The 2025 Free Agency Thread

It’s only churn in terms of the guys who don’t perform well enough to earn new contracts.

We are loading up to make another big playoff run. The time is now.

But it's 2025!

Needed a good nights sleep last night. So I missed the Wise signing. But his signing makes the Kinlaw signing make a lot more sense imo. They are adding beef to the DL. And guys that are position flexible run stoppers. They arent going to be double digit sack guys. But Quinn knows how to generate pressure in other ways. Stopping the run had to be the number one issue to fix on defense. Especially with Philly in out division. And they have attacked that in free agency.

So a lot of these one-year, older player deals are by necessity. We have six players left from Rivera's four drafts--and we have two good starters: Martin and Cosmi. Everyone else are backups and JAGs. Contrast that to the Eagles--they doubled that amount in the last two drafts. Look at these drafts:

I updated this from a previous post (on ES I think). I've got 7 left and 2 PS (at least where they ended the season to my knowledge).

Completely agree with your analysis. Just posting the updated RR draft **** show since I previously went through the trouble.

The really scary thing about that list is the fact that few of those who have left have made it to another roster. Rivera's drafts were by far the worst in the history of this franchise.

Feeling more and more like Hendrickson might be a draft day trade kind of guy. I wouldn’t give them more than our late 2nd rounder though and even that is pushing it. That said, if we move out of 29 and gather an extra pick or so this year, I would be able to stomach it much better.

My all-over-the-place random post of the day:

I’m a little surprised Becton is still unsigned. He’d be an interesting piece to add to the OL.
I also wonder if Peters hasn’t ruled out Hendrickson. Would be a major risk, so I doubt he’s entertaining it, but who knows.

My guess is he’s going to hold onto cap space in part with an eye toward any post-draft cuts, though I expect at the least another corner, a DE and a receiver addition in the near future (pre-draft). The latter two I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a step up in quality from our most recent signings (Z’Darius Smith?).

Curious who everyone would put on a short list of quality vet receivers they’d want to bring in? Any thoughts on a surprise target at a different position? Off the top of my head, my surprise signings would be Keenan Allen or Kupp (probably more than we want to spend though), Becton, and Calais Campbell (though I think Miami wants him back).

As for the age of the FAs, part of me likes it with depth guys. I like to have experienced players as backups generally. But as for the FA approach, its actually low risk. These 1 year deals. Heck even the Kinlaw deal which is the one most often criticized is basically a 2 year deal.

Where you get screwed in FA is giving major guaranteed money to decent but not great players and then being stuck with albatross contracts when they underperform. They haven't risked that at all. It in effect allows you deal with acquistions in a low risk way and ensure cap room going forward.
I agree.

I don't mind the age of the depth guys on 1 year deals.

Larry Tunsil is 31, but he's still in his prime and LT's can play well into their 30's at a high level, so I don't care about that.
Deebo only has one year left and cost a 5th round pick, so I don't care about that.

The real key to the team is for last year's draft class to continue to improve and contribute. There were 9 players in that draft. If 7 stick from that draft as either starters or key contributors, that's huge.
Let's assume they eventually get to 6 picks in this draft, and 4 of them hit as starters/contributors.

That's 11 players of 53 which will have been drafted and playing key roles over 2 drafts. That's 20% of the roster.

Stack another 4-5 each year for a few years, and your average age comes down over time.

You just can't find super young, really good players in FA. They don't exist. You have to draft them.

And let's take a look at who's remaining from the last drafts:
2015: none (though Crowder would be part of this if he's retained eventually, though he did have a stink elsewhere.)
2016: none
2017: none. Jon Allen just left.
2018: Daron Payne. NOTE: Payne is 27.
2019: Terry McLaurin
2020: none
2021: Sam Cosmi, John Bates
2022: Brian Robinson Jr., Percy Butler, Chris Paul (he's still on the roster as far as I know)
2023: Quan Martin, Chris Rodriguez

In theory, guys in the 2017-2020 drafts would be your lock-down, blue chip, in their prime type players on a second contract. We have exactly 2 players from those drafts.
From 2021-2023, we have 7 total players in 4 drafts who are on the team, and only one of them (Cosmit) could be considered a real stud.

That's why we have an old team. There's no way to get younger faster than we are doing it.

I do concede, we could have loaded up on draft picks this year and had another 9 selections, and gotten younger faster, however, Peters is (and I think correctly) spending capital to get players who can help right now rather than wait 2-3 years for them to fully develop because he's taking advantage of the fact JD5 is on a rookie deal for 2 more years.

JD5 might have an AAV of close to 80m/year or more when he signs his next contract. That's going to make roster construction more of a challenge. As Galdi says, when you have the "holy grail" of a stud QB on a rookie deal, you have to maximize that period of time because it will evaporate.

