Looks like next week for the Angel's Envy.

So many bourbons so little time!

Any way, I was able to sample my Four Roses before going to the Md-NC game. For you scotch lovers out there this might be worth a try for you. It tastes like no bourbon I have ever had before. It's floral in nature with a lot of citrus notes. Very very very very smooth, incredibly so for. 110+ proof bourbon. It reminds me of scotch without the nasty smoke and peat flavors. Best way I can describe it, is if normal bourbon was coke this tastes like 7-up.

The bottom line for me is while this is a FINE spirit, for my tastes I would take one of BTAC 3, 7 days of the week and twice on Sunday.

So, I finally went through all the gifted bourbon, and made it to the Angel's Envy.

After two separate tastings, I'm a little disappointed.

It seemed, thinner, or more watery than the others. It hit the tongue smoother than the others, but the burn was all on the back end. And, with less alcohol than the others, the burn seemed overstated. Maybe too many years of mass produced Jim Beam ruined me. lol

But, it's still early. Will see if my mind changes by the bottom of the bottle.

No doubt. I'll eventually make it up to the big boys you've mentioned here. Local availability will play a big roll, until I'm ready to order online. Maybe find a bar that carries more variety, and sample some that way.

I think I'm gonna try some Rowan's Creek. Never had it, it's not very expensive, and it has the tasting notes I like. Whisky Advocate gave it a 92. Very good for a bourbon in that price range.

Bob, have you had Noah's Mill? Not sure what its standing is, but I've sipped it before and it's really smooth. It was a recommendation from a guy at Spec's (liquor store in TX), and I really enjoyed it.

I've had Noah's Mill and I thought it was a good upper middle tier bourbon. I thought the flavor was good but I got more burn than you describe. I thought it was a good winter tailgate bourbon.

My problem is everything I try is not quit as good as the BTAC big 3 to me. So I ALWAYS end up going back to them. But the search for that diamond in the rough is sooooo enjoyable.

Interesting...I found it really smooth. Maybe we had different batches? Also, my taste buds might be screwy also...the first taste of ER17 I had was amazing...the second time it burned a little more. So it might be some wires crossed in my taste buds.

Could be the batch, it can be really different from one to the other. Noah's Mill was made up in small batches of about 20 barrels each, so there are a lot of differing batches.

It's bottled by KBD(Kentucky Bourbon Distillers) who also bottle Rowans Creek and Vintage 17. At this point KBD buys all their bourbon from other sources and mixes it to create their own bourbons. They have just recently started distilling their own stuff and in 7 to 15 years we'll get to try some.

Well seeing as you can't get a good bourbon out at a restaurant I was at a place today that had some good scotch. I tried Oban 14 and I have to say it was the best scotch I've ever tried. I don't like it as well as the top bourbons, but it was pretty good. I think you scotch drinkers would enjoy.

Is it peaty? Can't stand the Peaty scotches.

My favorite scotch is the Balvenie 12 and 15 years.

I didn't think it had a lot of peat. But again I'm new to Scotch. I equate smoke with peat and while you could taste the smoke it was not overwhelming like some scotches. What struck me the most was the smoothness. It was also a touch dry.

The peaty scotches taste like someone stuck a clump of sod in your drink, lol. Dirty grass.

Here are a couple reviews for it. Don't by any scotch on my say so!! lol For as much as I know about bourbons, I know NOTHING about scotches. Maybe try some out sometime if they have it at a bar.



The nose is rich and smoky. The medicinal notes are quite evident with notes of the sea; seaweed, tarry ropes. There are notes of cut hay and wood smoke rising with a gentle estery sweetness. The palate is thick and full. Notes of citrus with smooth sweetness. The smoke wafts with notes of seaweed. The oak is quite rich with grist and cereal and malt. The finish is of good length with fruit and dry oak.


Undeservedly Overlooked The Oban 14 was one of the first single malts I tried, as it was part of the Classic Malts promotion packs. At the time I really enjoyed it, but as the years passed and my experience and single malt collection expanded I tended to let my Oban 14 bottle gather dust, thinking that I would not enjoy it anymore, as I had liked it when I was inexperienced. Then, recently, I tried it again and I was wowed. Rich, creamy, sweet but not overly so, and the rich saltiness of salt toffee. Wonderful, for neophytes and "experts" alike.
