I highlighted this part because I think it is what drives most of the frustration some are experiencing. In my mind Peters deserves the luxury of the benefit of the doubt from both the supposed media ‘experts’ and the fans until he proves otherwise.
 
Rather than say FA, we should talk about the totality of the circumstances setting us up for next year; We gained a potentially have an all pro CB, an All pro at LT, probably a good WR 2. . Better than that we got them on great contracts. If we were paying free agents of their quality it would probably cost us 75 million dollars instead of 55 million dollars. We are still in a position to sign a few more layer 2 free agents at a good price and round off other needs with the draft. Right now we have 3 starting DT's for rotation. I am sure there are someones who can find fault with everything.

I agree, and that’s actually exactly what I said in the rest of that post. Both things can be true, and they are for me. Peters absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt, and yes the free agent haul the last couple days was underwhelming. Of course I’m willing to let the off-season play out and take everything into account. Free agency is just one part of it. And I love both of the trades. But if we’re just looking at free agency, as it stands out of all the players that were often discussed on here as preferred targets, we didn’t get a single one of them.
Hopefully it turns out to be a good thing.

He will be one to watch. At worst he gives us a 3rd tackle that can give Newton and Payne a break. He also has the ability probably to jump out and be on the edge against some good running teams. Him along with Harris gives us a variety of possibilities. This can make it hard for offenses to plan for. Well, time for some Bourbon on the rocks.

It's weird. Just last year he was signed for 7.25 mil/ 1-year. If it was a "prove it" contract, most people don't think he proved it - 40 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles. Not bad, but not stellar.

His contract is north of those types of numbers, I think his contract reads as a good not great player, but clearly above average types of stats. It doesn't match the numbers, so how did AP get convinced to pay this amount?

My guess is that coaches and GM spoke and they really wanted him, and they got him. They don't usually go above market, and here it looks that way; combined with all of the talk about elephant end, and Kinlaw's physical characteristics... that is my guess. Hope it pans out! It happens in the NFL - you look at your division, your biggest foes, and sometimes it causes some adaptation. I feel like we are making some moves to make sure Barkley doesn't get too many long-distance TDs again (we hope)!
 
Yeah, he's probably going to be decent at minimum and they need a run stopper, hopefully he's good at that.

It certainly beats what Minnesota paid Allen. Pretty dumb of them to not trade a 7th for him though. They would have saved some money.

According to PFF, Kinlaw is horrible against the run...like legitimately atrocious. He had a grade of 36.7 in 2022, 31.3 in 2022, and he shot all the way up to a whopping 50.8 in 2024. His specialty is pass rushing.

He certainly is not a run stuffer in the middle-. Too tall, poor leverage. However, I am interested if they are going to have him play edge often. Height should not effect him as much there.

I am excited to see what he can do. I guess the main concern is that they overpaid maybe due to AP knowing him as a 1st rounder in 2020 by SF. After last year, though, I am more excited than anything else.

Exactly; they think they can make him extremely effective with a different scheme.

Washington ranked 28th in rushing yards per carry and 30th in rushing yards per game. The Commanders needed to bolster the inside after releasing veteran Jonathan Allen. Kinlaw is only 27, so just entering his prime.

What's the risk: The contract details always matter, so until those are known, it's hard to fully gauge the risk. It averages $15 million per year, which is a lot for what he's done -- but that perception can change after the true value is assessed. But he does fill a need to get bigger inside and general manager Adam Peters knows him from their four years together in San Francisco. He's betting that Kinlaw is ascending. He was considered inconsistent against the run in New York. That will have to change in Washington to make this signing worthwhile.

I think you figured out the value of the pick. It is like Harris- they can do things outside the box. Can cause the opposing offensive coordinator real headaches.
 
Well it's still a head scratcher to me. Peters is essentially doubling down on a 1st round DT that the 49ers didn't even pay the 5th year option for and had to take a low ball 7M a year deal last year.

But somehow an experiment makes him worth 2x more over 3 years, which guarantees over 4x his pay last year.

I guess we're just going to have to see.

If he doesn't outplay Fowler, who can probably be had for 6-8 M or less, then this is the second time Kinlaw has busted for Peters.

I too am scratching my head on it, but right now the trust is there. Also, even if they like him a lot and want him for XYZ reasons; why pay over-market? It seems like they really thought he was somehow the perfect fit for what they wanted to do. Like, DQ was talking elephant ends, and AP was like "Oh man, I know the perfect guy for this, we have to get him" - yadda yadda yadda, 15 mill.
I do not think Fowler thinks he is worth less than 8M. I expect he thinks his value is minimum 10M. I am pretty sure you were just added to his "disrespect" list there! Haha.
 
I think; with a trade down we can get a RT solidifying the line for years, A good edge or DL. depending on their plan a decent CB and Rb. I think we are setting up nice but would love to sign at least a few average type CBs.

Well, what did Fowler get paid last year?
He's a year older now, but they did pay Wagner more this year so maybe Fowler just isn't that good. But I doubt Kinlaw has 10 sacks and his run D was barely mediocre. And they are betting on his improvement playing vs Tackles instead of guards and centers?

Fowler is asking for a much greater contract. (I hope we resign him for a decent contract)
