Peters wasn’t making the decisions in SF, and saw Kinlaw escape the injury years and have his best year as a pro this past season elsewhere. We also have the DL coach that coached him during his original rookie contract so obviously they see something in him.

It’s essentially a 2/31 deal with the out we have in year 3. Look at the money these clowns are getting across the league, is a decent DL with a high athletic ceiling, who is still improving, really not worth close to $15M in this market? Idk, I think we overpaid to a degree but Dyami Brown will make $10-12M this year on a one year deal. Much worse contracts out there as well. The OT who gave up the most sacks in the NFL last year just signed for $20M/per.

Idk. I was shocked as well and have no idea how it’ll turn out. But the market is silly this year (even more than normal) and they handpicked a guy they know and overpaid him a bit to ensure they got a guy.

I just don’t think referring to the fact they didn’t pick up his 5th year option in SF after an injury-plagued rookie contract stint really means anything when AP wasn’t making decisions there and clearly still believes in the talent after seeing him develop a bit. It’s not a gotcha, and this year in FA $15M per for a couple years doesn’t get you very far.

I totally hear you on the contract figures. We can't use the past, everyone is signing silly deals today as the cap keeps going up. So I'm fine with the terms but I just have to question the player, is he really an upgrade? Keim suggested they use on on the end to set the edge on run plays as I believe I mentioned, but that is a gamble and if they pass and not run we don't really have anyone providing pressure from the edge.

This thread has been busy the last few days! Just wanted to say I’ve enjoyed reading all the differing opinions here. It’s great to see that although opinions can differ on a player or on the direction chosen by the FO all of the points are made with respect and with a passion to see this team succeed. Personally I’m thrilled with the Tunsil trade. I think Kinlaw is an interesting one but I trust that they have a clear plan for him given he was the first guy they went after. Now I’m keen to see how Peters approaches the rest of this offseason. I’d like an edge, a wr and a CB before the draft.

Not sure he's a Dan Quinn type of player--not physical and can't tackle, reportedly.

Yeah he can tackle but he isn't the big hitter DQ likes. He wasn't in my top group I liked but they are all long gone. He is a good corner and can play outside.

What's the risk: The contract details always matter, so until those are known, it's hard to fully gauge the risk. It averages $15 million per year, which is a lot for what he's done -- but that perception can change after the true value is assessed. But he does fill a need to get bigger inside and general manager Adam Peters knows him from their four years together in San Francisco. He's betting that Kinlaw is ascending. He was considered inconsistent against the run in New York. That will have to change in Washington to make this signing worthwhile.

Signing bonus and bases are listed, but there isn't much on incentives, no mentions of voids.... The initial details are from agents, and I'm sure they swing the numbers to show how awesome they are at representing. If the deal is closer to 3/36, with 1 mill likely to get incentives and 2 million stretch, this deal starts to look better. Who knows when the final numbers come out, but the team can start making things official today. I get that the 15per seems high after a 1/7 last year, however I'm not ready to believe it's truly 15 per either.

We all knew they needed more impact players, they had only a few last year, so I kind of agree with that comment. Deebo in a contract year will blow up IMO.

He's not a stat hound or highlight reel player who pops on tape. TBH, I don't know much about him. I know what I want though. I want a Dave Butz type (a guy who never gets pushed back and maybe doesn't get the tackle, but stops the play from going anywhere.)

It looks like we are pushing all on him in a major shakeup to our defensive philosophy.

Not liking the add may also be about not liking the new approach to run stopping. It looks to me like we are overpaying for a run stopper stout old school DE. Who is a comparable from Redskins fame to him... maybe Charles Mann. Phil Daniels!

Not that I have any idea, but if I’m trying to make sense of it…
1) Kinlaw setting the edge could also work against mobile qbs to an extent
2) we’re almost certainly still in the market for a rush end
3) he could spell Armstrong instead of serving as a replacement for Fowler
4) we could still line someone outside of Kinlaw for edge pressure
5) Whitt likes to pressure up the middle, so Kinlaw could be used to help collapse the pocket, rather than the quick pressure you typically want from an edge.

I don't love our offseason so far. I don't think we improved and we've hurt our future trading away picks.

CB is a huge need, Lattimore is not going to stay healthy and that will cost us games.

I'd still like to see us go after Dex Lawrence. Our DL is bad. Kinlaw has been bad his entire career, either from injuries or performance. A ton of physical talent. His knock coming out of college was inconsistent and lazy. All potential and he hasn't shown anything to think that's changed.

Tunsil is good, but not much of a needle mover either and cost us picks.

Harris is the one player that I think is a big upgrade and I liked Chinn.

A strange thought just occurred to me. We may be getting 2026 compensatory picks.

Allen received a bigger contract than Kinlaw
Chinn got a bigger deal than Will
Dyami got a decent deal
Neither Tunsil or Deebo should count in terms of compensation because they were acquired by trade.

Allen wasn't a FA, so he isn't part of the formula. This overthecap page tracks things pretty well. It's not 100% accurate on final picks, but they have mirrored the actually results pretty well historically. Also, we have many bodies needed, so I would assume there is more FA spending to come.

I've watched zero of the guy but it's been said multiple times that he isn't much of a run defender. If the grades are accurate he's like a bigger Fowler vs the run with similar results.

I'd have no problem if they had signed an actual run stopping monster but I don't think that is what they are doing.

I thought that he was a lame run defender... playing inside. He's tall so inside is not his game but I thought that's where he played. Hence labeled a DT.

From what I read he is going to be an elephant end on our D. Phil Daniels 6'5 310 type.

As i mentioned the other day, Tomlinson IMO is who Payne's biggest fans especially among the local media actually think Payne is and who IMO is not. Stout against the run (though according to PFF not who he once was on that front) with sneaky good pass rushing skills.

Pure speculation right now as to where Kinlaw is going to play. Chad Forbes on twitter, a FA fan geek, spitballed that maybe that's what Quinn has in mind. Then Keim spitballed based on Forbes comments and cited him.

It's certainly possible considering he did play some DE with the Jets. but will see.

Tomlinson would be great. I've wanted him since the draft.

If we can somehow add Tomlinson and Lawrence, my tune would change super quick. That's a lot of money after the Kinlaw over pay, but it turns a weakness into a strength.

Then go find a CB.

Tomlinson is my number one FA target right now. Perfect fit for our defense and DQ and Whitts of style player

lol, I never thought I'd be saying this but IMO Payne is a poor man's Tomlinson -- the irony is because Payne is the more physical freak. But again, maybe in sort of a contract year for Payne he maximizes his talent like he did the one other contract year.

But heck as much as I like Peters, so far players like this are signing elsewhere. I assume he has something cooking. I'd be especially thrilled with Lawrence and Tomlinson.
