This is a good point. Terry, Deebo, Luke, Noah Brown, Lane. That’s a very solid top 5. Fant is sure to be better than our WR6.

Veterans report tomorrow. Hopefully we hear something about a Terry signing today.

lol this is even funnier bc it was obviously fake even the day it was reported, the plane did not “turn around” at all. Peters & Co. also had an in-person interview set with Aaron Glenn that day in Detroit that they kept. Lake Lewis is a clown

Also funny because Peters is the epitome of professionalism and he’d never do something like that.

It also makes it sound like Peters and Johnson were having a phone call about Johnson keeping Howell if he’s hired—in the middle of the flight to the interview lol.

Commanders tight end Ben Sinnott didn’t necessarily have the rookie year many expected from the 2024 second round pick. Sinnott managed just five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown during the regular season last year and only had one more catch in the playoffs, which came on a fake punt against the Eagles. That’s obviously quite a disappointing return for a second round pick, which has caused many fans to already write him off as a bust. That is premature, so I thought today I could review Sinnott’s rookie season, look at his role within the offense and perhaps reshape how he’s viewed a little bit.

The first thing to note with Sinnott is that while he only had five catches during the regular season, he still had an impact on the team in other ways. As a blocker, he quickly became an important part of the run game. Now, his run blocking as a traditional inline tight end still requires plenty of work, and the Commanders have John Bates in front of him anyway, who is one of the better blocking tight ends in the league. But Sinnott was used as a second tight end and fullback hybrid, which has a functional role within this offense. He performed that role well throughout the season.

No, but he was just released, and we were discussing if we should. Even though Fant looks like he would be an upgrade, I think I would stick with Ertz, Bates, and Sinnott.

I was about to ask you why, and then I searched for Noah Fants blocking grade...damn thats ugly
 
I would not trust Sinnott until he shows he can line up and play regularly. If Ertz goes down with an injury you then have a big fat zero in terms of experience catching the ball from the TE position.

It's great that Bates is a good blocker at the point of attack, but the NFL offense such as it has evolved is based on making plays in the passing game and spreading guys on defense out to run quick hitters and counters from the backfield like Detroit does with Gibbs, etc.

I think to be successful this season it will be more important to get productivity in catches from the TE position and not depend Ertz at 35 to play all 17 games and any postseason, etc.

I would not be afraid to sign Fant or another veteran TE and let Sinnott compete for a job on the roster in Year 2.

We can give him a redshirt for 2024 but not this year.
 
I realize we still aren’t stacked on defense but just as a general statement, Joe Whitt’s gotta show me a little something this year. I know we aren’t there yet on that side of the ball but I need something for him to hang his hat on after two offseasons and lots of roster turnover.

I need to see games where the game plan is really working. I fully understand most won't be like that, but I want us to come out of the gates and really make things different for the opposition and then have the counter ready for when they try and adjust.

Most games won't be like that, but this is the 2nd year of adding pieces to make his defense work.

Yes, exactly. Even if we aren’t there yet, if he’s a future SB winning DC we should absolutely see flashes, and even entire games at times, where everything is clicking.

I got a lot of shit on ES for basically saying same thing last year in like week 3 lol…I had doubts from the start and worried that Quinn’s familiarity with Whitt was the reason he was hired, and the defensive performance during the 1st half of the season did little to alleviate those fears. I wasn’t even sure what it was that I was looking for lol…but much like obscenity, I may not be able to define what I wanted from the defense, but I would know it when I saw it.
