans and board-mates deserve better treatment than that.

Oh it was on Drudge yesterday Henry...this is BIG news for sure.

And tr1 you're playing the same annoying game that the media is and this where Ax's commentary about laziness comes in. Those are all HUGE assumptions you're making based on information at least 4 years old or debunked by reliable sources. I keep waiting for folks like you to pony up some facts to back this hysteria...sorry if that's a label the mods don't like but that's how it comes across when I read this...hysteria. People are literally freaking out over a rumor that reliable, trustworthy people with inside dish have debunked as nonsense.

Whatever floats your boat I guess but don't expect people like me to get on board I just can't buy it this time based on actual evidence. If this preferential treatment and meddling was going on then SOMEONE other than Shanny would have noticed. We all know from past experience that Dan's misdeeds are NEVER swept under the rug. When the collective response to this from players and other personnel is "Say What?"...the story just doesn't wash.

Shanny said that DS's preferential treatment of RGIII has caused dysfunction. Anyone know of another player's parent who is allowed in the dressing room? Do you think Shanny okayed this without being coerced?
1. I've never seen, nor heard, Shanny say that, "DS's preferential treatment of RGIII has caused dysfunction." And I don't give the media any benefit of doubt. Either to the existence of any relationship, or the extent of one that does exist.

2. I heard numerous players, local and nationally, say it doesn't happen often, but it has happened. Keyshaun said Parcells allowed his homies in the locker after games. Much ado about nothing.

3. If this is all it takes to make you have a horrible defense that can't tackle, and special teams that can't do anything, then Shammy's sucktitude is worse than we think.

Where do you think RGIII felt he got the authority at the beginning of the season to say he and the coaches had an 'understanding' as to how he would be used going forward?
Shammy was the first person I heard say that if Robert was ready week 1, he would start.

I'd say DS told Shanahan to make sure nothing serious happens to him. That he IS the franchise qb.
And I'd say Shammy DOES have final say on all things football. And HIS history has shown that he's too goddamn arrogant to not shoot down anything the HE didn't like/want.

Pay attention to the words Shanahan uses...he's doing a straight faced mocking by parroting things he's been told to do. Sitting RGIII for his 'protection' is probably the final slap Shanny will be able to muster.
If it's a slap in the face, it's illogical to have waited this long, since it infers that he's had the power to do so since the preseason.

There's a two decade old pattern continuing to play itself out. That Snyder can't even address the press, except through nameless spokesmen, tells me the guy is a jerk. But, in the NFL, owners, and especially Snyder, scatter like cockroaches when the drama gets high.
Brilliant! Snyder needs to hire football people and step away.

Unless...

I don't agree with what's happening. Therefore, Snyder should step in and play GM again.

Got it.

Never meant it as being above the fray. Just don't personally see the hysteria as being useful. What's going on, really sucks. And I hope it gets better. Were I in charge moving forward, it would warrant more urgency on my part.

And if the opinions and reactions of our fellow fans and board-mates was so goddamn important, they wouldn't be questioned/debated, every single day, in every single thread. Don't single me out.

Unless you think I DO deserve it.

So what?
