The Sky is not Falling Thread

With the rash of injuries tonight, the sky has fallen.

I’m waiting for The Sky Is Falling thread. (Not to be confused with most other football related threads.)

Here is the rub. Once you get to 6 losses, the only way to make the post-season (outside of it being one of those really weird seasons where every team falls off and is .500ish going into final week) is to run the table, and I wouldn't predict this team, even completely healthy, to be capable of that this season.

All I ask is that after the next loss (or at the most their 7th loss) get the old men off the field. It is painful watching their inability to keep up with even average NFL players over and over......once the math removes W/L column from being a concern, get the young folks out there on the field because they need to find out which of the draft picks can play or at least be developed because a few of these players either need to retire or take their services somewhere else in the offseason.

I’m honestly about as positive as I get after a loss. Losing to KC at Arrowhead was always expected.

Losing three in a row is bad, but we did that last year before going on our run.

3-5 looks really bad, but coming up we have two home games and a winnable game in Madrid before the bye, we could win two of those and go into the bye in the hunt at 5-6.

Once the math is against us most of those old guys are going to have lingering ankle and hammy injuries that keep them off the field, no doubt about it. Wagner the exception because that man will compile tackles and the odd sack and FF/INT until he retires (a few months from now).

The most frustrating thing for me is not having our team out there all year the way it was supposed to be. The truth is we really don’t know what we can be, and it just might not happen this year if we can’t get everybody back out there healthy at the same time. It’s like one step forward two steps back all year. I really feel like we need to get a win at home against Seattle. If we go to 3-6, it’s gonna be tough to do anything this season.

I’m now hoping we lose next week to make the sell decision obvious. We have a bunch of saleable assets in Samuel, Payne and Miller and not a whole lot of sellers. I doubt they move Bobby or Ertz due to the respect piece of this

This roster just isn't good enough to withstand these injuries. There are starters that are over the hill but the coaches seem uncomfortable getting other players into the game on pivotal downs.

The 49ers as the opposite example and example of what could be different in the future if the roster is built properly over the next few seasons. They are 5-3 with tons of injuries as well, but that roster is able to "next man up" their way to still looking capable. Obviously against the better teams they are going to falter, but I would be in favor of them beating teams like The Bears & Falcons even with the injuries.

You are correct, but there is a lot of superior coaching as well. I actually don't think the offensive personnel there (especially with injuries, to be clear) is vastly superior to here. The "next man up" philosophy has to be combined with coaching that puts players in a position to succeed. If you don't have that type of coaching, "next man up" is just words. The backups usually have more limited skillsets, but specific things they may be good at, so it's definitely a bigger challenge for coaches.

HOWEVER: in the spirit of this thread, I will emphasize that this team DOES have talent. While I have lost confidence in the coaches, I do think they have a win streak in them. I hope Jayden and Terry can see the field again together soon!

There's always next year.

Sorry thats the best i can come up with right now, I'll work on it.

Ok. Well, until next year.

The thread title is referencing more than this season. Quite possible this season is a lost cause. We likely can’t catch and pass the Eagles and we are making it extremely difficult to win a wildcard spot.

There are still some positives to be found though even in a lost season.

To conflate cliches.

The sky is falling, but the sun will come up tomorrow.

Well part of this is due to the overoptimization we’ve done for core special teamers. Reavo had a solid game yesterday but he, Butler and Owens should not be playing defensive snaps. The safety position fell like a house of cards once Harris got hurt. Next year, one of those three needs to go and we need to add a true #1 safety

I think Karma punched Terry in the nuts!! All that off season crying for a bigger contract, losing some of the fan base in his corner, messing up the locker room vibrations and for what?! To be sidelined with injuries and not contribute!! Hopefully it's a lesson learned!!

To be fair, injuries happen. Sometimes at the worst times. For Terry's situation specifically the issue I see is that it seems like he is trying to play through whatever the actual injury is versus actually being healthy and coming back. Whatever is going on with him might plague his entire season if the coaches aren't willing to bite the bullet and just shut him down. (I am not stating that as a fact, just saying maybe, because the information around whatever the injury seems to be so vague).

Terry probably needs to just shut it down until he is fully healthy because if he is basically trying to play the "maybe I will be okay" guessing game every week he will likely be cleared to play, but we are going to see the issue we saw last night. He shows his value on a couple plays, but lack of being in game shape and health means he is coming off the field on third downs where he is needed the most.
