WP: The Fix is In - Beck Is The Starting QB

I think what separates some of us in this discussion is that many of us will be ecstatic to be proven wrong and will be the first to joyfully acknowledge it, even if the guy we think was a hidden gem turns out to be an unpolishable turd.

This. How sweet would it be if for once, just friggin once, we stumbled upon the next 7th round Brady? I know it hardly ever happens, but we've sucked for so long now that it seems we're due some kind of luck.

Of course, as long as my Mom and the other FEDS keep skewering their Dan Snyder voo doo dolls, we may be screwed

this is how I feel after about page 4.

Thanks, Mike.

My sentiments also.

I won't be able to make any sort of judgement until after-a.) who is going to start against the Giants is determined and, b.) How they-and the team-actually do against the Giants.

There are just too many unanswered questions for me to "pick yer QB" at present.

I'll leave it up to you to decide who falls into this category.

I'd rather the Redskins be good than be 'right'. I'll warn you though...if Grossman has a Pro Bowl year and becomes an entrenched starter for years to come, I am never going to let a couple folks here forget it. Fair warning :)

fine by me! are you ready to put some money on it?

I'm waiting for the Iggles, Pats, Jets games...the quality teams. That's where we'll learn if either of these guys should be here next season.

If our offense, in particular the passing game, isn't able to put up points against the Giants that will tell me something as well.

Unfortunately.

Given all the new players I would be surprised if the Redskins were able to come out against the Giants in the opener and operate cleanly on offense. This is going to take some time folks. The offensive system might have been here last year but John Beck, Tim Hightower, Darrel Young, Chris Chester and Jabar Gaffney didn't play a single down in it on the field.

Well I have always said that Shanny knows QBs, aside from his one epic fail with Mcrapp who had the tools but not the brains, He has made chicken salad from chicken poo on several occasions (dont forget he was an OC as well). I liked beck coming out of college and always wondered why he didnt do better. I refuse to get too excited about preseason, but after watching hilites, Beck might be the QB we have been looking for for a while.

How did Sav go today? Better/worse than last week?

Better. Last week he had 2 out of 4 kicks inside the 20, which misleadingly lowered his average. Not a bad week. But this week, he also had 2 out of kicks inside the 20, EXCEPT this time, it didn't handicap his average, since his other kicks were so incredible tonight.

Last week : 4 kicks, 28.8 Avg, 2 Inside20, Long 43
This week : 4 kicks, 43.5 Avg (NET Avg of 41.0 !!), 2 Inside20, Long 52

Pretty sure he didn't have a punting opportunity in the first half either.

I thought he looked pretty good. If he continues the improvement from week to week, we could have a keeper.

As a side note, the Colts punter was stupid good. I the first half when the Colts kept getting the ball on their twenty and had maybe one first down, he crushed the punts deep to us every time, with very little outkicking his coverage happening. If Rocca can develop into that, I'd be very happy.

I'm hoping one of our QB's steps up and does a decent job. Not looking for great, but would settle for decent. Theisman wasn't a great QB, but decent.
What helped him was the system he ran and team around him.

I missed the game, since my son wanted to go fishing at Buckroe pier. Since he leaves for Radford on Wed. felt it was better to spend some time with him.
Back to my question. How did the OL and DL perform? I did get to see Hightower's run.

If you want to watch it, pm me. I can give you my nfl.com log-in info and you can watch in online any time you want.

They are also replaying the game tomorrow at 3pm on NFLN.

Did Landry play? I read an article that said our only main missing player was Otogwe.

According to the downloadable playbook at NFL.com, Landry, Fletcher, Banks and Carriker were also not playing. There were others as well.

Landry is on the PUP list so he is not counted on the weekly injury list or the pre-game list.

Austin's performance was encouraging because it is my belief the team is stronger when the return specialist can also play a regular position if needed.

Austin is a legitimate receiver while Banks is a novelty.

He's Rock Cartwright on returns though. Nothing special, just competent - at least that's what I'm seeing so far. Banks may be a novelty - but he's a danger to take it to the house every time. I agree with you that it's tough to give up a roster spot, especially when you are trying hard to keep young guys with potential on the roster, when that's ALL you're getting from him.

I could see the Banks thing going either way. If he were healthy, he'd be a lock imho. If he gets in there for the Ravens game and shows the spark he did week 1, I think he'll make the team.

I was wondering last night as I was driving home if they don't surprise everyone and place Banks on IR to stash him. If this is the same knee that was giving him problems last year, he is going to need some time to heal. He will not make it a month into the season if the knee swells up after any activity. The problem is, what was he doing in the off-season to get this knee rehabbed? I know he didn't have access to team doctors, did he do anything to rehab it? Maybe with a year off having access to the team doctors, this kid will have the time to heal and more importantly...mature.

Austin is showing for the second pre-season in a row that he is hungry and capable of being a WR in the NFL. I would hate to lose him in favor of an oft injured kick returner who could see limited time no matter how explosive he is.

Moss, Armstrong, Gaffney, Hankerson pretty much locks.

Stallworth - probable
Austin - ???
Paul - ???
Banks - ???

Interesting idea with the IR for Banks, I could see that. Austin I think makes it, and then it is up between Paul and Stallworth. Stallworth will obviously contribute a lot more this year, but I'm not sure that will be enough, given the long view of things I am hoping Shanny is taking.
