The All Things Terry Thread

I'm sorry, but just because someone doesn't deny a claim or "correct the narrative", doesn't mean the claim/narrative is true.

I am going to agree to disagree with that logic, for those who think that's what it means.
 
A few thoughts:

1. This coming season, I'd prefer Terry on this team than DK on this team.
2. That might not hold true for the next 3-4 seasons.
3. AAV is a completely useless measure of anything and I have no idea why anybody uses it. That includes agents and players. But they care about it for ego purposes.
4. Nobody "won" or "lost" this negotiation.
4a. Everybody lost because it took so long and got contentious.
4b. Everybody won because it's done and they can move forward.
5. We'll see the final numbers when they are reported, but I'd be willing to bet this is similar to Metcalf in that it's probably a 2 year deal with a lot of fluff.
6. I don't begrudge Terry his money. But I don't like the way he went about it, and that's going to stick with me. I was planning on buying a #17 jersey after he retired. Will I now? Who's to say.
7. I think the fans taking a victory lap on twitter underscores that there were plenty of people, some unknown percentage but large, that just wanted to pay Terry whatever he wanted both because he's a fan favorite and they want him on the field.

Lastly, with him signed, the entire season almost immediately feels different. It's amazing what one player does, but think of:

Terry + Deebo + Noah Brown + Ekler + Ertz with Lane/Bill/Rodriguez as reserves

vs.
Deebo + Noah Brown + Ekler + Ertz with Lane or some random WR playing 60%+ of snaps.

It's a huge difference. Everybody can go back to their assigned Roles.

And I'm assuming Ekler gets the majority of RB snaps early in the season as they work Bill into the rotation. I could be wrong about that.

Typically takes about a week. The agent has to get their glory first before gory details get posted and you find out this is a 2 year deal worth $50m and an easy out after 2026.

(That's a guess. I wouldn't be shocked if that was the truth.)

If the reporting was entirely false AND it was painting your client in a bad light, they would correct it.

They couldn't correct it because, it seems, the reporting was true.

It's kindof irrelevant at this point.

Might be a week for Spotrac but I’d be shocked if we don’t get details by Wednesday. Today is for allowing Terry a victory lap. Tomorrow is for cuts. Next up, contract details.
 
Just listening to the Keim podcast.

He’s saying that he’d heard the deal was less than Terry asked for, but more than Washington initially offered. So a middle ground was reached.

He also speculated that the AAV could be about $29m per year when it all shakes out. Didn’t say he knew, just a speculation. But Keim’s speculations are usually pretty good

Eh, it might take a few more days. Mostly because it doesn't matter to anybody but football salary cap nerds, and it's mostly meaningless even to us (I'm one of them) until next off-season anyway.
 
Now that the deal is done and it appears that no one did anything highly unusual in coming to this deal to the detriment of player or team, let's look forward to winning the opener instead of worrying about DK Metcalf and others.

Personally, DK Metcalf got traded largely because he sulked in 2024 and has been a player that has show a selfish streak during his career.

Glad to see the saintly Steelers who ( according to Florio and all the ESPN idiots never make any personnel mistakes) have both Metcalf and flaky quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the fold for 2025.

I am sure this team is going to challenge Baltimore for the division and go deep into the playoffs :lift:

You answered your own point. AAV is easy math and as deep as most people wish to dive.
 
Again, who cares? We are not owners of the franchise and we are not the players' agent.

It appears they came to a deal that was somewhere in the middle perhaps a little more to Terry's side.

But it is not the type of deal being bandied around in the press 2 months ago that would have handicapped the Commanders going forward.

I question whether he's the starter or not. They're not saying. They are insinuating the reason he didn't play on Saturday is his shoulder is banged up, or he would have played.

So I can't quite get a read on who's going to start week 1 yet. I honesty don't care that much. I'd like it to be Bill, I think he offers more explosiveness than CRod. But they might use the power/toughness of CRod and then the explosiveness of Ekler, and Bill could be the rotational backup guy.

I could see this playing out in multiple ways, and they aren't really saying what they are going to do. Which, I applaud. No reason to tip off the Giants.=

I get the fans using it. I don't get the agents/players caring about it.

I care very much how much we are on the hook for in his age 32 and 33 seasons because I do not like the odds of him being productive in those years. 30 and 31? No worries at all. Beyond that is shaky and I DO expect us to be in a Super Bowl window. I don’t want upwards of $30M tied up in a receiver who puts up 650 yards and 4 TDs because that significantly hampers those chances.

I'm starting Bill in our BGO league so I need him to start week 1 :p

I think it will be RBBC for the first couple of games until Bill takes over as RB1.
 
In his age 31/32 season Art Monk had 86 catches, 1186 yards and 8 touchdowns and made the pro bowl.

Not everyone declines at the same rate. Cliff Branch who ran a 4.3 back in the 1970's and 80's was productive in the league at 35.

Of course there are exceptions and I’m not going to bother debating them all. Studies show receivers peak around 28 and have a significant drop about 32. I’d prefer the team not tie up large sums of money on negative EV bets when it comes to contracts.

Even if you choose not to subscribe to that, what about everything else?

Were the insiders making everything up and Terry’s words and actions all for show?
