The effort to re-sign Fletcher

Those are all great points Om and Bulldog...
 
Money is not a concern. We're still at about $9 mil below the cap. But it could be that he is delaying things until some restructures are done to help sign any additional FAs (this is just a guess and mere speculation).
 
Don't get me wrong. I want to see Fletcher back here selfishly.

I just don't want to lose out on the opportunity to shore up OL and CB and end up just where we were at the end of last season at those spots.

We need to improve. On defense, we can plan for upside on the line with the return of Jenkins and the further experience gained by Barry Cofield as a NT in this system.

At LB you have Riley and Kerrigan growing as starters.

But the secondary is a mess and may be the weakest area of the team right now.

I might even put the secondary ahead of the OL.

When you are considering Doughty and Gomes at free safety with their lack of footspeed you are starting off with significant issues.
 
If Fletcher signs elsewhere, it's because he no longer wants to play for the Skins, PERIOD. His reasoning could be that he wants to win now and another team could more readily provide that OR it could be something silly like we're not showing him enough respect with our offer.

I have no doubt we'd match ANY higher offer (which would be a shock) he'd receive so it's basically just a waiting game now. While our current offer may not be exactly what his agents want, you can bet your bottom dollar it's more than fair.

I certainly can't argue with you BD. I'm hoping there's some kind of plan to address the secondary, especially at Safety. I have to believe SOMETHING will be done to upgrade the back seven and we may have to make some tough cuts/changes to make it happen.

I think the coaching staff is going to have to walk a fine line between continuity and upgrading.
 
Let's face it, the worst move this team made in FA under Shanahan was the move for Atogwe. We learn now that coaches in STL said his performance had declined significantly in 2009 and that he started to slow down as cumulative injuries caught up to him.

Then he came here and got hurt almost right away.

Haslett should have been clued in enough on his former player to know the scuttlebutt about Atogwe's drop in performance in 2009 and 2010.

I can't help but wonder if Atogwe would have been given one more year to prove himself had Emperor Goodell stayed on his meds and NOT screwed with our cap at the last second.
 
No, I think the Redskins realized that 'having' Atogwe and Landry on the active roster never guaranteed that we would actually be seeing them out on the field.

There has to be a solution THIS YEAR to the BS in the secondary.

As with wide receivers that have been hurt every year in the past (Kelly, etc.), we can't wait any longer on guys.

If they are taking up significant cap space they need to be able to get on the field and perform.

If not, get them a bus ticket.
 
so...what's the latest update on getting Fletcher signed....are we still trying to get it done has anyone heard ?
 
checked out the Washington Post this morning ...no news yet of signing London ....we need to get this done at all cost in my opinnion. This might upset the whole defense if he were to sign somewhere else. Boy that salary cap thing from the NFL was costly, it come at a very bad time. I believe it has led us in directions we weren't ready for....and I also think the league did this on purpose, just because we took advantage or found a loophole that 30 other organizations did not do....
 
I have to wonder if Fletcher and the Redskins are trying to figure out the available money before striking a deal. The Redskins seem primed to go "nuclear" so this just might be a matter of waiting to see how the aftermath settles.
 
I'm sure Fletcher is testing the market, as he should, to get the best deal possible. This is likely his last contract at the playing level (probably has a future in coaching), so its got to be enough to set him up for the rest of his life managed properly. I'm sure he is shopping his services around. I can see him giving the Redskins a little bit of a discount if other offers aren't TOO much more, but if someone blows our offer out of the water, it might be bye-bye Fletch.
 
...and taking LL's last thought to its necessary conclusion, if some other team comes along and makes London an offer that blows ours out of the water, we need to be smart enough to extend a hand, thank him genuinely for his amazing contribution to our franchise, ask him to please consider coming back here when his career is over to both be retired as a Redskins and maybe join the coaching staff, issue a warm and sincere public statement of thanks, and let the man go.

The Redskins cannot afford sentimentality. Not even with London Fletcher.
 
I don't expect anything to happen till after next weeks owners meeting. If Snyder and Jones can get the majority of owners to back them on the cap issue, we may have enough leverage with the league, and regain some of the cap we lost.
 
the LB market is saturated this season and everyone's waiting for someone else to make a move and set the market value for everyone else. it's kind of like signing first round draft picks, noone wants to be the first because they want to see what others can get so they can ask for more.

once lb's start getting signed fletcher will go. i'm sure he has 2-3 other teams lined up with his agent, and when a market value is established they'll get their offers quick and make a decision.
 
I wouldn't say its saturated, but for some reason there isn't a lot of movement. Curtis Lofton remains unsigned which is mind-bottling.
