Well apparently this card was cursed from the beginning:

Consider all that happened. Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Thiago Alves was all set until Akiyama was injured. Siyar Bahadurzada stepped in for Akiyama, but he, too, got injured. Then Alves himself was off the card with an injury. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was to tangle with Chieck Kongo, but he was injured and the upstart Shawn Jordan filled in. Michael Bisping was set to face Tim Boetsch, but Bisping's injury forced Hector Lombard to fill in (not a terrible substitution by any means, but not the first plan). Thiago Silva was to collide with Mauricio Rua, but Silva's injury ended up scrapping the entire thing and Shogun moved to battle Brandon Vera at UFC on FOX 4. And so on and so forth.

Maybe the trainers need to adjust their regimens a little bit to avoid some of the injuries in training. Obviously by the nature of the sport some injuries in training will be unavoidable, but perhaps they could adjust somewhat. The string of injuries that ruined this card is too much.

That fight? By my count, there were four fights originally scheduled that were scrapped. A completely different card.

Anyone excited about the UFC on FOX card this weekend? I can't help but to feel that Shogun and Lyoto are going to walk through their competition.

One fight that I'm really excited about is Joe Lauzon vs. Jamie Varner. This is going to be tough for Lauzon but I'm a big fan of his as he always seems to either get a nice sub on his opponent or get knocked out in exciting fashion plus he's really accessible to fans, he always answers twitter questions and is always doing things for fans on his website. I also can't believe Phil Davis has been relegated to the undercard after one loss to Rashad.

Lauzon is exciting and I like him, but Varner looked better than I had seen him since he was WEC Champ. His last fight was on short notice and he looked outstanding.

I swore I would never watch another UFC fight, but I am interested to see the Lyoto v. Bader fight. It looks like the winner of this fight will get a rematch with Jones. Dana White has been selling Bader on us since his comeback after the Jones' loss. I am afraid after watching the ref do nothing about Silva's illegal knee to Sonnen's head while he was down, that my friend who fears corruption in the UFC may be correct. So if we see Bader win a questionable fight against Lyoto, I will never watch again.

That Anderson Silva knee without question hit Sonnen right in the solar plexus. Sonnen had no issue with the knee himself and neither should fans anymore. Rashad Evans hit a similar knee to the body of Tito Ortiz in their second fight a year ago, both completely legal.

Btw, Bader didn't come back from the Jones loss, he was guilotined by Tito in his very next fight. Unless Bader comes through with some kind of new found wrinkle in his game, I don't see him being able to do anything to stop Machida.

Also, Dana originally said that the winner of Shogun/Vera gets the next title shot. Assuming the favorites win, I'm fine with that. Either Shogun or Machida would be better rematches against Bones than Vera or Bader.

Right, Tito did get lucky, I forgot about that. But Bader won convincingly in his last fight over Jackson and Dana White has been talking him up big time.

You can say whatever you want about that shot to the "solar plexus", but there was significant contact to his head and Sonnen was never the same after Silva struck him illegally while he was down. I reviewed it numerous times after that fight. His knee struck Sonnen's head, there is no argument! And the way White is playing it is part of the issue.

Here's another example of the problem with UFC: Why isn't Nate Diaz fighting Ben Henderson for the Championship? He has earned it! I like Frankie Edgar, but he was handled rather easily by Henderson. He needs to win against another opponent before he gets a rematch. If nothing else, they should have made Edgar fight Diaz for a chance at the title. But they are more worried about the putting fans in the seats than treating fighters fairly. And you can't tell me a Henderson Diaz fight would not have put fans in the seat the same as Henderson Edgar.

I just find much of the UFC following in the footsteps of Boxing. And given the history of the Fertitta's, I can't imagine UFC not sliding down that slippery slope.

Oy yeah, Brandon Vera is turrible. Shogun is not what he was at Pride either, but Vera is turrible. While I think Bader matches up well with Lyoto, I agree that Lyoto is probably the best opponent for Jones. I am not saying he would have beaten Jones, but he has hit Jones harder than anyone else has. In their first fight I believe Lyoto won the first round. But damn that standing guillotine from Jones was something else!

Google image search "Anderson Silva knee Chael Sonnen" and every single pic that pops up clearly shows the knee in Chael's chest. A hard shot to the solar plexus will make anyone want to quit a fight.

As for the Henderson/Edgar rematch, Dana has said that Nate is next in line. 155 is prob the deepest division in MMA. Plus Henderson/Edgar II was already scheduled before Nate beat Jim Miller. Also, I wouldn't say that Edgar was handled easily, the fight went all 5 rounds and Henderson couldn't put Edgar away even when he had him hurt. Edgar is one of the toughest guys in the sport and he was the champ, he deserved that rematch but I agree that Nate deserves the winner.

And please stop with the MMA is turning into boxing talk, it's not even close to the truth.

Henderson dominated that fight from start to finish and this is someone who doesn't like Henderson much.

And I am not saying MMA is turning into boxing. Never once said it! UFC is turning into boxing! You watch King of the Cage or any of the other local fight organizations, or any that isn't owned by Zuffa and you will see lesser talented fighters, but much better fights. Zuffa production fights look almost scripted at times, or are poorly judged, just like boxing!

Also, it looks like it hits high and then moves down, the opposite of what you are stating. Nevertheless, it looks like the thigh hits him in the face which, as I understand it, still qualifies and an illegal strike.

Edit: I finally was able to see Lauzon submitted him. Now do we see Diaz and Lauzon fight or does Diaz get the winner between Henderson and Edgars?
