So it appears this thread may actually be necessary now. It's apparently taking off like a rocket now and I imagine the new will start rolling in as the lease at Fedex Field expires in 4 years. That means they need to break ground NOW if they're going ot have the new stadium in place.

There has bene speculation (and floated rumors) that VA is a major player including some areas that are less than ideal to a lot of the current fanbase... but this news that has been swirling in the last 48 hours or so since the name drop has the ability re-inject a lot of the love back in the franchise that may have been lost over the last couple years.

IF this were to come to fruition... it would be a big deal.

Anyways... ALL THINGS STADIUM, it looks like it may be time to start talking about it.

My attitude is screw DC. They were one of the most vocal in demanding the team change its racist name but now they want Washington to ‘come home’. I’ll bet you do.

DC and MD residents have both had the stadium in their back yard.

Time for fans in Virginia to experience that imho.

I bet they do want it in DC. Some billionaire (hopefully a new one) who invests a billion in the city, of course they want it. I’m not speaking logistics, but somewhere in northern VA or in MD near the Harbor and Casino. There is nowhere else in MD if DC is avoided. So if it couldn’t go there, then somewhere in VA just outside of DC.

There are two chances in my mind that Snyder will pay for the stadium.

Slim and none.

And Slim has left the building.

An in-city stadium would be awesome but does anyone seriously think that Snyder would pay for it?

My instinct is that putting a new stadium in the RFK location is a nonstarter. Stadiums these days are not just the arena but the entirety of the surrounding area and how it can be adapted for commercial space.
Restaurants, shopping, hotels…all you have to do is think about Jerry World, SOFI and Vegas.

I’m pretty familiar with the area around RFK. I just don’t see that being a good marriage with todays NFL stadium complex reality.

I just don’t know what surrounding land the DC govt controls, like the Armory complex etc. Or what land they could grab via eminent domain. One plus would be adjacent jail for Eagles fans.

To piggyback on Om's post - isn't that entire area kind of a shitty run down area? Sort of always has been. As Mark said, the current model is to have a stadium put in an area full of supporting businesses, restaurants, bars, shops... How do you accomplish that at the RFK site? Also, one of the worst parts of Fed Ex is getting in and out of the stadium. It wasn't any better at RFK, and that was with 50,000 fans, not 90-100,000 going in and out.

I continue to believe that most of Washington's fans live in Virginia, and that picking a large, less developed area to the south allows you to attract more fans to games, build a community of supporting businesses around a potential stadium, and design a traffic pattern to and from the stadium that is less of a nightmare. Whereever they build a stadium, one thing that HAS to happen is adding a metro station that sits right at the front door of the new stadium. Ridiculous not to have that.

I believe that ultimately the stadium will be built on the Oxon Farms land in the Oxon Hill area of Maryland, near National Harbor.

IMO putting it far out in Loudoun or Prince William counties would not be a wise idea.

Quite possible. Why would Loudon/Prince Williams County be a bad idea Chris? Those areas are massively populated now - it's not like it was back in the RFK days where there was nothing but farmland and sparse residences. You have to go halfway to Richmond to find totally underdeveloped spaces. I'm not sure how far Metro runs to the south, that might be an issue, just not sure?

I think most of Maryland is Ravens country now. Why go further into Maryland and make the largest part of your fanbase drive even further to get to a game?

Not saying it won't happen or that it's not an attractive area. I have no idea. I do know that of all the interested parties potentially vying for a deal, Larry Hogan is probably the most capable, so he'd have the advantage from that perspective.

That Oxon Farms land is basically the the border of DC, Md and Va. Little travel imposed on DC residents. Closer for residents of Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax than Loudoun and Prince William county locations. And it is in PG county and within better reach for residents of Montgomery Co.

It reminds me of when Detroit built the Silverdome in Pontiac. If the vision really is to create a sports and entertainment destination, with all of the attendant accoutrements, to host 100+ events per year I think the best chance for success would be within a reasonable reach of the residents that live in what would be considered the traditional DMV locale.

The place i've always wanted them to consider but have never heard spoken is the Springfield Mall site. Literally 5 highways converging on the area, and the southern most (your answer to an early question boone) Metro stop, Franconia / Springfield is less very easily within walking distance of the main site. Here are overhead shots with Google Earth scaled the same so the site is very similar in size to Fedex Field. There are shops already built up on one side of the mall while the other is basically vacant. If you're not familiar with the area, at the bottom is a big government facility that I BELIEVE was part of the conversation when they originally were talking about where Nats Park would go... so I THINK the area is 'available.' To the right of that is the Metro. The stadium coudl be built right along 289 (Fairfax County Parkway) where Michaels and Spring Mall Dr are. It's 8 miles south of the city and there are thoroughfares all over the place.

Wasn’t the Springfield interchange ranked as one of the worst in America? I’m not sure adding stadium traffic to that specific spot would work. On the other hand, traffic is already bad and will be no matter where they put the stadium.

Prior to the re-design (and during the construction) yes, it was terrible. It flows now. It looks like a hotwheels track, but it's much less congested.

Its also limited to 10 times a year (and a handful of other events or dare I say playoff games) with the vast majority of those being on the weekend. Add to that the Metro option, vehicle traffic will be reduced. On top of that having a 65K seat stadium helps lessen that number.

You know I grew up in Franconia - right?

I'll be honest... my attitude is DC residents got to have the stadium in their backyard for decades. Ditto Maryland (half of whose citizens no longer root for the team). Guessing more Washington fans live in Virginia than either DC or Maryland. They deserve a chance to have the stadium in their state.

No one is going to pay for a billion dollar stadium to host a NFL home game season and a few more events.

It will be a multi-use facility for concerts, other sporting events, etc etc etc.

I think Metro access to the Springfield location is a big plus. I do wonder if NIMBY becomes an issue.

lol it was a general 'if you're not familiar'

This is why it's kind of the best of all worlds. Easy access via 395 / 295 from DC. Easy access from Eastern MD via 495. Easy access west via FFX Parkway or 495 to 66. 95 South is right there. Departing would open up in all directions.

Let's leave him out of it.

Isn't the whole NIMBY thing more about opposing it because it could increase crime, lower property values, or other negative effects... doesn't seem like an NFL stadium would bring a lot of negatives? I guess traffic and hooliganism... Has that been raised a lot in other areas where new NFL stadiums were planned, anyone know? That would be an argument to go further south to less populated areas.

I think it’s more of an argument for when it is in your back yard as opposed to someone else’s back yard. 🤪

I certainly wouldn’t want a stadium or an arena in mine.
