The Jayden Daniels Tracker

For me the most reassuring thing of what I have seen from JD this year is that he performs best in pressure situations. Compare this to someone like Cousins who put up crazy stats in garbage time, but often wilted in the 4th quarter, or primetime, or when there were playoff implications. He seems to instinctively grasp the being Bruce Wayne versus Batman moments.

Caleb Williams, what little I have seen, reminds me of Howell last year, with some "Wow! " throws, but too many sacks from trying too hard.

Daniels has been really impressive at the end of halves and games. Part of me wonders if that's because that's when the handcuffs come off.

To this point, there are certain players whose long-term success hinges on certain aspects of their games changing; staying in the pocket, using the whole field, not looking to scramble first, etc. Those habits are 60-minute, career winning habits. However, you can have the ability to win in 2-minutes that are almost the complete opposite of those! Focusing in on specific receivers, scrambling a lot... in small 2-minute drills under certain conditions (maybe more Prevent defense or some other characteristics as well), those tendencies can WIN.

Quinn - just today or yesterday - had a presser where he was asked what kinds of things he sees or wants to see development-wise from Daniels. Without being critical at all (if anything, totally complimentary), he basically alluded to these specific things. So it is an indication they do talk to him about scrambling less, staying in the pocket more, looking to pass for a bit longer as long as he *can* - but this conversation type CAN lead to MORE sacks. This is kind of what I have seen too. So, there is a lot of work-in-progress stuff happening, which will hopefully really bear fruit in the future, especially with a sharp hard-worker than Daniels appears to be (and is, by all accounts).

He's outplayed CW in probably 12 of 14 weeks. He should be OROY but Nix was catching up with him for a while.

This is cool but do you have one with QBR? I am curious mostly because I read a lot about all of the sacks. As far as I know, "RATE" is "passer rating" and does not do a good job of accounting for all non-passing stats that matter, like sacks, rushes, etc., and how the whole picture affects a team's likeliness to win. I imagine his QBR is quite high still in these Ws.

Also, for those talking about Nix catching up - I think Nix YPA was not that high; I remember reading a lot (and seeing some plays too) where Payton was clearly keeping it pretty simple on Nix. Maybe the playbook has expanded since, honestly I have not kept up well with the Broncos.

Nix was playing great the last few weeks. But last week he played like a rookie. Threw some terrible picks, then threw some TDs. I think Daniels has clearly been better over the entirety of the season.
 
Yeah Daniels is better through the whole season, but Nix has also played really well for the most part during the latter portion of the year. But IMO his slow start definitely leaves him trailing JD for OROY. Caleb is behind both of them.

Jayden’s QBR for the game was 66.2, a little below his season average of 67.9.

For the season, Jayden is 5th in the league in QBR, behind Lamar, Josh Allen, Burrow, and Kyler Murray, who is barely ahead of Jayden. I expect Jayden will finish 4th in the league in QBR, based on schedule. Unless he has a bad game that drags him down.

Yes, sometimes in a vacuum I hear people complaining about sacks; but those are not the worst outcomes in a play. INTs are usually worse, fumbles, etc. Sometimes taking a sack vs other outcomes are the better decision. Also, obviously, Daniels running is a big aspect that gets mixed reviews; some don't want the injury risk but Daniels himself and Kingsbury have commented on its utility and it being a part of "his game." QBR should help highlight all of that and how it plays in, alongside all of the other stats. Look at all of the fellow rookies in the top-10.... 0.
This is also representative of why I don't really think the current state of things has OROY all that close. Sure, it could change though.
 
I think the most impressive part of JD5s rookie season is that he almost never turns the ball over. He never fumbles.

He needs to work on scrambling and still trying to pass the ball while running but we've probably won a game or 2 just because of him not giving the opponent a short field.
 
Just wanted to note that there is a chance Jayden leads all QB’s in rushing. He’s only about 50 yards behind Lamar now and actually has twice as many rushing TD’s as Lamar.
