what's up with Robert?

Cousins is no where near the QB Grififin is, and its not close. The 'reporters' assessment is about as sophisticated as yours or mine - i've been on the sidelines and what the media is even allowed to see is minimal. For them to be able to intelligently assess which guy is 'going through his route tree' more efficiently is just laughable. The coaches may have a valid view of that, and its possible as you described that Cousins has more experience with that approach than Griffin, but untrained media guys watching snippets from the sidelines don't know what they're seeing any more than the average fan does.

I'm telling you whatever natural tensions there are going on, they are perfectly natural given the circumstances and the rest is nothing more than epic exaggeration. That's my opinion.

This has a strong feel of Media driven hype. One desire I have though is that unless its an intentional stirring of the pot (and for why I have no idea), that RG3 and Shanny would simply stfu in the press conferences about it, even when asked. It doesnt seem to add any value and really seems to add drama for drama's sake.

Did I imagine last season? I realize things changed when he got injured, but up to that point, Griffin was as good as any QB in the league last year. Not as good as any rookie QB, just any QB period. The kid was transformative. He was amazing. I still get chills when I think about the TD pass to Moss against Dallas. That pass was incredible, and as good as Cousins looks, and as thrilled as I am to have him on my team, he doesn't make that throw. Or many of the other incredible throws Griff made. Griffin was more accurate than Peyton Manning or anyone else on the deep balls last season. The kid was AMAZING.

This is all over the second he takes the first snap of the season and hits Robinson for a deep TD.

Honestly I dont think it's anything more then a very competitive and passionate player, growing frustrated because he wants to be on the field. With age he will learn when his overwhelming drive to play is actually hinders the team, instead of helping it, but he's still young. This is his second season in the NFL... Shanahan is the coach. A player should always want to be on the field, and a coach should have the respect and balls to tell him when it's going to happen. If this transaction was taking place 4 years from now, I'd be concerned, but this? This is what you want to see from your QB and your HC.

Player saying "put me in coach" and coach saying "when the time is right"

It's one element of the position; one. No one is saying Cousins is a better quarterback.
It's what they get from talking to people, including Griffin and Cousins and Shanahan, and watching them in practice every day.
I'm glad you know more than they do though.

I haven't heard anyone say otherwise?

I guess I can't figure out why people would think he is insecure? Whitlock essentially said that's exactly what he is, and I can't figure out how that could be. Because of the injury? Still seems like a stretch to me, personally. I think the kid wants to play so badly he can't sit still, that's all it is.

Well, I'm not a fan of whitlock. I agree with El, he took that angle to an extreme.

I think most of the people's opinions (meaning, most of the people that think it's possible there may be a slight issue, not most redskins fans, most redskins fans refuse even entertain the idea) are the same as yours, that it doesn't really make any sense. If you had to name 1 player in the league whose job was safe (injury aside), I would think most people would pick Griffin - maybe Luck, then Griffin. The only thing I can think of is that everyone of them knows you can lose your job to injury; regardless of how ridiculous the possibility of Cousins starting over a healthy Griffin sounds, it might still be in his mind.

If I were to guess, I would assume Griffin just wants to play and that Shanahan just wants to make sure he's healthy; look at how Shanahan was treated for his decisions last year, it ruined what should have been a great story for the team. I think Chris Cooley is closer to being right than anyone else, they're probably doing it on purpose to screw with people.

and we thought the start of training camp would clam things down around here!!!!

You know, Shanahan's press conference really changed my mind about things.

He basically confirmed everything Robert said earlier in the day yesterday.

Up until that point, what Robert was saying directly conflicted with what Shanahan was saying up until that point. So it sounded like there was bad communication, tension, conflict, however you want to describe it.

Then Shanahan comes out and says "yeah, no that's the way it is"

The only contradictions that remained post-shanahan presser were whether or not he's doing 11 on 11's today, and whether there was any agreement on passing certain ability tests vs when he would start (Griffin said there was, Shanahan said there wasn't)

Tshile - we've jumped from 'RG3 is insecure' to dissecting the reasons why RG3 is insecure. I get it, it's what the media does. Is everything the media says wrong or agenda-driven? Of course not. But I've spent a lot of time on the sidelines, locker rooms, and talking to Redskins staff. so yeah, sorry, I do have some insight into just how much information they have access to - its not the kind of access that is going to allow them to draw the kind of conclusions that are being tossed around as fact. And the idea that media guys can assess QB prowess in areas like working through receiver progressions, it's just not reality. Hell - 3/4's of folks on the sidelines aren't even paying attention to what's going on on the field or are close enough to be able to make an assessment even if they are.

This is all about dots being connected that may or may not be accurate. I'm not saying its impossible that there's tension and that, yeah Griffin may have some opportunity for growth. But there's also some effort to create drama and a storyline that I think is fairly obvious and par for the course.

The route tree stuff also makes sense because my only knock on Griffin's play was that he didn't appear to be going through progressions, at least not early in the season. I'm not sure if thats because the first guy was open so often or what, but it looked like he was locking on to people.

This is interesting - I remember thinking the exact opposite, watching him play. Sometimes he locked in on someone, but he often looked off the safety, or checked down from his primary receiver. This is how he only threw 5 interceptions all season, IMO - he didn't just "lock" onto any one receiver.

Reinforces my opinion that you could put ten people in a room to watch film, and they would come away with 10 different perspectives.

lotta truth there. but the player needs to learn not to play into the media hands. he's a target for them. as his fame and wealth increase - he's only going to come in for more probing and disinformation. he's a sharp cookie. he will have to become even sharper assuming the best for his future.

I agree. Griffin AND Shanahan should refuse to comment on this kind of stuff. I also think there are some generational differences you can see even in this thread. My generations perspective is 'shut up and play, save the drama for your mama' but younger fans feel they have a right to know about everything. And certainly the media feels that to be the case. Not arguing one perspective is right but there has been a huge shift in what modern media folks consider a 'story'.

Yeah, and I may have been paying attention more at the start to that then at the end. being 3-6 to start the season allowed for me to focus on those things... in the end the play was just so amazing there was no need nor time :)

It could have also been just how good the offensive scheme was, or the fact that he knew he could take off whenever.

I have no doubts he's going to be one of the greatest QB's ever because of his passing.

Boone didn't say that he knows more than the media. He said they don't know anymore than us. Read between the lines. The media need something to talk about. They are paid to do that. So they are talking.

Exactly - there is no "comprehension test" to become a sports writer. You don't even have to be able to write particularly well in a lot of cases!

Robert should just zip it IMO. He's the face of the franchise and the leader of this team. As such, he should be minimizing any potential controversy to keep the focus where it should be. It's a lack of maturity and he'll probably (hopefully) grow out of it.

I think it's more a case of credibility than insecurity. "All in for week one" was going out on a limb but he's busted his ass to make that a reality. Wanting to play in preseason has a lot to do with it. He WANTS to be ready to go week one. Playing in preseason would do more to cement that in his mind. Perhaps, in the back of his mine, he feels there's a chance Mike "might" sit him week one. THAT'S the insecurity part. When I was a kid in school, I can remember worrying about whether or not I "might" get a bad grade on my report card or, through some glitch, I "might" fail at the end of the year and not get promoted to the next grade. Some would call that insecurity. I called it fear of failure. I think Griff has a fear of failure and it drives him.

He desparately wants to play week one so people will see he's a man of his word. The problem is, he's NOT in control of that. Shanahan is and it probably eats at Robert that he's not in control of that situation. Naturally frustration sets in. I think Mike gets that and that's why he's not bothered by any of this.

Just my two cents.

He said that right after he got done saying how wrong they are.
