The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Try not to take this personally. I'm frustrated with Terry and his agent's decisions, too. It doesn't really change who Terry is or who he has been.

In the abstract, we often say that we support a player maximizing their worth. We even chided one poster horribly last year for suggesting a player should take less to be a part of this team. We really gave that guy hell when he said players should sacrifice financially for the sake of the team. So here it is playing out in real time. Terry and his agent are asking for what they think is their due. Adam is trying to reel him back in. We don't know if Washington is being a Scrooge or if Terry's side is being outrageous. I personally suspect Terry's side is the one asking for too much, but I haven't seen a single number from either side.

So, let's relax and let it play out. Feel what you got to feel, but no one is actually the bad guy here.
 
I, for one, see neither side as the ‘bad guy’. Terry is trying to get compensated at a level that he believes he is worth. I see the team as not being interested in paying more than they believe he is worth going forward into the future. Both are well within their rights to feel that way. The best result will come if both sides are not entirely comfortable with the landing spot but are able to live with it.
 
I agree that none of this is personal and we’ll all get over it once it’s over, and that guys should try to maximize their worth—sometimes that includes failing first and having to compromise at your actual value. That’s all fine.

But I also agree with the people making the logical point that you can’t state as part of your value resume that you’re the “non drama guy” while being the drama guy. Leverage what you can for all you’re worth, but your rep can’t continue to be “he’s the quiet workmanlike everyman of the people who just does what he’s asked, not one of those divas”. That’s part of the cost of maximizing your value, the same way that maximizing your value by job hopping in the regular world (something that almost must be done to stay current with market salaries) is totally understandable but still prevents you from being labeled as loyal to any particular company or vision. Not bad (in fact many would say it’s good), it just is. It’s not unfair to be described by your actions, for any of us.

I think the reason I am frustrated with Terry is his comments about age, and I suspect other people are too. When he says that age shouldn’t factor into the contract because he’s playing well now, that’s just a fantastical statement that isn’t grounded in reality. And it tells me that he isn’t negotiating reasonably. OF COURSE age factors into any contract for an older player, in any sport.

I’ve thought all along this ties back to his agent. It happened during the last contract negotiations. Knowing all we know about Terry, he’s not about the drama personally. He had plenty of opportunity to speak out and be dramatic and never once did. Not until last week. I gather he’s a loyal guy and his agent got it done for him the last time, so why expect any different this time? I think he’s playing this out the way his agent is advising.

So yeah, it’s literally nothing personal at all. But his agents strategy now has many of us who love this guy and want/expect him to retire here, having second thoughts. Not about his character, but simply how much of our cap his contributions are worth in the future.

As much as I love the guy, it would be very hard for me to stomach still owing him a bunch of guaranteed money come the 2027 season and thereafter. That’s really what it boils down to.
 
I'm NOT advocating for this... but the biggest troll job in history would be to sign Deebo to an extension today.

Outside of Terry's Eastern Motors rant--it's been relatively quiet. The Commanders have said NOTHING in the media. I think this gets done sooner rather than lat er. It's not nearly as acrimonious as Hendrickson in Cincinnati.
 
I don't like this attitude from McLaurin, and it's the second time. Either fire the agents, get a deal done and move on; or just move on. I'd take a draft pick from the Jets, Cleveland or Tennessee. Perhaps McLaurin would be happier playing there.
 
Terry deserves to be paid.

The sides need to find a way he gets max dollars for 2 years before we have to resign Daniels.

Absolutely not. Terry does not get max dollars. He is too old and not as good as the top guys.

He deserves to be paid what he’s worth, is what I’d amend it to. And if he and his agent are satisfied with that (or can negotiate a structure that satisfies them) then there will definitely be a deal to be made.

But why the hell would you pay him what Jamar Chase is paid, as an example? Think about the downhill effects of that later on, when other players are negotiating with us. It’s a business.
