All of that is true, but the two problems are:
1) Injuries cannot be predicted exactly this way in all cases.
2) Attitudes can fluctuate. Tunsil seems like a guy who "may" start phoning it in if given a long-term contract based on some reports. Of course my confidence level in that statement is VERY low, and I don't mean to impugn him at all, but there were a couple of reports that suggested as much. Not all reports said he was some workhorse, early-in, early-out type. So maybe they do want him on shorter contracts until they have some personal comfort level developed. I don't know that I'd disagree with that thinking.
 
I realize there is a big downside risk, but I feel so burnt by the old regime trading for player and immediately re-signing them to a mega contract only for them to fail spectacularly whether that was because they just lost it Donovan McNabb or injury Alex Smith or decided to cash it in Albert Haynesworth. I like this philosophy of seeing how they fit and how they excel "here" before rewarding them just because they did well over "there."
 
I have full faith that a deal with Terry will get done and that there is more than a 50% chance he ends the productive period of his career (which I view as being until age 34 or 35) with us. I still think too many people take it for granted that we'll simply find another receiver. we have a decent track record in santana moss and pierre garcon in finding one (desean was a boon caused by a truly idiotic move I don't think will happen again) but we have had plenty of shit transplants. I have high hopes for JD5 as anyone else, but i'd prefer not to play russian roulette with in-house skill position talents and then cry about JD5 not having enough weapons, for years to come, because we strike out after letting McLaurin go.

examples: Josh Allen, CJ Stroud, Lamar Jackson, Aaron Rodgers before hitting gold with Davante (even though their fanbase has always cried even when having davante, jordy, and Cobb) etc. don't take Terry for granted.
 
I am not worried about Terry McLaurin not being a productive WR. I think he has enough in his bag of tricks that he will be productive until he retires, it is more that he is on the cusp of the age where he is going to go from a #1 Premiere WR to a solid contributor role in another season or two so it gets a little tricky when you are wanting to get paid for past performance versus what the front office thinks you will be able to contribute going forward. If it was up to me, Terry will be retiring on this team when all is said & done, however the reality is eventually the organization is going to have to replace him as "the guy" and I wouldn't count on them waiting around beyond another offseason or two, even if Terry gets paid, so I am thinking this contract isn't going to be fought over just the raw dollars you see in the headlines but also the options and terms after the third year of it where teams often ask for a restructuring.
 
Some of this is strategic, too. Not just from a money stand point, but from a physical standpoint. Both Terry and the team know that he is getting a little bit older. A hold out is a great reason not to be taking part in all of the extra offseason work.

Count me concerned if he isn't signed by week 2 of camp and participating. Otherwise, it's all performative.

Do you expect Ron to get this right and Peters not to?
 
Couldn't sleep well in the heat last night so started watching some games from last season and it hit me again how good Terry actually is. Whilst I would be reluctant to pay over the odds I think I'd be more reluctant to trade away JDs no1 target.

The key here is also, do you expect Terry to be truly "unfair" about it, or his agent's? It is a two-way street and Peters has a team to manage at the end of the day.

Personally, I expect Terry and Adam to meet where they need to meet. Nothing in either's history suggests otherwise. We'll see how it plays out.

that is fair. I think I was more bothered by people that were seemingly angry/upset at Terry for stubbornly wanting an exorbitant contract when all of these fake numbers are just being pulled out of clickbaiters' asses.

if it were true, I would agree with you but there is no reality where this would be the case. looking into the article:

"Sports Illustrated’s Mike Kadlick put 5 teams on a list of possible trade destinations for McLaurin, the he most compelling of those being the Las Vegas Raiders. That’s where McLaurin could get the pricey contract extension he covets and the Commanders should be able to get a 2026 first round pick and 2027 second round pick back in return in a straight up trade."

I looked at the SI article he references. Mike Kadlick didn't even guess at the type of compensation - he just said the raiders would be a fit. so, this clown MSN writer just threw shit at the wall because the raiders were interested in DK Metcalf when he was available for trade. the insane compensation he thinks the commanders would get is even further from reality when the fact is that the seahawks only got a second and a seventh (while giving up a 6th) for Metcalf. MSN writer just used AI to generate a bullshit article.

Id bet $$$ this is the real sticking point. I suspect most fans are going to hear the $$$ / yr and gulp, but when you look under the hood, it's really a two year deal with an inexpensive out for the team in year 3.

I disagree. If we really think we are ready to compete now then even a nice haul isn't worth it. The receiving corp would be hurting without Terry. He's not easily replaced. Besides, it really would be a bad message to send to the players. Terry is the guy you want to reward. He's the role model for the culture that they are trying to build.
 
That article clearly is speculation - it's openly presented as just some possible trade partners, not inside scoop. I don't think that make's the author a 'clown'. Maybe he is overstating the compensation teams would give for McLaurin, then again, who really knows? But there's no reason to beat on a sports writer because he's speculating and it makes fans nervous - that's what those guys get paid to do.
 
I think this will get sorted relatively soon. Metcalf is a perfect comparison point, as he and Terry have played the same amount of years, same amount of games, and have nearly identical statistics. Metcalf though, is more than two years younger than Terry.

DK just signed for 4 years at a $33M per year. My guess is that Terry would slot in at around 3 years, $32M, with a club option on a fourth year. If Terry, and his camp, are asking for decidedly more than that, they are overplaying their hand…the numbers wouldn’t make sense, and the FO can’t redefine their payment structure for one player, who, while very good, is not a generational talent, or even multi-year all pro.
