The Jayden Daniels Tracker

Those who were on ES during TopGolf-Gate may remember that I was sharply critical of Jayden's agent for re-tweeting / liking a tweet critical of the Commanders Top Golf outing / draft process. I caught some flak at the time from posters who brushed it aside as meaningless (and one in particular who insisted I was blowing things out of proportion).

Anyway, not to say this is related to that, but Jayden's mom recently became an NFLPA certified player agent and will ostensibly be taking over her son's representation moving forward. So the the old reps are out, Jayden's extension will be negotiated by Mama Bear, and the family will be saving the 3% commission on the contract and the ~10-20% on future endorsement deals.

I have yet to see this reported from any of the standard reputable sources like Washington beat reporters, Pellisario, Shefter, etc.

Color me suspicious.

Page out of Lamar Jackson’s book.

I don’t mind it, in theory.

20% on a future $250M+ deal is substantial

The mom agent presents an issue where you have an agent that maybe unrealistic. That seems evident in the Jackson saga in Baltimore

But it presents an advantage in that agents love pushing for free agency and top bidder.

Thankfully it’ll be years off.

Im of the opinion that you’re better off preparing for that, and not being caught in a situation where your only options are to dedicate a detrimental % of your salary cap to one player, and having no other option. In Adam Peters I trust. I expect him to have an idea of what can be done to without ruining the team, and also having a backup plan.

The guys played 9 games. I get he looks awesome. But AP’s mission is the organization and I expect him to be ahead of situations like this.

Jayden was at the Wizards game with his mom and minority owner Mark Ein. They get the game and it's not their first rodeo. They'll be on top of it.

Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually do a team friendly deal like what Mahomes did.

This is worth noting (just don't say anything out loud) ...

I actually think just 3 INTs for any rookie at this point is insanely good. Bo Nix, Caleb Williams, and Drake Maye all have twice that.

Going to be interesting how his performance changes as his ribs heal. Did the League catch on the Kingsbury? Or were his ribs the biggest issue?

Look forward to finding out.

I believe that the offensive performance versus Philly was primarily due to the following two factors:

-Facing a very good defense, both from an overall talent and coaching standpoint.

-The accumulation of injuries and the team being largely out of gas due to the schedule.

Against Pittsburgh they coulda/shoulda won despite the talent of the Steelers defense.

Breaking News- I think the majority of the concern from the fanbase is over-reactionary. If this Sunday shows a similar result then I reserve the right to alter my opinion.

Bear in mind, the O in Pittsburgh was given some short fields. They also struggled to get it into the endzone quite a bit. Personally, I do see some problems in the Kingsbury Offense right now. I think some of the tricks that were making it work have been exposed.

There are a couple of articles out now, talking about how a scrambling QB can make things hard on defenses, but if they can *force* the scramble and control it, it makes things *MUCH* easier.

I think that is what we've seen these past two weeks.

I am not saying every defense can implement that against this offense, but there is starting to be a blueprint to follow if there are no adjustments. Some of the adjustments may also be hard to magically occur, because Daniels scramble rate has been high for a long time (including college). It is something the coaches probably have to look at. The other thing you have to consider is, if they make the playoffs and lose quickly (due to playing "good defenses" - you hope they adjust when? I hope they are adjusting *now* and not counting on playing bad defenses to help them into the playoffs, you know what I mean? You have to be able to beat those defenses to reach the real goals.

There is a paywall, so I will excerpt, but here is the source of the next few lines (https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/st...rookie-quarterbacks-williams-daniels-maye-nix):

Independent of the injury, Daniels' play has been electric, though not without its warts. Any quarterback scrambling 25.9% of the time when pressured, as Daniels is, will inevitably leave some plays on the field as he drops his eyes and looks to run. By the way, that 25.9% is the highest number for any QB since 2009, which is as far back as we have data -- and second place is only 22.7% (Justin Fields in 2022). It isn't inherently bad to default to scrambling when pressured, especially when you're as impossibly fast as Daniels. But it is predictable and can leave meat on the bone.

Watch this play against the Eagles. It's third-and-6, and Daniels wisely climbs the pocket after it quickly gets muddy. There are two Commanders receivers -- running back Austin Ekeler and tight end Zach Ertz -- open for guaranteed first downs. It seems like Daniels sees them (or at the very least Ertz), given how his helmet scans the field. But Daniels pump-fakes and runs right into linebacker Nakobe Dean, who is focused on taking away the Daniels scramble over prioritizing coverage.

I think it's very difficult to *adjust* your way past teams with superior talent. All other things being equal (coaching, luck, officiating, etc...) the more talented team almost always wins. I think you'd be very hard pressed to argue that all of our losses vs. the Bucs, Ravens, Steelers, and Eagles didn't come at the hands of more talented teams.

I'm very skeptical DCs have suddenly figured out how to stop KK and JD. Maybe I'm wrong, but I chalk up struggling some against those teams to playing with inferior talent.

We will see down the stretch if we look a lot more like the first half of the season when we play less talented opponents.

I really hate DC sports radio so very much.
