The HC Dan Quinn Discussion Thread

Eh. I think you might have found a bunch of Eagles fan saying the same thing about Reid. And as it turned out, both sides might have been right. Reid has now won more games with KC then with the Eagles and is the winningest coach for both organizations. But he clearly wasn’t washed up.

As far as Tomlin goes, I’m not sure how many of the decisions on personnel have been his. I find it pretty impressive Tomin has kept the team competitive when they haven’t found a QB since Ben retired. And the last year or two of Ben wasn’t great either.

I am predisposed to like Tomlin, and I admit my bias, he’s a fellow alum of William and Mary. But I think he might reinvent himself a bit with a year off.

He wouldn’t be my first choice. But if he wants to coach, somebody is going to hire him. And I think a lot of fan bases will be skeptical. But I’d be very surprised if he isn’t success in his second stint.

Yeah, I remember. He told you to get off his couch once or something on campus 😂

Tomlin was there for 20 years and gained more power and influence every year. He ran that entire operation top to bottom. Did he personally make every single draft pick or signing? Of course not. But he chose the QB’s and OC’s that kept them in hell the past decade. It’s a real weakness of his and he he’s not going to require LESS power at his next stop. Like Harbaugh, the flaws only close-following fans are aware of are likely to rear their heads even stronger at a second stop where he insists on even more organizational control.

Reid is pretty unique because he is the genius offensive mind behind every offense he’s ever been the HC over. He reinvented not only himself but his scheme and playcalling. Guys like Harbaugh and Tomlin can’t do that.

A whole other conversation are Tomlin’s dinosaur tendencies in game management, clock management, etc. that have frustrated knowledgeable Steelers fans for years.

Not to mention the fact that Tomlin would have to be traded for. I’m very confident this whole conversation is basically pointless and he won’t be a real option for most teams IF he wants to coach again at all. I just couldn’t let that post about him slide with no comment.

Can you imagine if our HC hired someone as middling as Matt Nagy and then had the arrogance to call him potentially "the greatest OC ever?" This board would melt down.

The fact Washington drafted Daniels and wants him to modify IN PART how he is deployed to protect his longevity to me is not hubris on the part of the team or making a mistake with a pick.

MANY great college players that get drafted and become great pros have to adapt to the size, speed and across the board talent on defense in the league.

You aren’t playing UNC each week 🤣🤣🤣

Kliff spent 4 mostly forgettable seasons in Arizona trying to run his offense with Kyler Murray who was used in a way early on at his size that showed Kliff didn’t have the first clue about how to build a sustainable system in the NFL.

He showed coming here that there was no reflection on his failures with the Cardinals, he no doubt blamed the lack of results on other factors.

In some ways he reminds me of Spurrier or Chip Kelly who never recognized things that often work in college season to season are not suitable to that type of longevity or success up here in the big leagues.

Kliff may sit in LA and carry a clipboard for McVay and win something but it’s no validation of his ability to lead and be the one responsible for running the show.

Between that and Skateboo and Dart saying you'll see them in the SB soon, and Harabaugh more or less echoing the same the other day.

While I do think the Giants have the talent to be good. The amount of swagger that team has and odd hype is staggering. If they fail it will feel amazing.

If they fail SIP? You mean when they fail.

I hope so. Again, I just never knew Harbaugh was this full of himself. And adding all the adulation they seem to be getting from the local media and some from the national media, I think we will see the most arrogant 4-13 team in the history of the NFL.

But considering how unlikeable Harbaugh comes off, it makes my hatred for that team reach new heights.

It will be interesting to see their reactions moving into their second season after failing in 26.

The NY media is having a field day with them and that is to be expected. The national media is what is a bit surprising. They are all kind of fawning over them and that's fanning their egos.

When they showed Dart and Skat sitting together making the SB comments I could only think of Beavis and Butt-head doing their dub laughs

Once again, we are far afield from the actual thread topic - which is Dan Quinn.

