The All Things Terry Thread

They aren’t rewarding this dummy with a trade this year, it sets a terrible precedent. If he were to be traded it would be after they Franchise Tag him next offseason, at the earliest.

Trading him would be a punishment, not a reward. :)

Seriously, though, I wouldn't be too concerned about the precedent if they trade him. Not many players are valuable enough to even consider holding out in this way, and he is a holdover from the previous regime who is likely on the downside of his career. It'd be more in the category of cutting their losses--especially if he's unwilling to take the field this year on his current deal.

Of course you’d rather not use the tag because it all hits the cap at once, it’s inefficient. But it’s still less than he’s demanding per year so it is a tool they have at their disposal if necessary, even if it doesn’t allow them manipulate the cap the way they’d prefer.

Minor quibble: while Daniels is on his rookie deal, I actually think they're more in the mode of front loading contracts, or at least paying in full as they go.

The key point is that the tag can only be applied to one player at a time, and it saves the most cap space when applied to a young, elite player in a position of need for the team, like Parsons in Dallas. If the Commanders apply the tag to McLaurin next year, it won't actually save them much, if any, cap space compared to his market value, and the tag would no longer be available to help them negotiate with, say, Luvu.

No team in the NFL would give him the contract he’s asking for, so a trade wouldn’t even help him

I agree that no other team should be willing to pay what he's reportedly asking. But it seems plausible to me that he could get more from another team than from the Commanders.

I think this is a lot worse. Arrington never deserved the fan adoration he got. If fans would’ve seen what he was like behind the scenes, a selfish diva who didn’t care about anything but Lavar, they wouldn’t have adored him.

Terry has always been the real deal. A team guy who would do anything he was asked if it helped the team have a better chance of winning. That’s why his actions the past few months are getting such a strong reaction.
I’ve said Lavar is easily the most disappointing player in my time as a fan of the team.

Any player who frustrates Gibbs to the extent he had to say ā€œI’ve talked to Lavar more than any player I’ve ever coachedā€ needs to get their head checked.

Sorry, it's time to shit or get off the pot. Either get to work and play the final year of your contract, or sit the bench. Good guy, good tude, good work ethic, but this whining that you're getting offered 28 MILLION instead of 30 MILLION is getting old.

Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos’ Courtland Sutton, who is around the same age as McLaurin and also has some statistical similarities, recently signed for $23 million a year.

The Commanders would likely tack on a premium based on McLaurin’s off-field value, but when factoring in his age and the other impending contracts they’ll soon have to pay, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the team has set a maximum range of $27 million to $28 million a year in average annual value for McLaurin.

Will McLaurin’s activation off the PUP list move things along?

We’ll see. All it means for now is he passed his physical and was medically cleared by the team to begin his ramp-up for the season. That leaves him and the Commanders’ offense less than three weeks to reconnect before the season opener.

It seems unlikely that McLaurin would sit out games if a deal isn’t done by the start of the season. He would lose a paycheck for every game he misses, and could be subject to additional fines at the team’s discretion.

What comes next?

Either McLaurin and the team find a way to bridge the cap before Sept. 7, or McLaurin will likely face a difficult decision in the coming days: accept whatever offer is on the table from the Commanders, or play out his current deal and become a free agent in March. Taking the latter route would be a gamble; another big season could put him up for a somewhat significant payday. His age might always be a sticking point, though. Would another team offer him more in 2026, when he would be set to turn 31, than the Commanders are offering now? It’s an open question.

Not that i want to start a rumor. I really have a friend in Vegas and on the local sports talk they are really looking at sending a 4th and Jakobi Myers for TM. Raiders are desperate for a reciever. Has anyone heard anything on this or is this just fans talking?

NO way we should do that. Let him sit/play out his contract just to show you don’t do our team like this.

I watched Quinn's press conference, he got a little testy (rare for him) with the Terry question saying he's not going to play the game of wheres Waldo with Terry.

Yeah this shit is starting to boil. There has to be some kind of resolution soon, one way or another.

I was pumped watching the game Monday because everything had been so negative with the Pats game and Terry stuff. We needed some good vibes and Jayden delivered them, but it’s already buried under this ridiculous nonsense again. And add in the BRob situation, which I view as a positive but still a distraction, and I can definitely envision the conversations between Quinn and Peters getting more stressed as they try to sort how this is affecting preparation for the season.

We are reaching a critical mass.

Whatever the hell that means

Pretty normal part of injury recovery is working up to passing a conditioning test before you can practice, when you have a real injury in play.

Now, we all operated like the ankle injury was fake, a loophole the team was allowing so that Terry didn’t get fined every day while they tried to negotiate in good faith. And that’s probably true, but I think it’s more that he has an ankle ā€œthingā€ that he always has that he usually just does maintenance on in the offseason. But it’s enough to plausibly sit out while holding in, rather than being totally made up. Every vet in the league has this sort of thing they have to be careful with every offseason, years of getting beat up. Taking care of your body is part of lasting a long time in this league, but they all have chronic ā€œthingsā€ they can technically practice and play through.

So he probably could’ve been practicing this whole time with caution and vet days off like the other older guys get, but now he has to go through the steps of showing he’s in football shape before practicing, and they’re still probably slow-playing it for him while he comes to terms with the fact that he’s not getting what he wants and is coming off PUP anyways.

What are the specific steps of the ramp-up protocol for a bruised ego & hurt feelings?
