Onyx has gone missing. He didn't come home Tuesday night. He's never not come home.

I expanded my search and found him. He had apparently crossed Route 29, a major road. He was probably running from a predator and couldn't figure out how to get back past all that traffic. He was hiding in a storm drain and came out when I called for him. Home safe and sound. None the worse for wear, but a bit hungry. Much relief.

I cant let my cats outside, I just cant.

I understand the reasons some people do im not preaching i just couldn't take the stress.
 
I had a neighbor who had a cat that was strictly an Indoor cat, 100%. And one day when she opened the front door, the cat impulsively bolted out, vanished, and was never seen again.
So apparently even indoor cats are a risk for that. Though it depends on the cat's personality whether they try that.
But a chip in your pet is one option. Though some people aren't fond of that idea either.

Cats like privacy when they're dying so its not uncommon for an indoor cat to do that at the end of its life.

I once had a cat that did it.

It sucks because you get no closure but its part of being a cat lover.
 
Heisenberg - you are so right about them going off to die alone. I found my favorite black cat Felix in the bushes up against our house by the front door. It took a while to find him. It was like he wanted to be alone but wanted to be as close to us as possible when he went. We have had other cats just disappear.

I have seen pretty heated arguments about whether it is irresponsible to let cats go outside. My feeling has been, can you protect them almost entirely by never letting a cat outside? Sure. But is a cat going to be happy and fulfilled living exclusively indoors? I seriously doubt it. I'm not going to sit in judgment if anyone has made that choice, I just think you have to acknowledge, there is safety, and there is quality of life and there's no one perfect solution.
 
We've had to put down our last two dogs because they were suffering and I really don't want to go through that a third time. It would be nice if all my dogs going forward, would pass in the middle of the night peacefully in their sleep.

I currently have a very very old great Dane that im hoping goes peacefully in the night.
I too had to put down my last two and I agree it sucks.

Unfortunately their hips usually give out before their hearts do.

I believe a lot of that depends on how the cat was raised. Especially if it's been a Indoor cat from birth.
I've had a few cats that were exclusively, lifetime indoors cats. And while they loved to be spectators of the outdoors through the window,
they clearly had no desire to go outside.

If a door opened, they might come up and sniff the outdoor scents, but then turn around and run away (inside).
And if I were to pick them up and put them outside on the patio/porch, they would run back inside, actually terrified of the great outdoors,
seemingly appreciating the comforts and safety of the human crib.

Plus, some of my personal concerns of a cat that is a mixed indoor & outdoor cat, is that it seems more likely, that outside they pick up
parasites, fleas, mites, and disease. Which naturally translates into higher vet bills.

Cats of course need stimulation anytime they are awake, but I do my best to entertain that need, inside.
HDTV makes that a lot easier these days

Ultimate cat lady here...I have 6 little boxes of cremated remains and one my husband's friend buried in the back yard of my first house. I had a big covered deck with all of the neighborhood cats feeding and hanging out for 20 years, one crawled off in a snow storm to pass away, I never found him. I wanted to bring Cameron with me on the move, but I couldn't wrangle her, miss her every day.
I can usually tell, and schedule the appointment...but Vicki was a shock. She was diabetic, I had to give her 2 insulin shots every day. For 2 days I couldn't find her...thought she was playing "hide a kitty"...but then I went out to my screened-in porch and she had laid down behind one of the swivel rockers and given up. Lost my mind.
My 2 little black girls now are both about 14, love the porch and are still active and awesome.
I bought the household a X-mas present last winter, a PetSafe auto-scooping litter box. Best thing EVER.
