- Wentz failure to get rid of the ball time and time again contributed considerably to the 9 sacks on the day.
- Wentz was largely inaccurate, consistently missing the mark on even short passes when he did have time and protection to throw.
- Wentz fumbled the ball twice, one of those fumbles killing a drive.
- Although there were a number of opportunities to use his feet to counter the pass rush as he did effectively several times the week before, Wentz generally refused to do so.
- As we saw last week against Detroit, Wentz was unable to lead the offense out of the doldrums they seemed stuck in all day.
This was a game perfectly illustrating the argument some make that with Wentz it is often not about the stat line. Even on a terrible day, Wentz' stats were not glaringly awful. 25/43 (58%) completions for 211 yds, no INTs. While Wentz will likely remain in the top 10 in passing for the year, that was about as ineffective a QB performance as we have seen in Washington in a long time, and let's be real - that is truly saying something.
The other concerning factor is that this was a huge game. First post-COVID pandemic division match up, at home, against a smack-talking and disrespectful opponent, and against Carson's former team. Was this just one of those inexplicable 'bad days' all pro QBs have occasionally, or is there as many have argued, something flawed and broken in Wentz' psyche that causes him to sputter and fold in bigtime games? Many will have already made up their mind about that, but in terms of whether Wentz can resurrect his image and career in DC, it's too early to know. Yesterday was a game where those who believe both Heinicke or Sam Howell might've given us a better showing cannot be argued with.
The signs are not looking positive in Week 3 - that's for certain. And while there are many, many factors involved in the kind of Commander's performance (or lack thereof) we witnessed yesterday, that QB performance was simply unacceptable from a veteran with the natural ability and intelligence Wentz possesses.
On the Week 4 against the Cowboys. Let's hope the 2020 Wentz-O-Meter graph doesn't continue to look like the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
