In a brutal division home loss, in a game entirely dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles, our BGO Supercomputer assigns QB Carson Wentz a woeful 4.5 on the Wentz-O-Meter. Factors heavily impacting Wentz' 3rd straight scoring decline included:
  • Wentz failure to get rid of the ball time and time again contributed considerably to the 9 sacks on the day.
  • Wentz was largely inaccurate, consistently missing the mark on even short passes when he did have time and protection to throw.
  • Wentz fumbled the ball twice, one of those fumbles killing a drive.
  • Although there were a number of opportunities to use his feet to counter the pass rush as he did effectively several times the week before, Wentz generally refused to do so.
  • As we saw last week against Detroit, Wentz was unable to lead the offense out of the doldrums they seemed stuck in all day.
To dive in a little deeper, Wentz (to his credit) acknowledged all of these shortcomings in his post-game presser. It's clear he knows his performance lead the way in a dismal overall team effort. He did not lose the game on his own, but it would've been impossible to mount any kind of serious opposition given the way he played. It was bad enough, a HC more focused on and intent on winning may have made a change at halftime, even if just for that game.

This was a game perfectly illustrating the argument some make that with Wentz it is often not about the stat line. Even on a terrible day, Wentz' stats were not glaringly awful. 25/43 (58%) completions for 211 yds, no INTs. While Wentz will likely remain in the top 10 in passing for the year, that was about as ineffective a QB performance as we have seen in Washington in a long time, and let's be real - that is truly saying something.

The other concerning factor is that this was a huge game. First post-COVID pandemic division match up, at home, against a smack-talking and disrespectful opponent, and against Carson's former team. Was this just one of those inexplicable 'bad days' all pro QBs have occasionally, or is there as many have argued, something flawed and broken in Wentz' psyche that causes him to sputter and fold in bigtime games? Many will have already made up their mind about that, but in terms of whether Wentz can resurrect his image and career in DC, it's too early to know. Yesterday was a game where those who believe both Heinicke or Sam Howell might've given us a better showing cannot be argued with.

The signs are not looking positive in Week 3 - that's for certain. And while there are many, many factors involved in the kind of Commander's performance (or lack thereof) we witnessed yesterday, that QB performance was simply unacceptable from a veteran with the natural ability and intelligence Wentz possesses.

On the Week 4 against the Cowboys. Let's hope the 2020 Wentz-O-Meter graph doesn't continue to look like the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

I gave Wentz a 4, which some here will think generous but the play calling really didn't do him any favors and the offensive line started the game completely asleep.

I even considered giving him a 5 for this but his accuracy issues through the whole of the game just wouldn't allow for it.

I gave him a 1. Scoring 8 points total in the game falls on him just as much as it does Turner.

He threw the ball 43 times and only had 211 yards. Oof

Bout read my mind here Neo, that game plan was atrocious and didn't serve anyone on offense well. Wentz getting shellacked and still calling 5 and 7 step drops is mind boggling and when we had success on the run, we stopped. Turner deserves a -6 on the turd o meter

I went 5. He absolutely deserves some of the responsibility, but I also don't think he was our biggest problem

I feel like we're a bunch of guys standing in a circle around a giant building, that's rapidly burning down, and debating with each other, "What's the biggest problem with this building burning to ashes ?"

And no one even thought to bring marshmallows

Same.
Trust me, if you thought it was bad on TV, it was much, much worse in person :cautious:

A 2.5.

For the first half...it's a zero. Every bad aspect of his game but nothing good. Not getting rid of the ball, getting strip sacked, inaccurate throws.

He did complete some short passes to start the second and yes, he did exploit the one time Philly busted a coverage to Mclaurin. But that was garbage time.

Just a little bit of a curve granted to him due to playcalling, although the playcalling is a chicken and egg thing. Is Turner in love with Wentz's arm so much he just wants to go deep? Or is it because this is basically a whole glorified preseason for the staff....

I really wouldn’t argue with any score. He didn’t throw any picks and almost competed 60% of his passes so he got some grace on those points. He is pretty good at owning his performance and rightly or wrongly he does get some credit for that. A 4.5 at the Pro Level is pretty harsh so I’m more or less in synch with the Wentz-O-Meter this week.

An awful day for Washington from top to bottom. Philly mopped the floor with us from the get go and it was another embarrassing defeat to a division rival. I don't think anybody should be applauded even in the slightest way on that roster.

Wentz was brought in to be the difference-maker and the missing piece to help this team elevate to the next level. While he often didn't stand a chance yesterday, there were enough errors on his part to warrant some blame as well. You can't have that if you want to see legitimate progress.

Carson and the entire team get a 1 from me.

Can you tell I'm miserable?

Surrounded by Eagles fans in your seats, I suppose ?
Just a few, but that's probably because we have great seats, (200's under cover, on the home side). Most of the fans in our section are pretty loyal STH's and we see the same faces at most of the games.
That being said, yes, the stadium was full of Iggles fans. It was one of the shittiest games that I've ever been too.

People can blame the stadium, Snyder, the team sucks, etc., (valid points that should be in another thread), but I point the finger squarely at the "fans" who stay away in droves, regardless of the reasons.
They are a big reason that there are so many opposing asses in those seats. Those folks and the STH's who sell them. This isn't so much me blaming anyone*,(I'm sure that they have their reasons), but just stating a fact.

* yeah it is ;)

Washington fans not in those seats are the effect - not the cause. And as you said, there are about 30 years of causes that got us to this place.

Amen!

Indeed. I would have given Wentz a negative score if possible.

And most of those passing yards were a gift from the Eagles playing a prevent defense the entire 4th quarter. He played much worse than his stats indicate. Seems to be a common thing with him.

-16 yards passing and 2 fumbles in the first half earns a 5 from you?

What does a QB have to do to earn a 1?? -100 yards passing, 3 INTs, and 4 fumbles???
