The Race to Black Monday

Do you have W&M ties too? Liking the Joe Brady hire then?
Class of 1999. I missed McDermott and Tomlin by a year I think. Tomlin was class of 1995. I started fall of 1995.

Very excited about Joe Brady. If Tomlin and McDermott get jobs next year that’s 3 tribe coaches in the NFL. That would be bananas.

1993 here. It would be nuts if they all had jobs. All from the Laycock tree.

Looks like Sam darnold just got Kwesi Adofo-mensa fired.

All gms make mistakes but letting Daniel Jones and Sam darnold walk and relying on a guy with absolutely no experience was unforgivable especially since Jones had a good season and darnold is in the superbowl.

Yeah, I was one of the few that actually went to every game and watched every game. The good news was very few students actually went to the game so we sat or stood wherever we wanted to.

Watched some good football and some really bad football.

Probably my most devastating loss in all of my time as a fan was in the 1996 season, we had a chance to go the the I-AA Semifinal game. We were playing Northern Iowa.

The game was at Northern Iowa, and we got completely roasted in the first half. And then pulled all the way back, and stopped them with not a lot of time left. And then Darren fucking Sharper muffed a punt, gave the ball back, they kicked a FG to win 38-25.

My roommates and I listened to the game on the radio because it was not broadcast as far as I know.

I swear, if I had seen Darren Sharper on campus over the next several weeks, he might have gotten a shiv to the appendix. Then GB drafted him, I think with the last pick of the 2nd round. Preseason the next year, Holmgren put him back there to return a punt in pre-season. He muffed that, and then I don't think Holmgren ever tried again. So, I have a very odd hatred of Darren Sharper. Turned out he was one bad dude also.

Anyway, it was devastating. It was so close. My friends and I were going to go to Marshall if we won, as our our consolation prize would have been to be beaten by 90 by the Marshall team that had Randy Moss. Who caught 9 passes for 220 yards in the championship game against Montana. He might have set a collegiate record which still might be standing if he played us. But we would have been there to see it.

I got into W&M but decided to attend UVa instead. My uncle and his wife also attended W&M.

I don't have an opinion on the GM and whether he deserved to get fired. But Sam Darnold had a LOT of chances to show he could be a winning QB and couldn't do it. I would struggle to blame his GMs for the first 2/3rds of his career. Granted, he played for bad teams. But still. And Daniel Jones? I still wouldn't want him as my QB because he's shown glimpses over the course of his long career, he just couldn't limit his mistakes over the long haul. The Giants GM should've been fired for giving Jones an extension and massive payday - not for letting him go.

It’s interesting because you wonder on how collaborative the approach is. Did he kind of tell KoC that this plan (go with McCarthy) was the plan, did it go the other direction, was it 50/50?

Right now, up to this point, I think we have a lot of signs (including his own words) showing AP to be highly collaborative. That worked for Kyle and Lynch in SF but it doesn’t work for everyone and can even cause problems in certain circumstances. It will be interesting to see if he adapts.

When you win 14 games with a quarterback who has a near mvp level season and then struggle to win 9 games the next year with one of the best defenses in the league because you let that quarterback walk in free agency and he nearly repeats that success the next year and takes his new team to the superbowl you're going to have a lot of questions to answer, especially when your answer at quarterback fails miserably.

As has been stated it matters where Kevin occonell stood on the matter but I think the firing of Kwesi answers that question.

Bottom line is he has seen (as have we all) flash in the pan quarterbacks who got paid based of one good season that could never duplicate that success and he didn't want to make that mistake.

He was obviously wrong and he paid the price for it.

So everybody is buying into Sam Darnold all of a sudden? Holy Shit.

If Drake Maye wasn't a total turnover machine I'd be piling money onto the Pats.

This is kind of like the Favre vs Bledsoe SB. Favre did win, because he had the #1 Defense in the entire league and Howard returned a punt.

hefter reported that the Kubiack deal is done and Arizona is finalizing a deal Lafleur

At this point, who is Kliff interviewing for?

At this point, who is Kliff interviewing for?

To hear Jordan Schultz and Russini tell it, he was the hottest and leading OC candidate out there, with plenty options. And it was pretty shameless the way they tried to prime the pump for the Ravens gig by putting it out there that Lamar and the receivers wanted Kliff. I'm still laughing at that. Tune in around November/December, when they'll link him to replacing Rudolph to guide the sleigh.

Kliff had some juice post-2024. He had little to none post-2025. When you have a stretch that includes some really bad offensive showings (including being shutout) - the injury excuse only goes so far (for some). 2025 was disastrous for Kliff.

We all make questionable life choices from time to time I suppose….

TJ couldn’t hack W&M so he had to go start his own university.

:p

(J/K. UVA is a spectacular school.)