I'm going to respond to this latest bashing of Kingsbury and then we need to get back on topic please. Kingsbury, who while far from perfect (few OCs are), should not be compared to someone like Spurrier whose offense's rankings never got out of the 20's. Kingsbury inherited an offense that was literally last in the NFL in both yards and points the year before. The next 3 successive seasons they got better every year, getting as high as 6th in the league in yards, and 11th in the league in points. It fell apart after Kyler Murray was injured in season 4.

Comparing him to Spurrier is just factually baseless. Chip Kelly? Maybe - because Kelly had top 5 offenses in Philly before it fell apart.

I have no problem with Kingsbury criticism, but the truth is, his offenses in Arizona were BETTER than anything Joe Gibbs could do in Washington in his 2nd stint but I don't hear anyone trashing Gibbs on that front.

Let's get back to the thread topic.

The hype is sort of like after the Comms made it to the NFCCG.

So, small difference I guess? They are picking 5 this year, we were picking last 4.

Harbaugh is the big driver but it is a combo. If DQ coached NY, would they be as hyped? I don’t think so. However, if Harbaugh coached here, it also would not be this big of a story.

DQ would not have drawn the same media hype as Harbuagh. He would have received hype but much different and more subdued.

Saw this when typed in Harbaugh and his ego:

John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Ravens in January 2026, has faced scrutiny regarding his leadership style. While some critics, notably former player Bernard Pollard, claimed his ego "destroyed" the team and led to its decline, others describe him as a driven, hardworking leader.

Arrogance after a NFCCG is a bit more earned than a 4-win season.
Are you sure??? Those 4 wins were amazing.

And didn’t you hear what skate boo boo said? He said he wanted to watch the super bowl only when they made it because he is so awesome and I never heard anything cooler. It basically guarantees 5 wins at least.

Man I really hate the unearned hype.

Wellp, let’s wish for some tasty schadenfreude then, although the best would just be having confidence that we will be really good. I can’t quite get there this minute. I can get to the idea that they will suck with Harbaugh more easily than us being great with DQ at this stage. We just don’t know enough about either combo in 2026.

I would expect the Giants to be better this year. Do I think the Comms will be better than in 2025? Just based on fewer injuries, yes. Based on the coordinators, I think overall, I do expect them to be better but the range of possibilities is so wide because of the amount of change. Offensive scheme is going to be to dramatically different to predict beyond “slow start offensively.” That would probably be my guess with highest confidence unfortunately.

my opinion on whether to retain Quinn for 2027 is going to be almost solely based on what the defense does this year.

Obviously if we have another disaster of a season like last year I'll want him relieved of duties regardless and if we make the nfc championship game again like two years ago its tough to fire a coach after that but if its because our offense carries us and our defense is abysmal again I think it'd warrant some consideration.

You simply cannot have your supposed specialty suck three years in a row.

You think if we hired Macdonald and every other factor were exactly the same including personnel and injuries that our defense would be this bad?

I dont.

We wouldn't be anywhere near what Seattle is but I'd be willing to bet we'd be middle of the pack somewhere and thats as much on Quinn as it is Whitt.

Im not giving him anymore passes on it, if you cant get your side of the football up to at least competent in three years, then excuses be damned you gotta go.

Agree. He's had a history of bad to mediocre defenses as a HC.

It's different enough to go with a non-offense HC where you got a young QB. But to do that and that defensive coach has a crap defense? That's a bridge too far for me.

He's setting himself up for a big in your face fall if it goes down that way.

And its also ignoring the fact that one of the excuses we keep giving him, personel or a lack thereof is at least partially to blame on him.

You dont think Peters is taking some of his cues from his newfound bosom buddy on defensive personnel?

Of course he is and you'd expect and hope they would work together and Peters would try to get Quinn what he needs to make his system work but when that system implodes the blame then goes to both the Gm and the coach equally.

I really like Daronte and think he's got a ton of potential and he may be the guy who saves Quinns job but honestly if he does and gets hired away a few years from now I'll be worried about the defense again and that is not something you should have to worry about with a defensive minded coach.

But thats a potential problem for tomorrow and if it does happen it'll mean we most likely had some success and I'll traverse that bridge when we come to it.
