We Suck

Griffin's fumble and the overturned TD were plays that last year went our way. Things will get better. If not...keep plenty of bourbon on hand.

Yep...specifically the Griffin fumble. Last year it went right into Morgan's hands for a TD! This year...not so much. Ugh.

The cap penalty excuse is getting old too...We spent every dime possible for years and what did it do? What was the excuse in those years? Its getting hard to keep up.

Like we're gonna be "all-world" when we have money to spend...cant buy quality draft picks.

There'd be a difference in keeping your picks plus using free agency to plug holes vs the Vinny Way: trade all your picks away except for 2 or 3 and then go overboard on free agency.

I'd like for the team to try that for a change.

Well we're light picks and money so the ghost of Vinnie haunts us. I'm wit ya...cant wait till we have picks and money but so many redskin fans cant wait to give up both ASAP

60 yards is long pass slightly underthrown a skosh late but still right in his hands, If he holds on we aren't having this discussion.
Never said otherwise. Of course, a split second sooner, and a yard deeper, and he hits him in stride, preventing the corner from catching him and taking him to the ground, where the ball comes loose. Wouldn't be having the discussion then either.

not so sure I agree Dead.

true...this team has been cleaning up prior year messes forever. that said....Shanny's first year was a total loss beginning the purge of the mess left by Vinny. years 2-4 (this season) have been roster rebuild. the cap hit, which is huge, impacts two of those years. couple that to the Griff draft costs and there are significant holes that can't be filled.

Longer term: I think the more serious issue is whether the franchise QB and the coaching staff see eye to eye on the overall scheme.

What issue? Coaches coach and players play. Period. Griff isn't getting paid to "see eye to eye on the overall scheme", he is getting paid to go out on the field and implement it.

Money was not an issue! We had 2 million to pay Fred Davis! There is not a soul on this board who can tell me that wouldn't have been money better spent on an RT!!!

but did any of us know that Davis was going to suck this badly?

I mean, I didnt think he was going to put up Graham numbers, but I thought he would be at least the potential Davis we had.

and I also didnt think Reed was going to show up this early.

Well...in the off-season before we re-signed him, I screamed loudly that I hoped we did not sign him! He's dumb, coming off achilles injury, makes stupid plays... Yeah, I think we knew!

I sort of have to agree with Mike here. $2 million is cheap for the Davis we had pre-injury. The guy was having a pretty good year and there was no reason to think he wouldn't pick back up. Instead he has fallen off the deep end into who knows where.

Add to that the fact that I don't think we could have signed a RT any better than Polumbus for $2 million and I don't see the harm in resigning Sleepy.

Has he made some boneheaded moves off the field in his day? Yeah, but the few players haven't no days. No one in this league is going field a squad of 53 angels today. It just isn't going to happen. Frankly, it has never happened in the history of the game. We just have more media coverage now, both professional and amateur.

The good news is that Sleepy is on a 1 year deal. Reed is stepping up. Paulsen is doing what Paulsen does. We don't need to resign Fred in the off season. He can try his hand somewhere else.

Heck, if he keeps playing the way he is playing I might entertain dumping him mid-season and promoting someone off the PS.

that's the theory! not so sure that is the practice in every instance. RG is at the front end of what we hope is 10-12 yrs. Shanny is at the tail end and has a winning percentage (for Skins) LOWER than that of his combined predecessors since 1992.

Neo, $2 million was entirely too much for a knuckle head who continues to make bone headed plays...even this year! Especially when we had such glaring needs on OL. The problem with the OL is not so much the quality of the player as much as Shanahan's refusal to accept that he can plug players into scheme...washed up or worthless players anywhere else in the NFL. Our OL is atrocious and given the achilles injury and Davis' inability to wrap his head around anything but himself should have been enough to rid ourselves of him and save the money! As for your no RT's assertion...Winston Justice! He's doing a great job at LT for the Broncos right now.

Confidence is a lethal weapon. This team doesn't have any. Can they develop some? Sure. Will they?

This is basically the same team, personnel-wise, that we had last year, which ended the season, 7-0, winning the division, and a home playoff game, which clearly bred confidence. So the current state of the team theoretically should not be a matter of having confidence. Hopefully, they never lost it, completely, in such a short span of time.

And how much did he cost Denver? And would he have signed here?

Just because a guy is available doesn't mean he is affordable or interested in being a Redskin? There is more to it than just wanting a guy.

I think our woes are a combination of Griffin's rust and hesitancy (understandable after coming back from such a severe injury), a very tough schedule, an extremely young secondary, and a little bit of overconfidence coming into this season. I think the guys read a few too many of their own headlines and that, coupled with aforementioned challenges has gotten us to our 0-3 record.

Guys keep saying 8 wins and more are possible. Well, ANYTHING is 'possible'. But looking at our schedule, finding 8+ wins takes an awful lot of optimism, maybe even suspension of disbelief. If we sweep the division (how likely is that?) from here, then win the 3 non-conference games that should be wins if we play to our potential, that gets us to 8 wins. To get beyond 8 wins, we have to beat 1 or more of the following teams:

Chicago
Denver (in Denver)
49ers
Chiefs
Falcons

Could we rebound? I guess. But it'll take a much more impressive effort than anything we did last year. We got to the playoffs mostly on the back of our divisional opponents, as well as with a win over the Browns. The only playoff team we beat in our 7 game streak was the Ravens, and it took overtime and some major luck to do that.

We look like a shell of the team we were last year. I have a hard time seeing how we get to .500 having given away 2 of 3 we should've won to start the season. I wish I were more optimistic, but looking at the road ahead, it's hard to find the wins.

The only possible saving grace? Dallas has almost as hard a path as we do. Of course, they're already 2 games up on us, so that may not matter. If the Giants and Philly continue to struggle, it's quite possible a .500 record really could win the NFC East. That would simply be amazing.

You could also add the Giants and Dallas to that, for all intents and purposes, because we effectively removed them from the playoffs, and prevented them from winning the division with our win against them, during that streak. Same with our 2 wins against Dallas.

Dallas and the Giants weren't good enough to get to the playoffs. I don't think saying they 'would have been' is really valid. The bottom line is, we will have to sweep the division from here, then beat some impressive teams to replicate last year's feat. The barriers that stand in the way of that kind of run are pretty considerable. It will be a much more difficult challenge. I don't see evidence so far that we're up to it. Any one of the 3 losses to open this season would've qualified as our worst game of the season last year.

I want to find sunshine, believe me. But our best hopes in 2013 hinged on beating the teams we should. We almost HAD to do that to have a chance given our schedule. We've failed to do that. And the road ahead gets much tougher from here.

I just don't understand how we fail at one of the most basic fundamentals in football: tackling.

These guys have been doing this since 3rd grade. How in the blue hell do you forget how to tackle?

Giants came as close to being division winners as is physically possible, without actually doing so - with just a one point loss to us, in a game which would have given them the division. Being one point away, is pretty convincing, that they at least deserved the label "playoff-calibre". Yes, I'm nit-picking here, but that's my nature, can't help it :)

Don't blame the players. I am certain that John Mara is having secret agents add mild sedatives to the Gatorade on our sidelines.
