I have to have a hard cover. A lot of folks say soft or hard doesn't matter to a determined thief but my stuff just feels safer under a hard one. My jeep has a soft cover with a tear, so I'll replace that this spring with a hard one.

I currently have a BakFlip on my F-350 which has been solid for five years.

I'll also check out the Tonneau hard covers. Everyone in the Jeep forums swear by Tonneau and they have a hard cover that rolls up which sounds cool.

I have a BakFlip on my Ram and love it. They support up to 400lbs so you can walk on it. Doesn't hurt that it looks great too.

I've never walked on mine but mine is 7 years old and still going strong.

Tonneau has a hard roll up one that I'm looking at for my gladiator. It might be easier for the wife to open. I'll gladly buy another BakFlip though, if the roll up isn't secure enough for me.

There is another issue. A year or 2 ago the computer was malfunctioning. It would read the truck was misfiring and tell the transmission to not shift out of 1st to avoid stalling. First time I limped it directly to the auto shop where new plug wires were installed and I was informed of the problem, I thought I needed a tranny. Then it did it again on the way home from the dog park, the next morning it was shifting fine. A third time I just pulled over and turned it off for 15 seconds. This reset the computer and it hasn't happened since. Still because of this I am limited to local driving, I don't trust it to take to Harpers Ferry.

Originally I called a body shop and he said they can't the bed. Then I called a junk yard and they had no dark grey beds, it's a common color and I figured it was only a matter of time but then I stopped calling. The rust is on the deck, a few holes that I cut away the rust and spray painted. Then are now about the size of my fist and close together. Then I found another one a few feet away, I could put my finger through the deck. I got a steal plate about 2' x 4' that I put over the compromised section. It's fine for trips to the dump or yard waste, but I can't load it with gravel or firewood, I had to put the wood around the area.

So given all of this would you fix this truck? Shops can cut away the rust area and patch the deck of a truck bed? Now it's loud, I just prey it's a muffler and not the cat. Not sure I even want to invest in a muffler.

Most shops don't like doing rust work. You need a buddy with a welder LOL If ya don't trust it mechanically, then walk away. I was lucky when I got my Tacoma, it only had 117K on it in 2017 when I picked it up. It's a 2005 and has 198K on it now with little to no real issues.... I expect it to out live me. Has had a code that comes and goes for the secondary O2 sensor. Doesn't effect it's performance, and i don't care about a trouble light being on... LOL Just did SW Fl to NY and back never giving it a thought. Been a ford guy all my life, have had 2 Rangers over the years, an F-150, and numerous cars. That being said, after an FJ Cruiser, and now the Tacoma, there's no going back for me.

They are kind of a PITA to open. Mrs Skinsfan  can if she has too, but it's tough sledding.

I wanted a Tacoma when I purchases my last truck, but they were literally twice the price on the used market for obvious reasons. Both Rangers have been tremendously reliable, this one's just old. But it has no rust below and only has 140,000 miles and serves my needs for now.

Thinking about it, wouldn't a bed liner work ? You'd have to remove your flat patches, but you could use some strips of sheet metal riveted in the lower flat and upper flat areas of the deck letting a bed liner still conform properly while reinforcing the deck itself. Would look good, and stuff would slide in and out. You could pull it off for under 350 bucks. With only 140K, it's hard to walk away from. Sorry, I can't help myself. It comes from a lifetime of fixing stuff. I don't own new stuff, the newest being my 2018 Triumph, and the 05 Tacoma. Everything else I use around the house is at least 30 years old...

I got a much smaller version of that, shaped like this one to fit the bed, for the stressed area that I referenced earlier. My size was wrong, it's perhaps 18" x 30" or so which is big enough to cover the area. This allows me to utilize the truck for dump runs or yard waste but I can't put a load of gravel or firewood. I kind of looked at it as a temporary fix, do you think these will take care of the problem for several years provided I cut the rust out of the new holes and paint?

That's why I'm drivin' the wheels off my '04 Canyon. It's getting close to 157K, and it's gotten pummeled by pine sap over the years, but it's a great truck and I don't drive much. (If I make trips home to VA, I rent a car...AARP is a beautiful thing. )

In our driveway currently sits a 2004 Ranger, a 2017 Civic with 207,000 miles and a 2019 Kona with 97,000 miles. So naturally now I'm thinking about replacing the Kona. It's my wife's car and serves our needs for a road trip. It also gets great mileage and is small and easy for my wife as a daily driver. But the ride is stiff and I find it's not all that great for road trips. So she's OK getting a larger SUIV, probably a CRV.
