Like last year, BBQ will do a series of mock drafts and will provide continual updates based on team needs, free agency additions/losses, and injuries. Another mock will posted in early March and will be updated weekly at that juncture. The frequency of mocks will increase as we get closer to the draft and it will be a daily feature in the final week. Feel free to add your own ideas and mocks as we go along.

Team needs are S, RT, CB, TE, and DL. Some of these issues could be settled (somewhat) in free agency, but we will address those potential signings in future mocks. Let’s get this first mock in the books.

Round 2:
Jonathan Cyprien – Free Safety, Florida International
Considered to be one of the top five free safeties in the draft, Cyprien has an all-around skillset and size to succeed.

Round 3:
Kyle Long – Offensive Tackle, Oregon
The son of Hall-of-Famer Howie Long is an athletic tackle who started out on the defensive side. He has shined since moving to the offense and could fit in well coming from Oregon’s progressive system.

Round 4:
Terry Hawthorne – Cornerback, Illinois
Hawthorne has good size and quickness for a CB and is very physical. His performance in the Shrine game boosted his stock.

Round 5:
Joseph Fauria – Tight End, UCLA
Fauria had a great senior season and is an excellent red zone target with his height and athleticism. He needs to improve on blocking skills, but his size is an asset in the passing game.

Round 5:
Darius Slay - Cornerback, Mississippi St
Slay is an underrated cornerback prospect who had a solid senior campaign. He has good speed, good coverage skills, and better than average size.

Round 6:
Stefphon Jefferson – Running Back, Nevada
We don’t need a running back? Ok, that’s fine, but Mike Shanahan has this uncanny habit of finding hidden gems at this position and Jefferson fits the bill. Many scouts are calling him this year’s Alfred Morris. Jefferson’s offense ran the pistol and he had a great year. Enough said.

Round 7:
Brandon Williams, Defensive Tackle, Missouri Southern
Williams comes from a small school, but could have a big impact at the next level. His stats are impressive and he had a very good showing at the Senior Bowl.

UDFAs
1. DC Jefferson – TE, Rutgers
2. Elvis Fisher – OT, Missouri
3. Jeff Braun – OT, West Virginia
4. T.J. Barnes – DT, Georgia Tech
5. Steve Greer – ILB, Virginia
6. Trey Wilson – CB, Vanderbilt
7. Ray Ray Armstrong – S, Miami
8. James Wilson – G, Florida
9. Mark Jackson – G, Glenville St
10. Miguel Maysonet – RB, Stony Brook
11. Brandon Kaufman – WR, Eastern Washington
12. Rontez Miles – S, California (PA)
13. Tino Sunseri – QB, Pittsburgh
14. Demetrius McCray – CB, Appalachian St

Not too familiar with Cyprien, but I keep hearing good things about him. I hope Matt Elam from Florida falls to us, he's going to be a beast in the NFL. I think the guy I was hoping for, Kenny Vaccaro from Texas, is going to be gone in the first round. He improved his stock TOO much, lol. There's always a shot though; maybe if he runs a tenth or two of a second slower than expected at the combine, he'll slip? Who knows.

Shabby loves team captains. Look for the skills set, the position, but captaincy or character may be highest on his draft chart. It's also a reason a 3-6 team had the fortitude to make it all the way back.

I hope we can land Tyrann Mathieu in the later rounds...he is training with Pat Peterson in Boca Raton right now, and apparently is "focused" and "very locked in." Could be an absolute STEAL in the 4th or 5th round, if he falls that far. As a kick returner alone, he will light up the scoreboard, but he just has a knack for the ball. Kind of Sean Taylor-like in that aspect.

I think we shy away from Mathieu, honestly. I have to believe our staff has had just about enough of losing guys to suspensions.

Well, that's why I don't want to waste our 2nd or 3rd on him, because of the risks. But people do learn lessons, and I think being kicked off the LSU squad was a lesson he won't soon forget. And if he's drafted in the later rounds, he'll still have to prove himself. Not like he'll get first-round money. Its definitely a risk, but we need a returner. Paul is okay, Crawford is okay...Mathieu is electric.

I'm not arguing against him, I just think if you've had a problem with, well, anything on your team, you don't seek out guys with the same problem.

And FWIW, I don't disagree at all that people can and do change. Maybe he has. I HOPE, for his sake, that he has. I've had plenty of second chances in my life, so I certainly don't begrudge anyone else theirs.

I agree to an extent...however if you start avoiding all the college football players who have ever smoked reefer in their life, your draft pool is going to get pretty shallow. LOL.

Nice job BB. I like seeing these. The holes on this team are starting to dwindle and it'll allow us to take a draft style that's much different than in the past. We can start drafting for depth and future players - guys that can start in 2, 3, or even 4 years. Something we haven't had the luxury of doing as far back as I can remember.

To me there are only 4 'holes' on this team - safety, cb, some sort of pass rushing 3-4 style d lineman/nose tackle, and tight end. The secondary seems to be of the upmost importance for this offseason.

Obviously every position can always be upgraded, but I really like the way this team is being built.

I'm curious what being the division winner with Griffin as the QB and Shanahan as the coach will do for us in free agency to compliment the draft. We may *gasp* be a team FA's want to join to have a shot at winning instead of team that FA's want to join to pad their retirement...

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Shanahan bring in Steven Jackson for a visit. His contract demands will likely price us out of his services, but a 1-2 punch of Jackson & Morris could be devastating. He's a natural North-South ZBS style runner too.

I just wanted to thank you guys for threads like this. I don't follow any college ball at all really and don't have the time to read about all the prospects we "might" draft every year. But every year you guys put together something like this that highlights our needs and who may match them. Kudos to you BB and everyone else who knows anything about these kids and shares it. :claps:

That'd be CRUCIAL! (Are the kids still saying that? Crucial?) :)

Oh, no doubt. But being kicked off the team for multiple violations isn't "yeah, I smoked a time or two." He's shown (till now at least) a consistent penchant for having a case of the dumbass.

This thread really has reignited my excitement already. Thanks for the hard work in writing it BB!

Thanks for all of the kind words. I like putting the time into it for everyone's benefit. Most of the work on mocks starts about late October and culminates in late April. I spend time at a lot of mock/prospect sites and on YouTube. This thread will be updated with new mocks as we go along.

About the Honey Badger. I may include him in future mocks, but that will depend on several factors like FA signings and team communication - i.e., reading between the lines from team/staff statements and pressers. He has been on twitter with RG3 at times - that may mean nothing, but who knows at this point. I'll keep an eye on it.

Oh cool, now you've got me digging around draft prospects analysis sites.

Now the off-season has officially begun-tanks, BB.

Yah, I didn't say it in my OP, but nice work on the research, BB! I wouldn't be surprised to see us move back in the 2nd round, or out of the 2nd round altogether to acquire more picks. The safety/DB class this year is deep by all accounts.

Again, thanks for the kind words. :)

not the complete set...but obviously heavily weighted to defense. you know...I had this thought the other day that Shanahan was gonna do two things: grab a speed burning RB to offset AM...and grab one of those huge TEs at the combine who has speed and quickness.

too bad they aren't interested in safeties!!!!!!
