The All Things Terry Thread

I know there are numerous examples of players demanding a trade and then signing anyways. I’m not sure any of those examples are apples to apples though.

I’ve been trying to think if any of those scenarios were similar from both a leverage and talent standpoint. Lamar, Chase, Jones and Garrett - all elite players ranked at or near the very top of their positions.

3 of those guys got what they wanted, with Jones ultimately netting less in the end - even though he ended up getting a large deal thereafter.

But Terry is in a unique situation where not only is he not elite, but the team has the FT at its disposal for significantly less than what he’s asking for in a LTD.

Are there any examples of a player of Terry’s caliber and leverage, pulling a stunt like this? And did it work out in their favor?

He’s escalated this to a point now where he’ll either have to humble himself like Trey, or take it all the way like Bell and Riddick. I’d bet everything I own that the team will not pay him a DK or DK+ deal without funny money to make it sound good, but inevitably pay way less. He’s overplayed his hand and I just don’t see a way for him save face. At best maybe the team caves and gives him a raise for 2025 and they play this game again come 2026.

But I’ll take the counter argument there (though I don’t feel strongly either way or have evidence either way, which is great)

I think it’s reasonable to think what the team is doing is setting realistic expectations here. They kept quiet - when the past regime would leak false information to hurt a persons reputation if they were in a bad spot with them. They (supposedly) offered a fair deal, and are holding to their values in the face of overly unrealistic expectations by an unseasoned agent and terry. They let him come into the PUP so he can avoid the 50k per day fine for holding out, as a favor to him while they wait for him to get his head straight.

I realize the players generally (at least publicly) are for players getting the $ they think they’ve earned. But I bet there’s a number of them that are looking at last season, thinking there’s a real shot here, putting in max effort (lol we hope) to make the most of this coming season… and here’s the team making a reasonable extension offer, and a player under contract refusing to participate because 27 mil a year to play a game isn’t enough for him.

I see room here to argue the team feels great about how they handled it, and what it means for the culture (even if they’d prefer to not be in this situation at all)

I have actually been encouraged by one aspect of this drama (would you please stop yelling at me).

It’s clear there are adults in charge of the front office and that projects such a sigh of relief in me for the future. I have every faith AP will make the best decision for the team and that is way, way more important to us than getting Terry back this year. Just as the coaching staff (and Jayden) have created a culture that attracts other players in the league, AP is establishing a reputation that other agents will understand for years to come. He will be fair but won’t be bullied.

And yes, I still think Terry will sign an extension before the season because that’s his best interest. And yes the team is better with him. And no we don’t need him to contend.
 
Bram referenced on his podcast, that he gets inside info about things but can't share all he knows. Then later referenced, he didn't say its what he directly knows but not sure one way or another, Terry wanting J. Chase type money, 100 million plus --not sure if he meant guaranteed. But he didn't say that's what he directly heard so not sure if he was hinting he did, or is speculating based on Schefter.

Here's a side-by-side comparison. Yes - Tyreek is a year older and has more wear and tear on him - but statistically he is a superior WR. I don't see a one for one straight up swap being something Miami would agree to. We would have to throw in other players or a pick.

That's an oddly good sign. The Harris hug almost makes me wonder if much of Terry's anger is performative.
 
No way I'm trading McLaurin for Hill. Hill's attitude was terrible at the end of last year and everyone is aware of very serious off the field problems he has had. Agree with the notion that his speed is a massive reason he's been so good. Age is starting to catch up with him though. Washington has all the leverage with Terry. The quicker he realizes this the better this will be.

What's wrong with him playing this year and franchising him after that? We still get him for at least 2 more years. Peters may be ready to move on by then anyway. If he sits, he sits. I am disappointed in Terry honestly but cannot imagine he's that petulant. Ball is in our court boys.

In my best library voice;

It’s clear Adam is trying to set the tone with these negotiations, I applaud him in that. But, these negotiations should’ve happened months ago, and I’m concerned that if he really likes to wait until August to handle contracts, he’s setting himself up for a lot of headaches in the future.

The price increases as the schedule moves right, and we should be proactive signing our young guys sooner than later. Mikey and Quan gonna need deals unless we’re looking to be a comp pick draft team… Tunsil too. Jayden probably after year 3/4, 5th year option gonna make his number exponentially higher.

(whispers) can’t win a superbowl this year without Terry bruh…
 
It sounds great to say 'these negotiations should've happened months ago' - but the fact of the matter is, if a player and his agent are demanding an outrageous deal, and the team communicates there is no way they will ever approach those kinds of numbers, there is nothing to negotiate unless said agent/player are willing to move from that position. Remember - the team doesn't HAVE to do a 3rd deal - period. He is under contract and they can extend that by a year if they want.

Why would the price increase with time? If anything, Terry's being petulant and trying to negotiate in public isn't exactly a great tactic to motivate the team to move towards his desired #.

You have to wonder if fans are giving him the business. I know many will just be polite - because they want an autograph, or don't want to be rude. But there are definitely some fans who are likely giving it to him full bore 'Don't you want to win a championship?'.... 'Are you all about the $$ bro?', etc...

How do we know when the negotiations actually started? Maybe there was an initial attempt but the differences were so great that only the drama was saved for later, after the more realistic contracts were signed.

(whispers) we can too win a superbowl this year without Terry. Jayden made D.Brown look good.

We can’t win a superbowl without Jayden.
 
This has already been suggested but the more I marinade on it the more I am really starting to think that the reason Terry is doing what he is doing is because he is worried that he will be shown to not be as valuable if he doesn’t get a lucrative contract extension now.

I am anticipating us being a prolific offense that spreads the ball around. Everybody’s gonna get a piece of this pie.

Maybe I’m wrong 🤔
 
He's not going to get the extension unless he starts singing a different song. He plays under his current contract or doesn't get paid and can stay home. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Peters is focusing on other things currently. Peters isn't going to cave to McLaurin's demands.
