This is the official statement of Redskins general manager Bruce Allen on recent media reports of an adjusted salary cap for the 2012 season:
“The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.”

Cowboys' statement on penalties

We don't normally relay statement by the Dallas Cowboys here but as they have a common interest here with the Redskins in this salary cap mess, here is what they had to ssay about it:

The Dallas Cowboys were in compliance with all league salary cap rules during the uncapped year. We look forward to the start of the free agency period where our commitment to improving our team remains unchanged.

If we do so, based on the NFL approving those previous contracts, couldn't they disapprove our new FA contracts based on their ruling ?

Naturally, the Skins will "officially" be notified by the league minutes before the league year begins. Ethics be damned.

Just found out this...

Redskins and Cowboys haven't gotten anything in writing from the league. Therefore, it can't be enforced. If it comes in writing, Dan and Jerry have an open and shut case. The league was hoping to do this off the record in a manner of speaking.

Stay tuned folks. They called the NFL's bluff big time.

They asked for it and got it. They crossed the two most powerful owners in the league and tried to do it under the table - and illegally. The NFL and Goodell is about to be humiliated if something doesn't give.

It is not a tactic. It is a legal issue and the league tried to break the law by going off the record and under the table. Look for the league to save face in some way.