Feeling more and more like Hendrickson might be a draft day trade kind of guy. I wouldn’t give them more than our late 2nd rounder though and even that is pushing it. That said, if we move out of 29 and gather an extra pick or so this year, I would be able to stomach it much better.
I am not sure i would do it. Maybe. He's a stud and I think he'd be extremely helpful. However, we do need some draft picks or else when we have to pay JD5, we'll also have 25 players under contract and no good way to replenish the roster through FA.

I'd probably sacrifice a possible Hendrickson trade, and try and move out of the first round and maybe out of the second to stack picks in the 3rd and 4th and go for depth at edge, RB, etc. etc.

The only thing that gives me pause about Adam Peters' free agent policy is his love of 1-year deals is going to mean constant churn. Hopefully, we do eventually replace those one-year guys with draft picks, but I do want to see year over year progress and that's going to be tough if so much of the team needs to be replaced every year.
We were able to successfully bring back some of those one year guys in Wagner, Ertz, Mariota so may not be as much churn as it seems. Losing Chinn was a bummer but feel good about Harris and I'm sure they will bring in another player to compete for starter. I think with where we started post Rivera, it was a better approach than expensive multi year deals that could've hamstring your path for building the team. We also benefited from a great season that made it easier to convince these one year players to return, so I think the approach has worked well from every angle.

These are 1 yr deals, who cares about the age. Also, our trades all have about 2 years left on their deals which aligns with when we'll need to pay JD5. I think the FO is playing the only angle they can to feed off of last season and keep us competitive.

It's going to take several years of drafting before we get out of this due to all the bad draft picks by the Ron administration.

The really scary thing about that list is the fact that few of those who have left have made it to another roster. Rivera's drafts were by far the worst in the history of this franchise.
I actually don’t think he did too badly in the later rounds, though I’d guess he had a lot less input there. I don’t want to defend the guy, but in the 3rd and beyond he at least found some decent guys… though with so many picks, the ratio of “finds” isn’t great.

But good lord, he was absolutely atrocious with the 1st rounders. I firmly believe literally anyone could have done better with any draft site’s big board in hand.
In the 2nd, Mathis was a terrible, forced pick, but at least Martin and Cosmi are solid.

Was listening Denton Day who is subbing for Sheehan today. He's done an odd left turn on the Tunsil deal after applauding it initially, maybe its just radio fodder. But his point brings home my take on him based on what the Texans reporters have said.

Day is alarmed that the Texans reporters are ALL telling him, that Tunsil really likes to get paid, and he couples that to be code that means he was a problem child in Houston. And he goes considering he likes to get paid as the premise. The conclusion is he's a problem considering he likes to be paid. And then adds that this team completed the trade and some other teams did not. In other words, we might be the dumb ones. For starters, this isn't Bruce Allen, Cerrato, or Rivera calling the shots -- so why are we assuming Peters is the dunce?

The thing is if you listen to all these Texans beat guys they are all remarkable consistent -- Day is right about that. And the idea that he likes to be paid -- Day is right about that, too. But IMO he is drawing the wrong conclusion considering the Texans reporters provide plenty of context around Tunsil.

A. Yes he likes to get paid. Heck so does Trent Williams. Who is killing Trent for the same thing? The get paid theme carried with Trent to SF, too. Great player but no he doesn't give any hometown discounts.

B. Great player. Not a single reporter disputes that.

C. Nice guy but not a leader who seems to drive the other guys on the O line. Actually Mark Bullock who does good film work disputes that some, he talked on Galdi the other day saying how helpful Tunsil is because he saw on tape how much he helps and directs the LG about stunts, etc.

The worst thing I've heard about Tunsil is from the only cranky among the Texans reporters who said Tunsil just cared about playing great but didn't care if his teammates played great. Another reporter though disputed that by saying he really really wants to be about a winning culture.

YES! I want them to hit on an Edge and OL early in the draft at least. It would be sweet if they could have hit on a RB, CB and WR early as well.

I can see them go for a LB in FA, right now there are a number of good ones still available and the draft is meh on them.

Back up Center is something that doesn't look that good in the draft so I could see them looking at that in FA

Was listening to Mark Bullock do a tape review of Kinlaw today. He likes him a lot as a run stuffer but thinks he's inconsistent as a pass rusher. Which flies against the PFF scores which is the opposite. But his point watching him is he has violent hands but doesn't seem to have a plan with them and good O lineman can handle him for that reason when he pass rushes. But as a run stuffer, he's a mountain to deal with, can handle double teams which is somethiing this D line struggled with last year, etc. He can see him setting the edge against the run or playing 0-1 technique and clogging the middle.

If so they went a long way this week as to stopping the run.
