The All Things Terry Thread

When first team was in we averaged 18.5 yards a carry when rushing. I figure that will continue so I am not worried about our receivers.

Nicki, from the WP and now the Athletic, Schefter and Rapoport al reporting a variation of he wants at a minimum DK's contract but more likely north of it.

Those are good sources. There was a day years ago when Rapoport wasn't a good source but he's getting much better over the years. And Schefter alone is a legend. He's rarely wrong.

I agree with your point which if this was all nonsense, Terry's side would leak otherwise. The Terry's side is certainly willing to leak plenty about the team's offer and how they feel about it -- but nothing about what they are asking for and nothing to contradict Schefter and company.

Usually, where there's smoke, there's fire. There has been plenty of smoke from many people, including some who rarely speculate without some direct insider knowledge, about Terry basically getting big mad because the team doesn't want to pay a 30 year old receiver top 4 WR money.

And then also being upset about the fact that he's 30 (or will be very soon), that he'd be 31 when a new contract kicks in, and that it's a very real part of the Commanders thought process.

Then you combine that with Terry doing a press conference and making public comments which have all mostly sounded like whining, and yeah...there's probably a fire somewhere.

Yeah but it's VERY easy for rumors to spiral out of control, coming from the one initial false claim. I've read studies about how easy misinformation is to spread in today's social media world.

I just don't take any speculation and all that crap as more than that, and I don't really base opinions of mine on those things. I know many people do and that's fine, but I don't.

We're talking about it because there's nothing else to talk about lol. I mean the last few pages are pretty much the same thing over and over. We're all just dying for something at this point.

It all trends in the same direction though, which with this sort of reporting usually matters

Okay, and what’s your opinion if he is indeed asking for $33-34M/yr+ (as is being consistently reported, and not denied by his camp)

Just pretend for a minute that it’s true. What’s your thought process?
 
I feel like if the reports about Terry’s ask weren’t true, they’ve had plenty of time to correct it - yet they haven’t.

Pair that with what Terry has said and his actions, and it’s pretty safe to say the reports must be pretty darn close to accurate.
 
Michael Ginnetti from Spotrac was on with Grant and Danny and put together a TM contract.

Here are the highlights from his work:

- 3yr $82.5 mil ($27.5 per)
- It's their mathmatical value for a player around his age and with all player data
- It's a fair market price for everything considered
- To go above and beyond that would be a cave situation by the team
- Fair market price is where these deals stay with a SB contending team
- Age does trend contracts downward unless the player is some unicorn which TM is not
- The $82.5 mil does factor in certain things above the normal aged player (giving TM some consideration)
- This contract would include $50 mil guarenteed over 2 yrs which tracks with the teams $25 mil/yr
- They could add a year of fluff taking it to $30 and make TM and his agent feel like they won
- He said he thinks the franchise tag next year is going to approach mid $30's so probably not something the team would want to do (responding to play out this years contract and then tag him next and whether it'd be cheaper)
- He thinks TM is going to have to come down (cave) and Michael stands with the team on this one

Don't pay him, and let him play his contract out. Then franchise tag him the next year or two if he's still producing at a high level.

I have absolutely zero doubt that he will not be playing week 1, at least not by his choice.
 
At the end of the day, whatever the actual number is, it certainly appears like Terry wants more money than he should be asking for at this point. He is almost certainly being unreasonable.

I can’t imagine why the team would not pay him fair market value if that is really what Terry wants, but the only thing that makes sense here is that he wants more than fair market value. Otherwise, this was probably over weeks ago.

Yeah, there would be a certain irony if he waited years for us to be competitive and then priced himself off the team if we do win it.
That's the kind of decision that would likely haunt him (albeit while spending his millions!)

It boggles my head because I can't conceive of a life where I have the kind of money he already has! I feel like my head would be on establishing a legacy at this point. Help the team win a chip and cement your place in the teams ring of fame.

Agree. And, age is clearly the heart of the debate. And its not like Terry is trying to hide from the fact -- he's commented on it. I listened to the Spotrac guy on 106.7 and he also doubled down that 30 plus year old WRs don't get the same money, the drop off is established when you get past 30.

Terry wants to be treated like this is his 2nd contract like he's 27. Or wants the team to simply ignore the data about 30 plus year old WRs because he says he's going to age beautifully and if they love him as much as they claim they do -- they should just take his word for it.

This likely remains the biggest sticking point because it frames the argument for Washington. McLaurin will turn 30 on Sept. 15, which means he'd be 31 when an extension begins.

The Commanders rely heavily on analytics, and the numbers aren't kind to receivers at that age. According to ESPN Research, over the past five seasons only three receivers 31 years or older have played at least 10 games and averaged 70-plus receiving yards per game; six have averaged 60-plus.
