What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

If using the W is terrible…what about the Bears, Giants, 49ers in the NFL and a majority of MLB teams. Is the argument over using the W or the design of the W?

What’s weird for me is, I actually don’t hate the W. But I seem to be in the minority on that.
I’d stick with the W as well - but the uniforms and overall merchandise need a major overhaul.

The W is much like the name. It's blah. But there's really nothing wrong with it. It works fine.

Yeah - because it was basic. When you see it, you picture a team sluggin' it out in the mud. My problem with the W is every time I see it, I think of Snyder and his coffee cup.

The only team that really pulls off the city letters as a logo is the Giants. They have NY as the logo. They have had Giants on the side of the helmet before.

The Titans have the flaming thumbtack "T" which is the worst.

My feeling is if they wanted the W as the logo, just stay as Washington Football Team or go to Washington Football, or Washington Football Club. That makes sense.

If you're going to pick a name, create an image which you can create a brand around as part of the rollout. A block W, to me, is just lazy.

The Giants get away with it at this point because it's traditional, it's been that way for decades. With something new, it doesn't work.

Heck, just make Major Tuddy the official logo and move on. At least people can think about BBQ... :p

I think of Snyder
Again, not pointing any one person out, more of a general thought--but people are still so hung up on Snyder. I understand all the harm he has caused each and every one of us--seemingly personally--myself included. But we accomplished more this year than he ever has, and he's miserable over it! I hope we, as a fanbase, can start to look forward not backwards, upwards, not downwards...

The Bears and the 49ers also use city letters on their helmets. Most MLB teams use them on their caps.

Yeah. Ok. Fine. Maybe I'm wrong.

I still don't like the damn W.

Football isn't Baseball. :p

Some people find acceptance very difficult
I feel those people though. Up until, this season, I have swung back and forth in a perpetual state of denial and seething anger. I definitely was in a full blown mourning in 2020 and 2021.

What has finally gotten me over it was the 1st Generation of fans - my grandparents and the 4th Generation - my kids.

I grew up spending massive amounts of time doing all things Redskins with my grandparents who are still with us in their 90s. My grandmother is the biggest fan I have ever known and took the name change really hard. However, this season due to job stuff, we as a family got the chance to spend more time in person with my grandparents than normal after being gone from the DMV for 21 years. Watching my 12 year old son getting excited with his great-grandmother watching Jayden Daniels do amazing things is worth more than all the gold in Fort Knox regardless of the team name. Reminds me of me at her house 35 years ago with us getting excited about John Riggins crossing the goal line. My 10 year old daughter got to send her great-grandmother a video of my daughter flipping out after we witnessed as a family in-person Terry's game winning catch in Dallas.

Then when we are here at home my grandmother is constantly sending my son news stories about Jayden Daniels. (They both love some JD5.) She still calls them the Skins and he calls them the Commanders. She has decided that my kids as the biggest Washington fans of the great grandkids, are the ones to get her dear Redskins memorabilia collected over a lifetime. There is a constant stream of packages of family fandom heirlooms coming to the house for my kids because of the reality of her age. My son so wanted to get to the SB because I promised we could fly to the DMV and have a SB party at my grandparents house. He wanted a SB berth, but he wanted more than anything to spend it watching with my grandparents. (He still talks about the few games we got to watch at their house this season when we were in town.)

I am honestly tearing up typing this and probably rambling too much....

In the end, I have finally accepted because whether the Commanders or some other new name, the next links of dear family memories have been forged from my grandparents, through my parents and me, and down to my kids. Those memories are why I started loving this team as a 7 year old little boy, and why I will love this team and continue to make memories even though we now have a goofy name.

What are you having trouble accepting?

Nothing. I prefer a different outcome but it is out of my hands. I just need to move forward with the future of our team. It is what it is. I've never wavered supporting this team and I will go to the grave a true fan since the late 60s. Some things change in life and you can either fight them or accept them, that is your decision. It is easier for me to accept the things and move forward and change.

Others find that difficult and want to fight what will not change. I would rather invest positive energy moving forward then negative energy trying to go backwards

Well said, AngryChuckT. I'm in a similar spot, but I just feel stuck.

As many on this board know (and if you read my posts of my bitching and moaning like a 5yr old the last two days), my connection to the team and has been for the past 40 years, my Native American heritage. It's my identity, it's who I am, I'm A REDSKINS fan, and it's a connection to my ancestry.

And while I never wanted the name Redskins to come back because we're all tired of the controversy, I had renewed hope Harris and company would honor the past with any number of suitable options.... But this week's news was a stark kick in the gut that the new ownership group thinks my entire demographic portion of the fanbase is expendable. Considering I spend EASILY 10-20x on merchandise and tickets over the years, then I can only reply with my pocketbook. It's the only thing in my control.

At this point, with zero connection to our Native American history, the logical thing to do would be to become a Chiefs fan 🤮🤢. I live only 2 hours from Arrowhead and everyone in my family and friends circles are already fans.

But I don't think I can ever get there. I BLEED Burgundy and Gold. Yet my team is DEAD. There's a damn expansion franchise that killed it.

So I'm lost. Seeing the "Commanders" win anything at all going forward would almost feel like watching your ex girlfriend marry the guy she cheated with and you're now supposed to be happy for her because she found success. Just feels dirty.

Boone and crew - thanks for this board and providing the safe space to bitch, moan, kick and pout. Said it before, this place feels like the good ol' days of ES without the negativity that came in over the later years

Maybe when August rolls around, I'll try and force myself to find interest. But the current mood is disdain and shock. Still can't believe it.

Thankfully the passage of time heals most things. Give it time brother and know you have tons of company amongst those of us disappointed. There are bigger problems in life. I’m not going to give Josh Harris and the stupid name much more time in my head because frankly, it will ruin what was a great season.
