3. Get traded (not going to happen, but while it's a possibility I'll list it)
4. Declare he won't play so we can send him home to pout.

I think a deadline is coming. It has to be if we don't have something worked by the first week of the season any talks stop until after the season.

This is Terry’s Kobayashi Maru.

The no-win scenario and his agent has backed him into a path that doesn’t have a graceful face-saving off ramp. The team holds all the cards.

He either signs for a bunch less than he wants and is forced to admit his true market value.

He could agree a trade, but it’s clear what his market value is. It’s been pretty established the the league execs have him pegged at a low range he’s not happy with. There might be a team out there desperate enough to throw money at him, but it’s not likely to be a contender. So if he wants a chance at a chip, we’re the best option.

Or he plays this season under current contract, but unless he absolutely balls out and wins Super Bowl MVP he’s only going to be in the same position or worse next year…only a year older.

If he continues to hold out and misses games, he starts losing cash in big chunks. Lose enough of them and it starts negateing a big chunk of any pay rise he might get. Plus, if we ball out without him, it weakens his hand. Even holding out just two or three games would also affect his stats for the year. He’s only just snuck over 1000 yards last year, so not playing could see him break that streak. Is anyone going to pay a 31 year old WR coming off an 800 yard season, with a probable drop in TD production too, even the $24m that’s being bandied around this year?

As a perception most won’t see it as a shortened season, they’ll just look at the raw numbers and see inevitable decline. It would be even worse if, God forbid, he suffered even a minor injury to drop those numbers futher.

As VOC said, likely his only leverage left is to sit the first two games and pray we stink. That’s a pretty big gamble though, as those games could be two of the easiest on our schedule.

His best option is to sign now.

Even taking that out of consideration, what he’s already done isn’t worth his asking price.

Not all teams do this though. I think Aiyuk was signed after holding out, maybe week 3? And I think the 9ers caved at least somewhat, the details are hazy in my mind.

Terry’s numbers show he averages 66 yards a game over his career.

Not to burst too many bubbles but in two regular season games against the Eagles he got owned by rookie cornerbacks.

He was damn near invisible.

He wants a top 4-5 deal but his catches, yards, etc over his career point to a consistently good player not a game breaker.

I am still a bit confused how a guy with 80 catches and under 1100 yards as career high is threatening to hold out for a top salary.

Just for reference Justin Jefferson’s 5 years in NFL have produced 1400, 1616, 1809, 1074, 1533 yard seasons.

Jefferson’s least productive season where he was injured produced numbers comparable to Terry’s best.

And one would figure with Daniels at quarterback his numbers would have really popped in 2024 to separate what he did with San Howell or Taylor Heinicke.

His endurance looks iffy though. He needed to stop along the walkway to catch his breath. Methinks he needs to be made to run laps. A lot of laps. Maybe 30 million.

That may be true. Although I suspect most teams and players don't want the distraction in the middle of the season.

I think you're referencing me, thought I would love to know what the "C" is? Voice of ... Calm? Calamity? Consternation? Consiglieri?

But yeah, he's worked himself into an unwinnable position.

I do think there is a component of Peters having to help him not look like a complete ass which would be helpful all the way around. You don't want to sign him and then also put a dunce cap on him and make him stand in the corner and point and laugh at him.

So, if they can agree on something "real," they can always put fluffy crap in at the end to make them not look like idiots. Yeah, it's an olive branch, but eh.

This is all dependent on figuring out something that will work as an extension for both sides.
